Quick answer (TLDR): About 80 hours, going by the only number Rockstar has given. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times (August 27, 2026) that his own playthrough, finished in February 2026, took about 80 hours. That run covered the main story plus some optional objectives, not 100% completion. For comparison, HowLongToBeat puts GTA 5 with extras at ~51.5 hours and Red Dead Redemption 2 with extras at ~84.5 hours. So on this one developer run, GTA 6 looks much longer than GTA 5 and close to RDR2. Rockstar has not published an official runtime, mission count or 100% estimate. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
How long is GTA 6, really? There's one number from Rockstar, and a lot of articles have stretched it. Some headlines call 80 hours "the main story alone." Others make up a 100% figure. With 29 days to launch and preload opening November 12, here's what Nelson actually said, how it compares with every recent Rockstar game, what's still a guess, and a simple way to work out when you'll see the credits.
How long is GTA 6, according to Rockstar?
Roughly 80 hours for one developer's run through the story and some side content. That is the only first-party figure. It came out on August 27, 2026, the day of the Extended Look, in a New York Times interview with Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North.
Three details matter, and most recaps skip them:
- It's one person's playthrough, not an official runtime. Nelson described his own run. Rockstar did not say "GTA 6 is 80 hours long."
- It was finished in February 2026. That's nine months before launch, on a pre-release build. Missions can still get trimmed or extended before the final version.
- It isn't just the main story. As IGN reported, the 80 hours included the main story plus some:
"optional goals with narrative ramifications" — Rob Nelson, co-studio head, Rockstar North, to The New York Times (via IGN, Aug 27, 2026)
In other words, Nelson did side content that changes the story. He didn't just rush the critical path. IGN also notes it's unclear whether the 80 hours includes free-roaming around Leonida, and that Nelson hopes players take their time instead of rushing.
Our read: a pure story rush will probably come in under 80 hours, and a completionist run will be well over it. Nobody outside Rockstar has a real number for either yet.
How does GTA 6's length compare to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2?
Here are the real numbers. These are the headline averages on each game's HowLongToBeat page (player-submitted, shown to the nearest half hour), checked on October 21, 2026. HLTB's detailed single-player tables use a slightly different average, so you'll see small differences there.
| Game | Main story | Main + extras | 100% (completionist) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA III (2001) | 14 h | 20 h | 36.5 h |
| GTA IV (2008) | 27 h | 40.5 h | 72 h |
| GTA V (2013) | 32 h | 51.5 h | 89.5 h |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | 51 h | 84.5 h | 196 h |
| GTA 6 (2026) | not published | ~80 h (Nelson's run) | not published |
Sources: HowLongToBeat pages for GTA III, GTA IV, GTA V, and HowLongToBeat's Red Dead Redemption 2 page. GTA 6 figure: Rob Nelson via The New York Times.
Nelson's run included optional content, so the fair comparison is the "Main + extras" column:
- vs GTA 5: 80 hours vs 51.5 hours, so about 55% longer. GTA 5's main story alone is 32 hours, but that isn't a like-for-like comparison, because Nelson's run included optional content.
- vs GTA IV: 80 vs 40.5 hours, about double.
- vs Red Dead Redemption 2: 80 vs 84.5 hours, slightly shorter, roughly the same size. RDR2's story path alone is 51 hours.
You'll see "GTA 6 is as long as GTA 4 and GTA 5 combined" online. It isn't quite right: both main stories add up to 59 hours, and Nelson's run is about 35% longer than that, with extras included. A better way to put it: GTA 6 looks like an RDR2-sized game set in a GTA world. That fits what Rockstar has been telling press about how much of RDR2's design carried over (more on that below).
Is 80 hours the main story only?
No, and this is the most common mistake online. Several sites and social posts say GTA 6's main story alone is 80 hours. That isn't what Nelson said. His run covered the main story plus optional goals with narrative ramifications.
Here's how to sort it:
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A Rockstar dev's run took ~80 hours | ✅ Confirmed (on record) | Rob Nelson, NYT, Aug 27, 2026 |
| That run included some optional story-relevant content | ✅ Confirmed | Same interview, via IGN |
| GTA 6 is longer than GTA 5 | 🟡 Likely, not an official claim | One dev run vs GTA 5's HLTB averages |
| GTA 6 is Rockstar's longest game ever | ❓ Not established | RDR2 with extras (84.5 h) is above Nelson's 80 h |
| "80 hours for the main story alone" | ❌ Misreported | Not what Nelson said |
| "100% takes ~120 hours" | ❌ Estimate | GTABase projection, not Rockstar |
| Exact mission count | ❓ Unknown | Never announced; the 2022 leak is not a source |
If a site gives you a precise mission count or a 100% number before November 19, it's guessing.
Why will GTA 6 take longer than GTA 5?
Rockstar hasn't explained the runtime directly. What it has confirmed points one way: more map, more side content, and a story that changes based on your choices.
1. The map is about twice as big. Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's map, and denser:
"This new world is different. We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out." — Aaron Garbut, Rockstar North, to Game Informer (via IGN, Sep 29, 2026)
Leonida has six regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. See our GTA 6 map size vs GTA 5 breakdown and the hundreds of interiors you can enter.
