Applies to Valheim 1.0, patch 1.0.21 (released October 28, 2026). Mod versions and dates come from the live Thunderstore Valheim catalog and Hexium's Valheim mod list, both read on November 2, 2026. Requirements come from each mod's own page. We did not play-test all 20 picks, so a recent build means the author has updated the mod, not that we certify it.
Valheim's mod scene came through 1.0 in good shape, but it moved. Many of the best-known mods no longer have a current build where most players learned to find them, and that catches out anyone following an older list.
This guide gives you a short list for each playstyle, the current build of every pick, who has to install it, and the clashes to plan around. It skips installation steps, because each mod's own page has those.
Quick answer: Yes, mods work on Valheim 1.0.21, on PC only. Start with Quick Stack, Store, Sort, Trash, Restock, Gizmo, PlantEasily and Equipment and Quick Slots, which change chores and leave progression alone. For bigger changes, add Epic Loot or Warfare. Watch for one trap: Thunderstore now marks AzuCraftyBoxes, CreatureLevelAndLootControl and Jewelcrafting as deprecated, and their current builds are on Hexium.
Do Valheim mods still work on 1.0?
Yes, though Iron Gate makes no promises. The studio's 1.0 FAQ says:
"Since we don't have any official mod support, we cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases."
The numbers show how far the scene has recovered since launch day on September 9:
- 14,303 Valheim packages are listed on Thunderstore, and 5,896 of them are deprecated.
- 8,407 remain active. Of those, 4,608 have been updated since 1.0, and 795 have been updated since 1.0.21.
- BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2360, the loader most mods depend on, was published on October 28, the day 1.0.21 arrived.
- Hexium lists 2,018 mods and 263 modpacks.
Treat "not updated" as unknown, not broken. A small mod can survive a patch untouched, while a mod that hooks into inventory or networking may need a rebuild.
Why did popular mods disappear from Thunderstore?
They mostly didn't disappear. Their authors marked them deprecated there and kept shipping on Hexium. Neither store page explains why, although r/ModdedValheim players report that several authors have moved.
This matters because players still recommend these mods by name, and the old copies remain listed. Compare the builds:
| Mod | Thunderstore (deprecated) | Hexium (current) |
|---|---|---|
| AzuCraftyBoxes | 1.8.19, Sep 14 | 1.8.28, Oct 12 |
| AzuAutoStore | 3.1.4, Sep 14 | 3.1.7, Oct 3 |
| AzuExtendedPlayerInventory | 2.4.14, Sep 14 | 2.6.6, Oct 30 |
| CreatureLevelAndLootControl | 4.6.4, May 2025 | 5.0.7, Oct 12 |
| Jewelcrafting | 2.0.1, May 6 | 2.0.11, Oct 5 |
| Sailing | 1.1.8, Feb 5 | 1.1.12, Oct 11 |
| TargetPortal | 1.2.3, Feb 22 | 1.2.7, Sep 23 |
| Backpacks | 1.3.8, Feb 11 | 1.3.10, Sep 11 |
The older Smoothbrain builds predate 1.0, and the CLLC Compatibility addon's author says CreatureLevelAndLootControl 4.6.4 "calls game APIs that have changed in Valheim 1.0." If you want these mods, use the current build. Version 5 of CreatureLevelAndLootControl also changes gameplay and defaults, so read its release notes before you upgrade an existing world.

Which mods should a first-time modder install?
Start with mods that remove chores. Quick Stack saves the most time, and Gizmo and PlantEasily solve problems you'd otherwise fight by hand. You can drop any of them without rebuilding a world. Our Valheim building guide and farming guide show which jobs they speed up.
Crafting from chests is the real decision. In the 240-comment r/valheim thread behind this guide, one player who tried it wrote: "To me, it's not really QoL, it really does go further than that." Others said they had done their time with the tedious parts. Both are right. It removes a big part of Valheim's base routine, so try it on a second world before adding it to your main one.
For a player who has already finished the game, the bigger mods make more sense. One reply to a 750-hour player asking where to start was: "Epic Loot! Unless you do not like Diablo." Its page says the mod is still in Early Access, so expect changes, and it needs to be on the server and with every player.
