How to Beat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring: Boss Guide, Stats & Best Strategy

Mohg, Lord of Blood is one of the most consequential bosses in Elden Ring: he is not just a Great Rune fight, he is one of the two demigods you must defeat to open Shadow of the Erdtree. He is also the boss most players fail to prepare for, because his real threat isn't a sword combo — it's a scripted self-heal called the Bloodboon Ritual that can undo half your progress in one cast. This guide breaks down Mohg's exact stats, the single item that shuts down his heal, and a phase-by-phase plan, all verified against the current base game (Version 1.17).

Quick Answer: How to Beat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring

Beat Mohg by bringing the Purifying Crystal Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick to shield yourself through his Phase 2 "Nihil" ritual, staying close to his left side to bait his trident swings, and exploiting his weakness to Bleed and physical damage. Mohg curses you three times over the fight (the Bloodflame Blood Curse), so keep your HP topped up and equip the Lord of Blood's Exultation talisman to turn his own blood loss into your attack buff. He is fought at the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum (Mohgwyn Palace), and defeating him is one of the two requirements to enter Shadow of the Erdtree.

Here are the fast facts before the deep dive:

  • HP: 18,389 (New Game); Defense 122
  • Runes: 420,000
  • Location: Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, Mohgwyn Palace
  • Weak to: Bleed (procs at 290 buildup — the lowest threshold of any status on him) and physical damage
  • Immune to: Madness; heavily resistant to Sleep, Scarlet Rot, Poison and Frostbite (all 653 buildup)
  • The key item: Purifying Crystal Tear (shields you through the Nihil ritual)
  • Reward: Remembrance of the Blood Lord + Mohg's Great Rune

Where to Find Mohg, Lord of Blood

There are two ways into Mohgwyn Palace, and both matter because Mohg blocks progress in two directions at once.

The intended late-game route is the Pureblood Knight's Medal, an item from the White Mask Varré questline: use it and you are teleported straight to Mohgwyn Palace. The faster, more popular route is the teleporter trap in the Consecrated Snowfield (northeast, near the Yelough Anix Ruins) — a portal that flings you to the base of the Palace with no questline required. From either entry point, ride up through the blood marsh — the site of the game's most famous rune-farming spot — to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace, and the fog gate is just beyond.

The closest grace to the fight is the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint. If you have not been here before, note that the blood swamp itself is a rune goldmine on the way up — we cover it in our best rune farming spots guide, because it's the single most efficient farm in the game and the reason many players visit Mohgwyn Palace long before they're ready to fight its owner.

Why Mohg Matters: The Shadow of the Erdtree Gate

Before the strategy, the reason this fight is unskippable for most players. To enter Shadow of the Erdtree, you must defeat both Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then interact with the withered arm in the cocoon beside Mohg's throne. That's the official access requirement — there is no other door into the Realm of Shadow.

So Mohg is not an optional side boss like Malenia; if you want the DLC, he is mandatory. We walk through the full unlock in our how to access Shadow of the Erdtree guide, and the other half of the requirement in our Promised Consort Radahn guide. Beat those two and the DLC opens.

One important distinction: the Mohg at Mohgwyn Palace is Mohg, Lord of Blood — the full boss with the Great Rune and the Remembrance. There is a separate, weaker version, Mohg, the Omen, hidden in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell. They share a moveset but are different fights with different rewards. This guide is about the Palace boss.

Mohg's Stats and Weaknesses

Here is the verified stat block for Mohg, Lord of Blood (New Game), confirmed against the current version 1.17 (Version 1.17 does not change the fight):

  • HP: 18,389
  • Defense: 122
  • Runes dropped: 420,000
  • Damage type: Physical + Fire (the Bloodflame damage-over-time is Fire-based)
  • Weaknesses: Bleed is his single best status — its buildup threshold is 290, the lowest of any ailment on him, so a bleed weapon procs Hemorrhage reliably. He also takes physical damage well.
  • Resistances: He is immune to Madness and heavily resistant to every other status — Sleep (1,406), and Scarlet Rot, Poison and Frostbite all at 653 buildup, more than double the Bleed threshold. So bleed is the one status worth building around; the rest proc too slowly to rely on.

The takeaway: a Bleed weapon is the strongest pick, physical damage is reliable, and Fire negation on your armor and talismans blunts his most dangerous mechanic. Don't bother trying to inflict Madness — he's immune.

Phase 1: Bait the Trident, Stay on His Left

Phase 1 is a spacing fight. Mohg wields a long trident and telegraphs most of his swings, so the core loop is simple: stay close and slightly to his left, dodge into his swings, and punish the recovery with one or two hits before backing out.

Two Phase 1 details change how you play:

  • Mohg's Shackle. If you picked up Mohg's Shackle from the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds (near the Mohg, the Omen mini-boss), you can use it twice in Phase 1 only to bind him in place for free damage. It does nothing in Phase 2, so spend both charges early. This is the single biggest damage shortcut in the fight.
  • The Blood Curse begins. Over the course of the battle Mohg raises his hand and marks you with sigils that count up — the Bloodflame Blood Curse. When the counter completes, the sigils detonate for heavy Fire/blood damage. You cannot fully prevent it, so the plan is to keep your HP buffer high whenever the counter is climbing and be ready to heal the instant it pops. Fire negation on your armor and the Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear or fire-resist talismans meaningfully soften the blast.

Whittle him down and, at 50% HP, he transitions — and this is where the fight is actually won or lost.