2. The story won't take you everywhere. Rockstar's SVP of narrative, Rupert Humphries, told Game Informer the main storyline won't span the entire map (as reported by tech4gamers). Some areas are left for side activities, random encounters and free-roam discovery. IGN's summary adds that the story is still built to move you around Leonida and show the contrast between its rich and poor areas. If you want to see the whole map, that time comes on top of the story.
3. There's a lot of side content. Activities Rockstar confirmed via Game Informer include base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, airboating and jet skiing. Add 170+ animal species you can study for a collection (full GTA 6 animals list) and planned robberies with multiple approaches (GTA 6 robberies explained).
4. Your choices change the story. According to IGN's summary of the Game Informer feature, choices big and small affect Jason and Lucia's relationship and the wider story, which encourages replays to see different threads. The Criminal Profile system also tracks how you play. Any game with branching paths will get replayed, so GTA 6's total playtime is likely to keep growing after the first run.
Will fast travel make GTA 6 shorter?
A bit, but not the way it did in GTA 5. Instead of GTA 5's taxis, GTA 6 uses ride-share cars, and you can share rides with other passengers and have conversations with them (per IGN's Game Informer recap). If you'd rather not chat, you can scroll Snapmatic, the game's Instagram parody, but you can't post on it yourself, because Jason and Lucia are on the run.
So fast travel exists, but it's built to be part of the world. Players who use it a lot will save time getting around a map twice GTA 5's size. Players who drive everywhere, which is most of us in a new GTA, will add hours.
How long will it take you to finish GTA 6?
Use Nelson's ~80 hours as your "story plus a fair amount of side content" baseline. Then adjust:
| Play style | Rough estimate* | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Story rush (critical path, skip side content) | ~50–70 h | On HLTB, main story is ~60% of main + extras for both GTA 5 and RDR2; 60% of 80 h ≈ 48 h is the floor if Nelson did a lot of side content |
| Normal run (story + side content that interests you) | ~80 h | Nelson's own run |
| Explorer (story + most activities + wildlife) | 100 h+ | More side content than Nelson's "some", and the story doesn't cover the whole map |
| Completionist (100%) | unknown, roughly 140–185 h | HLTB 100% is 1.7x main + extras for GTA 5 (89.5 vs 51.5 h) and 2.3x for RDR2 (196 vs 84.5 h); applied to 80 h |
\Our estimates, extrapolated from Nelson's figure and the HLTB ratios for RDR2 and GTA 5. None of these numbers come from Rockstar.*
Your finish date at ~80 hours, starting November 19:
- 1 hour/day: 80 days, so around February 6, 2027
- 2 hours/day: 40 days, so around December 28, 2026
- 4 hours/day: 20 days, so around December 8, 2026
- Launch-week marathon (10 h/day): 8 days, so around November 26, 2026
Check the exact unlock time in your region so day one doesn't start late. Have the download done via preload from November 12, and check the file size and storage you'll need now.
Does GTA 6 Online or future DLC add to the length?
Not to the 80 hours. Nelson's figure is for the story mode. GTA 6 Online hasn't had a full reveal or release date yet. What we know is in our GTA 6 Online explainer. Story DLC is also unconfirmed. Rockstar never shipped story DLC for GTA 5, which is why we keep the GTA 6 single-player DLC question in the rumor column.
What do players think about an 80-hour GTA?
On r/GTA6, the thread on Nelson's 80-hour figure was almost entirely celebration. The top replies call the game a "buffet," and several players joke about saying goodbye to their social life. The most interesting replies came from Red Dead Redemption 2 veterans. One said they had around 500 hours in RDR2; another said they'd logged over 1,000 hours, mostly slow riding with the HUD off, hunting and camping. Their point: the story runtime is only the start. In a dense Rockstar world, most of the hours come from wandering around.
PC players were less happy. With no PC version announced for launch, one commenter joked about getting to play in "April 2027." Our GTA 6 PC release explainer covers what's actually been reported.
The practical takeaway: don't plan to "beat it on launch weekend." Even at 10 hours a day it takes about 8 days, so most people will be playing GTA 6 from December into January.

FAQ
How many hours is GTA 6? The only Rockstar figure is about 80 hours. That's how long Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson's own playthrough took, covering the main story plus some optional story-relevant goals (The New York Times, August 27, 2026). Rockstar has not published an official runtime.
Is GTA 6's main story 80 hours long? Not exactly. Nelson's 80-hour run included optional goals with narrative ramifications, so the critical path alone is probably shorter. Headlines saying "80 hours of main story alone" are misreporting the interview.
Is GTA 6 longer than Red Dead Redemption 2? Not on current evidence. They look about the same size. RDR2 averages 84.5 hours for main story plus extras on HowLongToBeat, and Nelson's GTA 6 run with some extras was ~80 hours. RDR2's main story alone is 51 hours. GTA 6's main-story-only length hasn't been published.
How much longer is GTA 6 than GTA 5? GTA 5's main story averages 32 hours and main plus extras 51.5 hours on HowLongToBeat. Nelson's ~80-hour GTA 6 run, which included some extras, is about 55% longer than GTA 5 with extras.
How long will it take to 100% GTA 6? Nobody knows yet. Rockstar hasn't given a completionist figure, and any "120 hours" number online is a projection. For reference, RDR2's 100% average on HowLongToBeat is 196 hours.
When can I start playing GTA 6? GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with preload from November 12. No PC date has been announced.
