How to Beat Sasaki Ganryu in Onimusha: Way of the Sword — All 3 Fights + Carnage Tips

Quick answer (as of October 24, 2026): You fight Sasaki Ganryu three times in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Fight 1 (The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu, the same duel that's in the free demo) is a fair intro: parry his leaping slash as it lands, wait out the delayed stabs, and dodge-reverse the grab. Fight 2 (To Live is to Suffer, Yasaka Pagoda) puts Ganryu together with his Oni Gioh, and it is scripted for you to lose. Fight 3 (In the Light of an Icy Moon, Arashiyama) is the real wall. When his blade glows blue he's in a counter stance: stop attacking, then use Oni Strength to break it. Keep Gioh away from the Malice flowers and parry the pink-flash dash, because it's undodgeable. On Carnage, Ganryu gets his own Issen counter and can kill you in two hits.

The first Ganryu duel is a polite introduction. The third is the fight r/Onimusha keeps calling the hardest in the game, and some players rank it above the final boss. PowerPyx's Carnage boss guide rates Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) 7/10 on Carnage, the second-toughest fight behind Minamoto no Yoshitsune (8.5). This guide covers every encounter in story order: what changes between them, how to answer each move, and what the free demo still gets you seven weeks after launch.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword released on September 4, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Move names and counters below come from IGN's and Maxroll's boss guides and the Fextralife wiki, all fetched October 24, 2026. Community tips are credited as player reports.

How many times do you fight Sasaki Ganryu?

Three times in the story, and twice more in the Boss Rematch menu.

#ChapterLocationWho you fightOutcome
1The Stage is Set at KiyomizuKiyomizu-dera TempleSasaki Ganryu (solo)Win required, first major boss
2To Live is to SufferYasaka Pagoda (after Burai)Ganryu + GiohScripted loss
3In the Light of an Icy MoonArashiyamaGanryu + Gioh (Blazing State moves)Win required, then Dokyo

Maxroll's summary: "The first encounter is easy, it serves as an introduction to the game's boss battles. However, the second and third encounters are more challenging." The Boss Rematch roster at the Practice Ground lists two Ganryu entries, Sasaki Ganryu and Sasaki Ganryu (Altered), among its 18 fights. Beat either in the story and it shows up there.

How do you beat Sasaki Ganryu at Kiyomizu (fight 1)?

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, where the first Sasaki Ganryu duel and the free demo take place

IGN calls this "the first major boss encounter", and it teaches the loop every later boss uses. Drain the red Stamina bar under his name with parries and deflects, then cash the opening in with Break Issen. Before you go in, rest at the Spirit Mirror. That sets a reload point and refills your restoration items.

PowerPyx's read on his style: he "spends most of the fight weaving around the arena, combining quick, piercing strikes with slower, wave-like delayed ones — all clearly telegraphed, even the delayed attacks." The usual mistake is panic-pressing parry on the delayed swings, so wait for the blade to actually commit.

Phase 1 moves and counters (per IGN):

MoveTellCounter
Leaping SlashJumps and cuts down onto youParry as it lands. That drains Stamina and stuns him for a couple of free hits
Leaping KickJumps and drops a footUnarmed, so dodge late. If he follows with a slash, dodge and then parry
Dash and AttackLow crouching rush, slash, then slash or stabParry the back-slash, or the stab if you miss it. He can end up behind you
Stab / Triple StabCrouches with the blade tip forwardParry. There is a short pause before the third stab, which gives you a wider final window

Break Issen choice: when his Stamina breaks, you pick a target point. Red = high damage, purple = low damage plus souls. Take red unless you need yellow souls (health) or blue souls (Oni Power).

Phase 2 starts at half health, or after your first Break Issen. His skin turns grey and he adds a Leaping Kick into Grab. Press dodge just before the grab connects to reverse it, and he is stunned long enough for a few hits. Once his health is low and his Stamina is empty again, a final Break Issen ends the fight.

Is the Ganryu fight in To Live is to Suffer meant to be lost?

Yes. This is the encounter that sends people to Google in a panic, so here it is plainly. After Burai goes down, Ganryu shows up at Yasaka Pagoda with Gioh, an Oni whose sword-tipped arms grow out of his back. IGN's guide is blunt: once you bring Ganryu's health to zero, "The HUD disappears... and he keeps fighting. You can continue the battle, but this is a fight Musashi is meant to lose." The Fextralife wiki records the chapter as Musashi's first defeat and warns players not to read it "as proof that your entire build is wrong."

