FC 27's new free full-back Evolution adds +4 OVR, Intercept and Slide Tackle in four matches, but on its own only 50 of the 2,421 eligible cards on fut.gg's list can reach its 83 cap. Run Side Step first and 359 can. EA SPORTS FC 27 released Side Stopper on Wednesday 21 October at 17:00 UTC. It's a standard match-based Evolution for left-backs and right-backs rated 81 or lower with pace of 83 or lower. It costs 0 coins and 0 FC Points.
Today is day one of Season 2, which EA dates "22 October 2026 - 3 December 2026" (EA, FC 27 Launch Rewards). Side Stopper runs well into it. We pulled fut.gg's full eligible-player and evolved-player lists for the Evo (2,424 eligible items on 22 October, almost all of them rare base cards, with 2,421 matched to their evolved versions) and ran every card through the upgrade table. We also ran the same pool through last week's free Side Step full-back Evo. The order you do them in decides whether a 74 finishes at 78 or at 83.
TLDR: FC 27 Side Stopper in 30 seconds. Free Evo for any LB or RB rated 81 or lower with PAC 83 or lower (not CB or CDM, max 7 PlayStyles). 3 levels: play 1, play 1, then win 2 (Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or higher, Rush, Rivals, Champions or Live Events). You get +4 OVR (cap 83), +6 Interceptions, Standing Tackle, Sliding Tackle, Defensive Awareness and Strength, +7 Acceleration and Sprint Speed (cap 83), plus Intercept and Slide Tackle, but each PlayStyle only lands while the card has fewer than 3. Start by Saturday 31 October, 18:00 UTC. The trick: do Side Step first (start it by Saturday 24 October, 17:00 UTC). Side Step takes an LB or RB rated 80 or lower up to 81, and Side Stopper then takes it to 83, provided Side Step hasn't pushed its PAC past 83. Reverse the order and the card tops out at 81. What is the FC 27 Side Stopper Evolution?
Side Stopper is a free, three-level defensive Evolution for full-backs. Its in-game description, reproduced on fut.gg, reads: "Dominate the flanks defensively and turn your RB or LB into an attacker's nightmare with these physical and skill boosts." (fut.gg, Side Stopper)
It lands in a game where full-backs are already EA's most-discussed defensive problem. In its post-launch gameplay update, EA wrote: "One of the largest quantities of feedback we've received has been around fullbacks dropping too early and breaking the defensive line." EA also said it would "continue our investigation before making any adjustments". It stressed that an item on its watch list "doesn't mean that changes are coming" (EA, Gameplay Developer Launch Update, 30 September). No Evo fixes positioning AI. What Side Stopper does improve is what happens once your full-back is in the duel: tackling, interceptions, strength and recovery pace.
EA does not publish an article for weekly Evolutions. The requirements, upgrades and deadlines below come from fut.gg's copy of the in-game Evolution data, pulled on 22 October.

Two of these rules catch people out.
The pace ceiling is the one Reddit hates. PAC 83 means most of the quick full-backs in Ultimate Team can't enter. In the r/EASportsFC Side Stopper thread, one player said they keep running into pace limits on every Evo, and that their genuinely fast but useless cards may sit unused until January. Another argued the Evo would have been far better if it allowed centre-backs, which it explicitly doesn't.
Position checks follow the card's positions, not just its main one. fut.gg lists 378 eligible cards whose main position is LM, RM, CM, LW, RW, ST or CAM. They qualify because LB or RB is one of their alternative positions. The best of them is Amad (79 RM), who finishes at 83 OVR with 85 PAC but only 60 DEF. What does Side Stopper upgrade at each level?
Each number is "+amount (cap)". A stat already above its cap keeps its value. It just gains nothing.

