Quick answer: Launch guides document two endings in Phantom Blade Zero: the default Normal Ending and the True Ending, also called the Perfect Ending. Director Soulframe Liang said "8 different endings" in 2025, but nobody has published eight distinct finales, and Game Rant describes most of the others as variations of the regular ending. To get the True Ending, finish the purple-icon quests, all five Long Pillars, all four Acolyte Masks, both Crystal Puppet Eyes and every Quick Hand Zhang request before the finale. Treat Mirage Estate as the deadline for purple quests. Missed something late? Game Rant says you can load back to the Last Chance bell after the credits. Last checked October 30, 2026.
Phantom Blade Zero launched on October 29 and the most repeated question about its story is a numbers argument: eight endings or two? Pre-launch articles say eight. Launch-day walkthroughs list two. This guide sorts out what each source really says, then gives you the full True Ending checklist in one place, including the spots where the major guides disagree.
Light spoiler warning: this page names quests, regions, items and optional bosses. It does not describe what happens in either ending, and it does not name the final bosses.
How many endings does Phantom Blade Zero have?
The honest answer as of October 30 is two documented endings, plus an unknown number of variations on the regular one.
The eight figure comes from a December 2025 Game Rant interview, where Liang said:
"We have 8 different endings in the game, depending on how many side quests you complete." (Soulframe Liang, S-GAME founder and director)
Since launch, the picture has changed. Game Rant's own Perfect Ending guide now says the game "has multiple endings, most of which are variations of the regular ending". PowerPyx's True Ending guide lists "2 endings": Normal and True. Before launch, posters on r/PhantomBladeZero also shared a comment attributed to Liang on Bilibili: "Not eight endings, but it should have multiple endings." We could not open the original comment, so treat that one as reported, not confirmed.
| Source | Date | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Soulframe Liang, Game Rant interview | Dec 2025 | 8 endings, driven by side quests and items |
| Comment attributed to Liang, via Reddit | Oct 2026 | Not eight, but multiple (reported) |
| PowerPyx True Ending guide | Oct 29, 2026 | 2 endings: Normal and True |
| Game Rant Perfect Ending guide | Oct 29, 2026 | Multiple endings, most are variations of the regular one |
| Game Informer guide | Oct 28, 2026 | Multiple endings, the perfect one is called "The Final Battle" |
Our read: plan around two finales. Side-quest results can change details of the regular ending, so "8" may count those outcomes, but no published source has listed all eight yet. We will update this page if someone does.
What is the difference between the Normal and True endings?
The Normal Ending is the default. You get it by beating the final boss without meeting every requirement. Game Rant adds that side quests involving major NPCs can affect it, which fits the variations reading above.
The True Ending adds one more boss fight straight after the final boss. Game Informer's guide calls it the only satisfying ending in its headline, and TheGamer's writer, who earned it, says it is worth the extra time.
The two also pay out differently:
| Normal Ending | True Ending | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Default | Full checklist below |
| Extra boss fight | No | Yes |
| Steam achievement | All Dreams Must End (beat the final boss) | With Heart and Blood (All Comes to Light) |
| Bonus rewards | None listed | Aureate weapon, Broken Long Body material, Legacy Outfit |
Game Rant notes the Legacy Outfit is only new if you did not already get it from pre-ordering. The final-boss achievement mapping is reported by guides. Steam's achievement list only shows the hidden descriptions.
How do you get the True Ending? The full checklist
Game Informer's point about order is the most useful one here: "The following requirements don't necessarily have a set order." You only need them done before the finale, and the safest deadline is the door to Mirage Estate (more on that below). Most players will tick these off naturally, and Game Informer adds that the route "isn't that unreasonable" because it is mostly side content, not puzzles.
| Requirement | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Illusory Pipa | Village of Lu, Mandate's Encampment, Ruined Theater (Meigu Lake) | Collect 3 parts from bosses, have Myst repair it at the Pangzhen tavern |
| Mountain of Imprisonment | Far north of Meigu Lake | Clear the mist with the Pipa, then finish the region for Crystal Puppet Eye [Yin] |
| Crimson Manor | Gate under the Sha-Chi tower, Weeping Creek Valley | Open it with the Puppet's Tongue, beat the hidden boss for Crystal Puppet Eye [Yang] |
| 4 Acolyte Masks | Scarecrows in Village of Lu, Pangzhen, Meigu Lake, Crimson Manor | Beat each Acolyte boss for the Blazing, Thunder, Venom and Frost masks |
| Hidden realm | Snowy west side of Meigu Lake | Enter the mirror with all 4 masks, beat the boss, place both Eyes in the statue |
| 5 Long Pillars | See the list below | Finish the Bloodline Awakening quest |
| Secrets at the Heart of the Lake | Starts in Village of Lu | Find Firefly's Memory Flowers, then follow the quest to the hidden realm |
| Quick Hand Zhang | 5 regions | Find all 3 relics in green-glowing chests at each stop |
| Purple-icon quests | Quest tab | Complete every one |
| Beat the game | Mount Soulrend | Win the final boss and the extra fight that follows |
Which purple quests matter?