FarLands is the newest pick, with just 3,246 downloads, and it was updated today. It is client-side, so your server and friends need nothing. Its author notes that on a server you only see far bases you have already been near. A mod this young can change fast, so keep it out of any setup you can't afford to troubleshoot.
Which Valheim mods conflict with each other?
Most serious conflicts come from two mods trying to own the same system. Check these before you build a profile:
- Inventory mods: ExtraSlots says it is incompatible with mods that alter the inventory in a similar way. Pick one of ExtraSlots, Equipment and Quick Slots or AzuExtendedPlayerInventory.
- Valheim Plus and Smoothbrain mods: Hexium's compatibility panel lists the Grantapher fork as incompatible with CreatureLevelAndLootControl, Jewelcrafting, Sailing, Farming, Backpacks, TargetPortal and PassivePowers.
- Jewelcrafting and Epic Loot: Hexium also flags this pair as incompatible, so pick one gear system.
- World generation: Riverheim needs the same version on the server and every client, and you start it on a new world. Its author says Riverheim and vanilla worlds are two-way incompatible, so a world made with it must keep it installed.
Removing some mods can also cost you items. ExtraSlots warns that "If you had items in slots and then run the game without this mod installed the items will be lost," though it adds that an automatic backup can restore them. Back up your character and world before you change a profile, and treat that as part of the routine for every mod.
Content mods bring a different risk. Warfare adds items that exist only while the mod is installed, so a group should agree on it before starting a world. Its author also says it ties in with their Armory mod for extra crafting materials.
Do mods disable achievements in Valheim 1.0?
They can. Iron Gate's 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 hotfix notes say: "Achievements can be now be opted into even if you have used devcommands or mods" through a new devcommand. The opt-in command, with no spaces, is:
yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway
That line implies mods can affect eligibility, but Iron Gate does not list which ones. If a clean completion matters to you, keep one vanilla character and world. Our Valheim achievements guide covers what else locks them.
Can you use mods with console players or crossplay?
Console players can't install mods. The FAQ says: "Since we have no mod support on PC, there will also be no mod support for consoles for 1.0, and there will be no Steam Workshop featured."
That rules out anything every player must install. In a mixed group, PC players can still run client-only mods such as Gizmo, PlantEasily or Equipment and Quick Slots, because the console players never need them. A shared gameplay change has to run entirely on the server instead. ServersideQoL's author says it is "designed and tested for dedicated servers with vanilla/console clients." It does nothing on its own, and its features come as separate modules.
Iron Gate has not documented how BepInEx behaves with crossplay switched on, so test any setup on a spare world before your group commits. Our dedicated server guide covers the hosting side.
Will the next Valheim patch break my mods?
It might, so plan for it. Iron Gate's Mistlands patch notes said mods "are only compatible with the latest Live version of the game," and told players whose game wouldn't start to make sure "you don't have any mods installed." Both points still hold.
Iron Gate is still patching 1.0, so check the Valheim patch notes before you blame a mod. After an update, wait for the loader and any library your mods rely on, then update the mods themselves. Mod managers such as r2modman and Gale keep separate profiles, which makes it easy to fall back to vanilla while you wait.
FAQ
Does Valheim Plus work on 1.0? The maintained version is the Grantapher fork, at 10.4.0 from October 25. The original ValheimPlus package on Thunderstore is deprecated and was last updated in December 2022.
What is the best mod site for Valheim? It depends on the mod. Nexus Mods, Thunderstore and Hexium all carry Valheim mods, and some authors now publish on only one of them. Check the update date before you install anything.
Are there Valheim mods on Xbox, PS5 or Switch 2? No. Iron Gate says there is no mod support on consoles for 1.0.
Is there a Steam Workshop for Valheim? No. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ confirms that no Steam Workshop is included.
Are paid Valheim mods allowed? Iron Gate's Regarding Mods statement says the studio "does not condone locking modded content behind a paywall." Voluntary donations are fine.
Can I add mods to an existing world? Most client-side quality-of-life mods can be added at any time. World generation mods such as Riverheim need a new world, and you should back up before adding any content mod.
Start small, and add one mod at a time so you can spot what caused a problem. A short list of current mods will serve you better than a 50-mod profile that dies with the next patch.