Every challenge accepts Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or higher, Rush, Rivals, Champions or Live Events, with the Evo player in your team. That makes it 4 matches and 2 wins in total. The fastest route is usually Squad Battles on Semi-Pro.
Across the whole pool, the average evolved card gains 5.9 DEF and 5.5 PHY on its face stats. 1,505 cards get the full +7 PAC. The pace cap bites at the top. 370 cards gain 3 PAC or less, because their Acceleration and Sprint Speed already sit near 83.
Why should you run Side Step before Side Stopper?
Side Step is last week's free full-back Evo (our Week 4 Evolutions roundup). According to fut.gg's copy of its data, it takes LB or RB, max 80 OVR, max 85 PAC. It adds +7 OVR capped at 81, +5 Acceleration and Sprint Speed (cap 83), Tiki Taka and a 3-star weak foot. It needs 6 matches, no wins, and you must start it by Saturday 24 October, 17:00 UTC (fut.gg, Side Step).
The order changes the result:
- Side Step, then Side Stopper: a 74 goes to 81, then 81 goes to 83. A full-back rated 72 to 80 finishes at 83, as long as it passes both Evos' entry rules and still has 83 PAC or lower after Side Step.
- Side Stopper, then Side Step: this only works while the card is still 80 or lower after Side Stopper, so for cards starting at 76 or lower. A 74 goes to 78, then Side Step's 81 cap stops it at 81. A 78 goes to 82 and can no longer enter Side Step. Any card that ends Side Stopper above 80 can never take Side Step.
- Side Stopper alone: only cards starting at 79, 80 or 81 reach 83. That's 50 cards in the whole pool.
389 cards rated 72 to 80 appear on fut.gg's eligible lists for both Evos (Side Step also excludes CM). fut.gg's own two-Evo calculator drops 30 of them, including Phillipp Mwene, Sergi Cardona and Amad, because Side Step lifts their PAC above 83. That leaves 359 cards that can finish at 83 in the right order, more than seven times as many as Side Stopper alone.

Three checks before you start the chain:
- Deadlines. Side Step must be started by 24 October, 17:00 UTC. Finish it and submit the card to Side Stopper by 31 October, 18:00 UTC (Side Step's finish deadline and Side Stopper's start deadline are the same moment). Side Stopper then runs until 7 November.
- Pace. Side Stopper's PAC 83 limit is checked when you submit. Side Step caps its Acceleration and Sprint Speed boosts at 83, so it can only push a card past 83 PAC if one of those two stats was already above 83. Check the PAC on the evolved card before you submit it.
- Slots. You need a free standard slot for each Evo. Running two Evos one after the other costs no extra slots. See how many Evos you can run at once.
EA's Help page adds one more catch: "When you submit a Player Item to a standard Evolution slot, it becomes untradeable while the Evolution is applied." It also warns that "Some Evolutions may remove the Chemistry bonuses from Special Items" (EA Help, Ultimate Team Evolutions). Don't feed a card you plan to sell. If you change your mind, see whether you can make an evolved player tradeable again.
Which PlayStyles will your full-back actually get?
Both PlayStyles carry a "(^3)" cap. Each one is added only if the card holds fewer than 3 PlayStyles at that level, and is skipped if the card already owns it. The table assumes the card doesn't already own Intercept, Slide Tackle or Tiki Taka; if it does, that PlayStyle is simply skipped. In fut.gg's evolved data, 2,002 cards gain both, 239 gain one and 180 gain none.

This is the real cost of the chain. For a card with one or two PlayStyles, Side Step's Tiki Taka uses up a slot that Slide Tackle or Intercept would otherwise fill. Tiki Taka is one of the ten PlayStyles EA rebalanced for FC 27. EA "removed the animation playback speed boost and the effect that slightly reduced trap error on the pass receiver" (EA, Gameplay Deep Dive). Intercept was rebalanced too, but in the other direction. EA increased interception reach for non-PlayStyle players with high Interceptions, which "results in the reduction in the performance gap between PlayStyles and Attributes." The rule of thumb:
- 0 PlayStyles: chain it. You get all three PlayStyles and, from 72 OVR up, the 83.
- 1 or 2 PlayStyles, rated 79 or lower: chain it if OVR matters most (Squad Battles, chemistry fillers). Skip Side Step if you'd rather keep a defensive PlayStyle than Tiki Taka.
- 3 or more PlayStyles: you get stats only. That's 77 of the 224 gold cards (75 OVR or higher) in the pool, a third of them.