The fight is still the best practice you'll get for fight 3, because almost the whole moveset carries over. Use it to learn these three rules:

  • Blue-glowing blade = Counter Stance. If you attack into it, he answers with a strong counter that floors Musashi, and two-handed attacks won't break it. Use Oni Strength when prompted, then press it again for a Battering follow-up.
  • Gioh's mouth glows blue = grab. The grab comes from her head, not his body, which is why players don't see it coming. Dodge as the flash appears to get a Grab Reversal.
  • Gioh's arms are the weak point. Parrying his normal swings can spin him and expose his back, so slash the arms there. Parrying her three-sword Tentacle Swipe also buries a blade in the ground with the arm still attached. Hit it to sever the arm.

Other moves from this fight: a lightning Dash Stab (parry or deflect as he drops low), Slice and Stab (parry the first hit), a kneeling Head Swipe from Gioh (unarmed, so dodge it), and a gap-closing Leaping Strike (parry or deflect).

How do you beat Ganryu and Gioh in Arashiyama (fight 3)?

The third duel is near the end of In the Light of an Icy Moon, just before Dokyo. Save at the last Spirit Mirror and have Oni Awakening charged before you walk in. According to Maxroll, the screenshots in its guide come from both Gioh fights "however the moves shown do not change between the two encounters. It's only the blazing state moves... which are unique to the third encounter." So everything from fight 2 still applies, plus a soul race and a Phase 2 that punishes hard.

Phase 1: stop Gioh eating the flowers

Gioh reaching for the Malice flowers during the Sasaki Ganryu fight in Arashiyama

The arena is full of Malice flowers, and the game warns you directly that letting Gioh eat them puts you at a disadvantage. Each flower she absorbs pushes her toward the Blazing State. Ways to stop her:

  • Stay close and keep pressure on. Maxroll's main advice is to keep attacking so she can't break off to feed.
  • Shoot her. If you're quick, Oni Bow shots to Gioh's head or upper neck interrupt her.
  • Save a burst for the disengage. Some Gioh attacks pull the boss away from you. An Oni Armament or a ready Reflex Combo lets you close the gap before she feeds.

If she does reach the Blazing State, her extra arms become armored and you can't sever them. They aren't safe for her, though. Parry an arm swing to embed its blade in the ground, then punish the arm for bonus damage. Blazing Gioh also gets a bound-arms swipe that slams down. Maxroll calls it easy to dodge and says it "makes the fight easier" if anything. Gioh enters this state at the start of Phase 2 no matter what, so the flower race mostly decides how early it happens.

Phase 2: the undodgeable dash

Blazing State Ganryu winding up his undodgeable pink-flash dash in phase 2

As his health drops, or as more souls are collected, Ganryu enters the Blazing State too, and he gets two new moves:

  • Red wave: a projectile slash. Answer it with a deflect or a Ranged Issen.
  • Undodgeable dash: his blade flashes pink, then he lunges across the arena. You cannot dodge it, so treat the pink flash as your cue to parry or deflect. A hit costs a big chunk of health and some of your souls.

Maxroll's verdict: "The hardest part about phase 2 is dealing with the undodgable attack... Once you get this down, it's rinse and repeat like phase 1." There's good news too. Compared with other late-game bosses, Ganryu has low health, so steady chip damage gets there.

What changes when you fight Ganryu on Carnage?

Carnage is the locked-in post-game difficulty and New Game+, and it changes this fight more than any other. IGN's Post-Game Guide gives Ganryu as its example of a boss that gains new moves: "Ganryu now has his own Issen that he'll occasionally use to counter your attacks." PowerPyx warns that the Altered version "can kill you in two hits if you let your guard down."

Players in r/Onimusha's current Carnage Ganryu thread repeat the same few fixes:

  • Parry rather than deflect on the delayed strikes. Several players say the parry window feels more forgiving than the deflect window against moves they can't read.
  • Actually use your items. One player called it "the first boss fight in Carnage that forces me to use items." Stamina and Oni-gauge consumables both help.
  • Run the Awakening Hozuki Pouch so you stay in Oni Awakening for longer. In that form Issen gets much easier and incoming damage stops mattering. One player's plan was to cash Awakening into Issen two or three times per fight.
  • Fight from range when he's aggressive. Some players keep their distance and use the bow to stop his Stamina regenerating instead of trading blows up close.
  • Gear check: commenters suggest sword/gauntlet upgrades at level 3 minimum, ideally 4. Your parry and deflect timing still matters more than the numbers.

