EA FC 26 Best Cheap Endgame Team: How to Build a 96+ Squad for Almost Free (Pre-Season, August 2026)

EA Sports FC 26 in-game player render — building a cheap endgame squad in Pre-Season

Quick answer (TLDR): The cheapest endgame squad in EA FC 26 history is available right now, and most of it costs zero coins. Between the Pre-Season Completionist (free FUTTIES ICON Del Piero across weekly groups I–IV, the last of which opens 3 September), the Season 10 Double Trouble objectives (free FUTTIES ICON Robin van Persie), the Ultimate Rewind Gauntlet board, the Season 10 Pass (13 FUTTIES-rarity players, several at the 99 cap) and the 95+ Encore Icon Player Pick for 1,000 Pre-Season Tokens, you can fill 7 to 9 of 11 slots with 96+ cards without touching the transfer market. Then EA removed every entry requirement from the PlayStyles Lab — "all OVR, stat, and rarity entry requirements have been removed, making every Player Item fully eligible" (ea.com) — so a cheap card can now carry five PlayStyle+ and play like a meta one. Budget 0 coins for the free XI, roughly 100–200k to fill the gaps with fodder, and anything above that is pure luxury. Your coins die on 25 September, so under-spending is the only real mistake.

Every year there's a two-week window where Ultimate Team stops being expensive and starts being a toy box. That window is open. Ultimate Rewind put more than 500 special Player Items back into packs on 21 August (ea.com), the Pre-Season Best Of re-releases are stacking more on top of that, and the pool of players still grinding is shrinking daily. Supply is at a cycle high and demand is falling off a cliff.

That combination does something that never happens in December: it makes an endgame squad a grind problem, not a coin problem. The question isn't "how many coins do I need?" any more — it's "which free cards do I claim first, and where do I actually have to spend?"

This guide answers exactly that. It's the build companion to our what to spend coins on before FC 27 ranking: that post decides whether a purchase is worth it, this one hands you the squad.

Why is an endgame squad suddenly this cheap?

Three things happened in the space of two weeks, and they compound.

1. The pack pool got flooded. Ultimate Rewind brought back the whole season's promo history — Ultimate Scream, Winter Wildcards, Future Stars, Joga Bonito, Thunderstruck, TOTY, TOTS and more — with EA confirming that "all four batches of players re-released during FUTTIES are now available in Packs, bringing more than 500 players back into the pool" (ea.com). Community trackers list the Pre-Season Best Of Re-Release Batch 1 as landing on Friday 28 August with 99-rated FUTTIES ICONs — Maradona, Henry, Ibrahimović and Ronaldinho are the names circulating (fifaultimateteam.it). Treat the exact list as unconfirmed until the content drop, but the direction is certain: more elite supply, every single week.

2. The free-card faucet opened. Pre-Season is EA's goodbye tour, and it pays in players. There are currently multiple free 96–99 rated items sitting in objective boards that cost nothing but matches.

3. The PlayStyles Lab stopped gatekeeping. This is the underrated one. In the same update EA raised the Lab's ceiling to five PlayStyle+ per item and, in its own words, "all OVR, stat, and rarity entry requirements have been removed, making every Player Item fully eligible" (ea.com). Before this, PlayStyle+ was a privilege of expensive cards. Now a 96 you got for free can wear Rapid+, Finesse Shot+, Quick Step+ and two more — which is most of what "meta" actually means in FC 26.

Put together: the cards are cheaper, several are free, and the gap between a cheap card and an expensive one has been compressed by a system EA gave everyone for nothing.

What free 96+ cards can you still claim in Pre-Season?

This is the part to do first, because objectives have deadlines and coins don't. Every item below costs zero coins — only matches and fodder you already own.