The top of the pool converges. The eight 83s above land within 5 points of each other on PAC + DEF + PHY (243 to 248). So the card you already own and like on the ball matters more than chasing the "best" one.
Fastest finished cards
The +7 pace cap is 83, but a card that already has Acceleration or Sprint Speed above 83 keeps it. That's why Phillipp Mwene (TOTW, LB), Sergi Cardona, Lou Bogaert, Tino Livramento and Malo Gusto finish at 84 PAC. That's still well short of the 90-plus full-backs at the top of the game. One player in the same r/EASportsFC thread pointed out that a pace-and-defending chemistry style such as Shadow is how most people will close the gap.
Best chain candidates (72 to 78, zero PlayStyles)
These are the cards that gain the most from running Side Step first. fut.gg's two-Evo calculator shows each of them finishing at 83 OVR with 83 PAC and Tiki Taka, Intercept and Slide Tackle:

- El Hadji Malick Diouf (LB, 78): 79 / 74 / 75

fut.gg's list has 69 natural full-backs rated 74 to 78 with zero PlayStyles. There's a good chance you already own one. Be careful with already-quick cards: Hugo Rincón and Samuel Dahl (both 75, 83 PAC) look ideal, but Side Step's Acceleration boost lifts them to 84 PAC, which locks them out of Side Stopper.
Who should you NOT use?
- An 81 you'd rather keep flexible. It gains only +2 OVR and can never use Side Step. That's fine if it's already one of the strong 83 finishers above (Kayode, Poljak, Livramento). It's poor value on an average 81.
- Gold cards with 3+ PlayStyles that you'd rather chain. Side Step's Tiki Taka won't land either, so the chain is pure stats.
- Wingers listed through an alternative position. Amad, Celin Bizet and Ritsu Doan all reach 83 OVR, but the upgrades are defensive and their DEF stays at 60 or below.

Side Stopper's two "play 1" levels clear in two Squad Battles matches. The only real work is the 2 wins at level 3. Running the full chain means 6 Side Step matches plus 4 Side Stopper matches, so 10 games in total. Only the start of Side Step is urgent. You then have until 31 October to finish it and move the card into Side Stopper, and until 7 November to finish Side Stopper. The Season 2 reset also moves Rivals players down a few divisions (where you drop in the Season 2 reset), so your first Rivals games this week may be softer than usual. That could make them a reasonable place to collect the two wins.
Is Side Stopper worth it?
Yes, if you do it on the right card in the right order. It's free and takes 4 matches. For any LB or RB rated 72 to 80, Side Step plus Side Stopper is the cheapest route to an 83-rated full-back in Season 2 that you'll find this week. Used alone on a mid-70s card, it's a modest +4 with two PlayStyles you may already own. The common complaint in the r/EASportsFC thread is fair: an 83 to 84 PAC full-back won't stop the fastest wingers in the current meta on its own. But it will out-tackle and out-muscle the base gold you're likely starting today.

What hasn't EA said about Side Stopper?
EA has published no web article for Side Stopper or Side Step. The deadlines, caps and level table come from fut.gg's copy of the in-game data, so double-check them in your Evolutions menu. Two points are our inference, not EA's: (1) that the chain is accepted in this order (both Evos list no prior-Evo restriction, fut.gg's own two-Evo calculator models it, and earlier FC 27 Evo chains such as Middle Management's free 85 chain worked the same way); and (2) that alternative-position wingers pass the position check in-game. EA has also made no change to full-back positioning since its 30 September update.