Game Rant names eight: Whence the Weeping, Crimson Manor, The Herald's Illusion, Pillars of Kunlun, Sha-Chi Powered Boat, Allure of Vanity, Illusory Pipa and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. PowerPyx's list, as cited by PBZ Builds, adds Deep in the Valley and Illusion of Inanis. Simple rule: if it has a purple icon, finish it. Many of these continue across regions, so one finished objective does not always mean the quest is done.
Where are the five Long Pillars?
- Pillar 1: Weeping Creek Valley
- Pillar 2: Crimson Forest
- Pillar 3: Meigu Lake
- Pillar 4: the hidden realm behind the Meigu Lake mirror
- Pillar 5: Mirage Estate
Game Rant and Game Informer put the fifth in the finale area, and Mirage Estate is that area. TheGamer lists Crimson Manor instead. We went with the two sources that agree.
Where guides disagree
- Crystal Puppet Eye [Yin]: Game Informer, GameBoost and PowerPyx's Mountain of Imprisonment guide all point to that region. TheGamer lists a chapter boss in the Village of Lu.
- Memory Flowers: TheGamer says find all six in the Village of Lu. PBZ Builds, citing PowerPyx, says the quest starts at the first one. Collect all six to be safe.
- Two Blade Masters: PowerPyx, as cited by PBZ Builds, requires the optional bosses Zhu Yuan (Meigu Lake Sha-Chi Tower) and Bi Feng (Mountain of Imprisonment). Game Informer and TheGamer do not list them. Beat them anyway, because the Steam achievement The Two Blade Masters needs both.
What are the points of no return?
There are two, and the game warns you at both.
- The door to Mirage Estate. After you collect the White Serpent Eye, Black Serpent Fang and Red Serpent Tongue, the door at the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen opens the way forward. Game Rant says the game warns you here if requirements are unfinished, and you can turn back. PowerPyx treats this door as the cutoff for the purple quests, so finish them first.
- The Last Chance bell in Mount Soulrend. This is the final gate. Game Informer's guide only names this "last chance" warning as its deadline, so the guides differ on how strict the first door is. Follow the stricter one. Before you pass the bell, listen to Inanis: Game Rant says that if she mentions nothing major left to resolve, you are clear to continue.
Inside Mirage Estate you can still finish the last Long Pillar and Zhang's final relics, so use that area before moving on. Keep a manual save at each region change as well. Side quests can fail as the story moves, so check the Journal when you reach somewhere new.
Can you still get the True Ending after finishing the game?
Usually, yes. Per Game Rant, once the credits roll you can either start a new cycle (New Game+) or load back to the Last Chance Bell. Choose the bell. Game Rant says you can then complete the remaining requirements and fight the final bosses again for the True Ending.
One caveat: the bell sits after the Mirage Estate door. If PowerPyx is right that purple quests lock at that door, the bell cannot fix a purple quest you skipped, and you would need a manual save from before it. That is the reason to keep one.
Your difficulty setting does not appear in any of the True Ending requirements above, so an easier mode should not lock you out. If you are still deciding, our difficulty modes guide covers Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker and 66 Days.
How rare is the True Ending right now?
Very rare, and it is too early to mean much. On October 30, about 30 hours after the 02:00 GMT unlock in our release time guide, Steam's public achievement stats showed:
| Steam achievement | Players |
|---|---|
| The Heart's Journey (escape the pursuers on the main road) | 89.5% |
| The Hunt (first chapter end boss, per PCGamesN) | 44.0% |
| Blossom of False Salvation (leave Village of Lu for Pangzhen) | 1.7% |
| With Heart and Blood (True Ending) | 0.1%, the lowest value Steam displays |
Steam lists 66 achievements in total, while the PS5 list has 36 trophies. On both platforms the True Ending reward can be missed, according to PowerPyx's trophy roadmap, which estimates 30 to 40 hours for the Platinum. Liang put the main story alone at "maybe 20–30 hours", so the True Ending route is the bulk of that extra time.
FAQ
How many endings does Phantom Blade Zero have? Two are documented so far: the Normal Ending and the True Ending. Director Soulframe Liang said 8 in a 2025 interview, but no published guide lists eight, and Game Rant says most are variations of the regular ending.
What is the bad ending in Phantom Blade Zero? Liang warned that rushing the main story could leave you with "a bad ending". Guides have not confirmed a separate bad ending. The Normal Ending is the default result if you skip the requirements.
Is the Perfect Ending the same as the True Ending? Yes. Game Rant, Game Informer and TheGamer say Perfect Ending, and PowerPyx says True Ending. Both describe the same route, which unlocks With Heart and Blood.
Can you miss the True Ending? Yes. PowerPyx treats the Mirage Estate door as the cutoff for purple quests, and the Last Chance bell is the final gate. The game warns you at both, and Game Rant says you can reload the bell after the credits, but a quest locked earlier may need an older manual save. Side quests can also fail, so read the Journal as you go.
Do you need New Game+ to see the True Ending? No. One run can do it. If you finish with something missing, load the Last Chance Bell before you consider New Game+.
Do you have to beat every Acolyte boss? Yes. You need all four masks to enter the hidden realm at Meigu Lake, which holds the fourth Long Pillar and the statue for the Crystal Puppet Eyes.