SourceWhat you getDeadline
Pre-Season Completionist (weekly groups I–IV)FUTTIES ICON Alessandro Del Piero + bonus 83+ Player PickGroups released 13 / 20 / 27 Aug and 3 Sep — finish all four before Season 10 closes
Season 10 Double TroubleFUTTIES ICON Robin van Persie + 20× 87+ Rare Gold Players Pack (completionist bonus)Weekly, runs with Season 10
Ultimate Rewind GauntletFree 98-rated Player Item for 8 of 10 challenges + 5× 91+ Rare Gold Players PackShort window — treat 31 August as the cutoff
Season 10 Pass (Level 30)13 FUTTIES-rarity Season Pass players, several at the 99 OVR capSeason 10
Pre-Season Token Store95+ Encore Icon Player Pick (1 of 4) — 1,000 Tokens, no coinsExpires when Season 10 ends

Objective boards rotate, so open each one in-game before you plan around it — the Gauntlet board in particular is on a short timer (our full Gauntlet walkthrough covers which two challenges to skip). Two entries need a note.

The Season 10 Pass is the single most efficient free source in the game right now — thirteen special players for playing matches you'd play anyway. If you hit Season 9 Level 22 you already hold a token that unlocks the Season 10 Premium Pass for free; otherwise it's 500,000 coins or 1,000 FC Points, and at this point in the cycle the coin version is a legitimate buy rather than a rip-off.

The 95+ Encore Icon Player Pick is the best value on any shelf in FC 26 — a guaranteed 95-or-better ICON for 1,000 Pre-Season Tokens, and the Token cap was tripled from 1,000 to 3,000 per week for Season 10 — EA's Season 10 Pitch Notes state "the Token limit has been upped from 1,000 to 3,000" (ea.com). One week of normal play funds it. Our Pre-Season Token Store rankings covers the rest of the shelf, but if you only buy one thing, buy this.

Realistically, working through that table gets a returning player seven to nine starters at 96 or above without spending a coin.

How do you build the free XI? (the 0-coin squad)

Here's the shape. Positions will vary with your pulls, so treat it as a slot plan, not a fixed lineup.

SlotFill it withCost
STFree ICON from Pre-Season Completionist (Del Piero) or Double Trouble (van Persie)0
ST / CF95+ Encore Icon Player Pick from the Token Store0 coins (1,000 Tokens)
Wingers ×2Season 10 Pass players — several land at the 99 cap0
CAM / CMSeason 10 Pass player + a Rewind special from free packs0
CDMGauntlet reward item (multi-position, defensively rated)0
Fullbacks ×2Season Pass defenders + a Carpet Football or Va Va Voom Evolution0 coins (Tokens)
CBs ×2Free 87+/91+ pack pulls from Gauntlet and Double Trouble bonuses0
GKAny 90+ keeper from free packs — GK Evolutions exist in FC 26 if you're short0

The two Evolution slots are what turn this from "a squad of free cards" into "a squad that wins games". Class on Grass (200 Tokens) pushes a striker toward 98 OVR, Va Va Voom (1,000 Tokens) is a +40 PAC attacking overhaul for any non-CB up to 97, and Carpet Football (500 Tokens) adds +40 PAS plus defensive coverage at any position up to 97. At a 3,000-Token weekly cap, you can run the 95+ Icon Pick one week and two Evolutions the next.

Then take every one of those cards into the PlayStyles Lab and max the PlayStyle+ slots. With entry requirements gone, there is no reason for a single card in your XI to be running fewer than five. This is free stat-equivalent value and most players still haven't touched it — our PlayStyles Lab walkthrough has the exact route.

Where do you actually need to spend coins?

Two places, and they're both cheap.

Fodder for the free objectives. Almost every objective above has a squad requirement somewhere, and buying fodder card-by-card at market price is the slowest, most expensive way to feed them. The 10× 85+ Upgrade SBC is now unlimited repeatable and costs roughly 15,500 coins on console / 15,750 on PC per completion at the time of writing, returning ten guaranteed 85-or-better rare golds (full breakdown here). Around six to ten completions — call it 100–160k coins — covers the fodder for everything in this guide with change left over. That is the single highest-leverage coin spend left in FC 26.

Filling the two or three slots your pulls didn't cover. Re-released Rewind and Best Of specials are at the cheapest they will ever be, and they get cheaper every Friday as another batch lands. Prices move daily, so check the market yourself before buying rather than trusting any number printed in an article — but the practical read is that positions the free route doesn't fill (usually GK and one CB) cost a fraction of what the same card commanded in April.