Is he harder than the final boss? For a lot of players, yes. One commenter took "2 hours and a half" on the third Ganryu fight against "less than a hour" for Yoshitsune, both on Carnage, and another simply called Yoshitsune more "readable." That's community opinion. On PowerPyx's ratings, Yoshitsune is still the harder fight.

Musashi triggering a glowing Issen counter in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Reward worth chasing: per Maxroll's cosmetics guide, finishing the whole game on Carnage unlocks the Bishamon Sword, which makes Issen much easier to land on any difficulty. Clear every Carnage Boss Rematch, both Ganryu entries included, for Warlord's Armor 2.

Which skills, charms and pouch help most against Ganryu?

All three fights reward the same setup:

  • Oni Strength is mandatory for fights 2 and 3, because it's the only clean answer to the Counter Stance.
  • Reflex Combo (the offensive dodge) turns Gioh's unarmed swipes into damage and builds your gauge.
  • Blazing State. Parries fill Musashi's Blazing gauge, and when it's full you deal more damage and get Blue Soul drops. Several Carnage players say a parry-heavy rhythm keeps you in Blazing State and throws Ganryu off his pattern.
  • Charms: players favour Oni-gauge, Awakening-gauge and regular-attack-power charms here. For your first run, healing and defence charms are the safer pick.
  • Hozuki Pouch: stick with the Default pouch for raw healing on Story or Action. On Carnage, use the Awakening pouch.

Is the Sasaki Ganryu demo still worth playing?

Yes. As of October 24, 2026 the free Onimusha: Way of the Sword DEMO is still live on Steam (AppID 3974650, separate from the full game's 2638890). It is no longer just the Ganryu duel, though. The original June demo ended on fight 1 in the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage, and Capcom described it like this: "Utilize parries, deflects, Issen, soul absorption, and an Oni Armament to fight your way through the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage, and face Musashi's formidable rival, Sasaki Ganryu." The August 25, 2026 content update expanded the playable areas past that duel and added "a massive new boss, Daidara." So the current demo is Kiyomizu, then Ganryu, then more ground and Daidara.

It still pays to finish it, because a demo save unlocks the Kubi Akari charm in the full game, which Capcom says boosts Musashi's stats. Capcom's official claim steps: in Settings, go to Privacy > Demo Bonus > Collect Reward. Then go to a Spirit Mirror and pick it up under Additional Content > Demo Bonus (the menu wording varies slightly by platform) before you equip it. Capcom notes that Spirit Mirrors and the Charms section of the Equipment screen unlock as the story goes on, so you may not get it straight away. One tip from the demo's launch period still holds for all three fights: don't try to use every defensive tool at once. Pick parry, deflect or dodge as your main answer and add the others as the reads come to you.

FAQ

How many times do you fight Sasaki Ganryu in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? Three times in the story: at Kiyomizu-dera (The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu), at Yasaka Pagoda (To Live is to Suffer) and in Arashiyama (In the Light of an Icy Moon). The Boss Rematch menu adds two replayable entries, Sasaki Ganryu and Sasaki Ganryu (Altered).

Are you supposed to lose to Ganryu and Gioh at Yasaka Pagoda? Yes. Once his health hits zero, the HUD disappears and he keeps fighting. IGN calls it "a fight Musashi is meant to lose," and the story treats it as Musashi's first defeat. Losing there doesn't mean your build is wrong.

How do you break Ganryu's blue counter stance? Stop attacking and use Oni Strength when the prompt appears, then press it again for a Battering follow-up. Normal and two-handed attacks into the stance get countered.

How do you dodge Ganryu's pink flash attack? You can't. It's an undodgeable dash from Blazing State Ganryu in the Arashiyama fight. Treat the pink flash as your cue and parry or deflect as he lunges.

Is Sasaki Ganryu harder than Yoshitsune? PowerPyx ranks Ganryu (Altered) second-hardest at 7/10 on Carnage, behind Yoshitsune at 8.5. Many r/Onimusha players disagree and say the Arashiyama Ganryu took them far longer, mostly because Gioh's attacks are hard to read.

How do I get the Kubi Akari charm from the demo? Keep your demo save, then in the full game go to Settings > Privacy > Demo Bonus > Collect Reward. After that, claim it at a Spirit Mirror under Additional Content > Demo Bonus and equip it once the Charms screen has unlocked.

Is Sasaki Ganryu the last boss of the demo? Not any more. He ended the original June demo, but the August 25, 2026 update added more areas and a new boss, Daidara, after him.