Phase 2: How to Stop Mohg's Nihil Heal (the Purifying Crystal Tear)

At 50% HP, Mohg applies the final Blood Curse stack (Ūnus) and ascends into the air to begin the Bloodboon Ritual, chanting "Nihil" three times. Each chant damages you across the arena and heals Mohg — across the full ritual he restores roughly 25% of his total health while draining yours. Let it resolve unopposed and he claws back a large chunk of the bar you just spent minutes removing — this is why unprepared players feel like the fight never ends.

There is a hard counter, and it is the whole reason to prepare before you walk in:

The Purifying Crystal Tear. Mix this crystal tear into your Flask of Wondrous Physick and drink it just before Mohg starts his transition — the instant he hits 50% — so you aren't wasting the ritual's window fumbling for your Physick. It grants a shield that prevents all three bleed counts of the Bloodboon Ritual and greatly mitigates the transition damage, handing you a stretch of free time to keep attacking while he's airborne and vulnerable instead of desperately healing. You get the Purifying Crystal Tear by defeating Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger — an invader you summon at the Second Church of Marika in the Altus Plateau. Getting that tear is the most important pre-fight errand for this boss, full stop.

Beyond the heal, Phase 2 Mohg is faster and layers Bloodflame onto his trident, adding a Fire damage-over-time on hits. The Blood Curse sigils also come out faster. The rest of the plan doesn't change: stay on his left, punish recoveries, keep Fire negation up, and burn him down — now permanently, because you've shut off his only way to recover.

Best Strategy & Loadout to Beat Mohg

Pull it together into a checklist:

  • Bring the Purifying Crystal Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick. This is non-negotiable — it is the difference between a fair fight and an endless one.
  • Equip the Lord of Blood's Exultation talisman. It boosts your attack power when blood loss occurs nearby — and this fight is drenched in it, so it's near-permanent uptime. (It's found in the Leyndell Catacombs, appropriately.)
  • Stack Fire negation. Armor with high Fire resistance plus a fire-resist talisman or the Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear blunts both the Bloodflame damage-over-time and the Blood Curse detonation.
  • Use a Bleed weapon. Bleed is his lowest status threshold; a strong bleed weapon staggers him and stacks with the Exultation talisman for a snowball of damage. Physical damage is your reliable baseline either way.
  • Keep your HP buffer high while the Blood Curse counter climbs, and heal the moment it detonates.
  • Spend both Mohg's Shackle binds in Phase 1 for free damage windows.
  • Spirit Ashes are allowed — a Mimic Tear that mirrors a bleed build is the cleanest help, and extra bodies mean more blood loss to power your Exultation talisman.

As for level: community consensus puts a comfortable first clear around level 100–120 with a +24/+25 (or Somber +9/+10) weapon and 40+ Vigor — but that is a player recommendation, not an official FromSoftware number. What actually decides the fight is bringing the Purifying Crystal Tear, not your level.

In-character, Mohg opens the fight by claiming his prize: "Miquella is mine and mine alone." His whole identity — and the Blood Curse he throws at you — is the ritual to raise Miquella to godhood with himself as consort.

What You Get for Beating Mohg

Mohg drops 420,000 Runes and the Remembrance of the Blood Lord. Take the Remembrance to Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold to trade it for one of:

  • Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear — a great spear that scales with Arcane, deals blood loss, and unleashes his signature ascension-and-slam Ash of War.
  • Bloodboon — an incantation that recreates Mohg's fiery blood explosion.

You also receive Mohg's Great Rune. Note that this Great Rune is a multiplayer-only buff — it grants a blessing of blood to your summoned phantoms and a Phantom Great Rune on a successful invasion. It does nothing in solo play, which makes it the odd one out among the shardbearer runes. For how the others compare, see our Great Runes ranking. And most importantly: with Mohg and Radahn both down, the arm in the cocoon behind his throne opens the door to Shadow of the Erdtree.

FAQ

Do you have to beat Mohg to enter Shadow of the Erdtree? Yes. To access Shadow of the Erdtree you must defeat both Mohg, Lord of Blood and Starscourge Radahn, then interact with the withered arm in the cocoon beside Mohg's throne in Mohgwyn Palace. There is no other way into the DLC.

How do you survive Mohg's Nihil ritual? Drink a Flask of Wondrous Physick mixed with the Purifying Crystal Tear the moment Mohg hits 50% and starts his transition. It shields you from all three bleed counts of the Bloodboon Ritual and greatly mitigates the transition damage, giving you a window to keep attacking him while he's airborne instead of scrambling to heal. You get the Purifying Crystal Tear by defeating Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger at the Second Church of Marika.

Is Mohg, Lord of Blood the same as Mohg, the Omen? No. Mohg, the Omen is a separate, weaker boss in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell. Mohg, Lord of Blood is the full boss at Mohgwyn Palace with 18,389 HP, the Great Rune, and the Remembrance. They share a moveset but are different fights.

What is Mohg weak to in Elden Ring? Bleed is his best weakness — its buildup threshold is 290, the lowest of any status on him — and he takes physical damage well. He is immune to Madness and heavily resistant to Sleep, Scarlet Rot, Poison and Frostbite (all 653 buildup, more than double the Bleed threshold), so bleed is the only status worth building around against the Lord of Blood.

What level should you be to beat Mohg? Community consensus is around level 100–120 with a +24/+25 (or Somber +9/+10) weapon and 40+ Vigor. That is a player recommendation, not an official figure. The Purifying Crystal Tear matters far more than your level — with it the fight is fair, without it it drags on regardless of how strong you are.

Does Elden Ring Version 1.17 change the Mohg fight? No. The 1.17 update (live August 28, 2026) added new starting classes and a balance pass but does not alter Mohg's stats or moveset. This guide reflects the current base game.