Everything else is optional. If you want the full 99 ICON front three now that Best Of is putting them back in packs, that's a 400k+ luxury tier — genuinely fun, completely unnecessary for a squad that wins.

Short on coins to finish the fodder loop? Your balance resets to zero on 25 September either way, so the only question is how much you get to enjoy first.

What should you not waste coins on right now?

  • Gambling on packs for tradeable profit. With 500+ items flooding back in, the market only falls from here. Anything you pull is worth less tomorrow and worth nothing on 25 September.
  • Buying the 99 version of a card you already have at 96. The gap is two or three points of a stat you won't feel. The gap between five PlayStyle+ and two is enormous, and that's free.
  • Hoarding for "the last SBC". There isn't one. Content winds down into launch, not up.
  • Skipping the carryover objectives to grind the market. The Pre-Season Completionist I–IV groups pay 10k coins each, and finishing all four adds 20k coins plus an 83+ tradeable Player Pick60,000 coins total that arrive inside FC 27 (ea.com). Trading in a dying market cannot beat that hourly rate. Full list in our FC 27 carryover guide.

How long do you actually have?

Short version: about four weeks, with earlier internal deadlines that matter more than the final one.

Note that Season 10 is the final FC 26 season and EA has not published a to-the-day end date in the Season 10 Pitch Notes; community trackers place the close around 24 September, immediately before FC 27 launch. Build to the 18 September early-access date and you'll never be caught short.

Is it even worth building a squad this late?

It's the question every FUT subreddit is asking this week, and the honest answer is: it depends what you enjoy. Players who treat Ultimate Team as a season-long progression curve tend to stop here, because there's nothing left to climb toward — several long-time players in the r/EASportsFC endgame discussion described stepping away after TOTS or FUTTIES specifically to make the next cycle feel fresh again.

But the counter-argument in that same thread is the more useful one for anyone still logging in: this is the only point in the year when the cards you spent nine months not being able to afford are simply there. One player framed the appeal as finally getting to use players who are otherwise permanently out of reach; another pointed out that new and returning players are joining right now precisely because everything is affordable and easy to grind.

If that's you, the practical case is strong. You're not investing — you're cashing out. A balance you don't convert into a squad is a balance you delete on 25 September, and the run-in to launch is also when Champions and Rivals rewards feed straight into FC 27 carryover, so the games aren't wasted either.

FAQ

How many coins do I need for a cheap endgame team in EA FC 26? Realistically 0 to 200,000. The free objective and Season Pass route fills seven to nine starters at 96+, and 100–160k of 85+ x10 fodder covers every squad requirement you'll hit along the way. Anything beyond that is buying luxury, not competitiveness. Our full squad budget breakdown has the tier-by-tier maths.

Is the Season 10 Premium Pass worth 500,000 coins at this stage? Yes, if you have the balance and plan to keep playing to launch. Thirteen FUTTIES-rarity players — several at the 99 cap — for coins that expire on 25 September is a clear win. If you hit Season 9 Level 22, check your unlock token first: you may already own it for free.

Do any of these cards carry over to FC 27? No. Players, coins and club progress all stay in FC 26. Only the objective rewards carry — the Pre-Season Completionist track delivers 60,000 coins, four 81+ x3 packs and an 83+ tradeable Player Pick inside FC 27 from 16 October, and you must log in on the same EA Account and redeem within one month.

Should I use Evolutions on free cards or save the slots? Use them. Evolution slots reset with the cycle and have no salvage value, so an unused slot on 25 September is a wasted one. Class on Grass at 200 Tokens is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in the game right now.

Will cards get even cheaper if I wait? Yes, marginally — each Best Of batch adds supply. But the free objective deadlines don't wait, and waiting to save a small percentage on a currency you're about to lose is the worst trade in Ultimate Team. Claim the free cards now, buy the gaps whenever you feel like it.

Do Pre-Season Tokens carry over to FC 27? No. Pre-Season Tokens are FC 26 only and expire with Season 10 — unspent Tokens are simply lost, so run the store down to zero before the season closes.
