Applies to: Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, on Game Update 2.1.1.0 (live 13 October 2026) during Season 5: Siege of Vegas, including the client hotfix of 22 October 2026. Updated 22 October 2026. First published 14 October 2026, when the cap was still live and unacknowledged.
Quick answer: The weapon XP cap is gone. After Season 5 launched on 13 October 2026, players measured weapon XP stalling at roughly 300 XP per minute. On 15 October Battlefield Studios called it "an unintended issue affecting XP earn rates across modes and hardware progression (such as weapons)" caused by "backend configuration changes", and reverted it. A day later its known-issues roundup confirmed the settings were reverted "on October 15" and that "earn rates have returned to normal." The throttle lasted about two days. If your XP feels slow again this week, the likeliest reason is that the 2x XP weekend EA extended to Tuesday 20 October has ended. EA never confirmed the 300 figure and has still never published a single Hardware XP number.
When this page first went up on 14 October, EA had said nothing. Four player threads named the same 300 figure, and the official changelog had no XP line at all. That changed within 24 hours. This refresh covers what EA admitted and the timeline. It also covers the "did it come back?" question now circulating on r/Battlefield6, and what actually levels a gun fastest now the throttle is gone.

Is the XP cap still in Battlefield 6?
No. Nothing EA has published since 16 October, including the 21 October community update and the 22 October hotfix note, says it came back.
The first statement went out on the official Battlefield Comms account on 15 October, two days after Season 5 went live: "Following the launch of Season 5, backend configuration changes resulted in an unintended issue affecting XP earn rates across modes and hardware progression (such as weapons). These backend changes have now been reverted, and our team is actively monitoring telemetry to ensure earn rates return to intended levels across all experiences."
The follow-up came in the Season 5 Siege of Vegas Known Issues and Status Roundup on 16 October. Its first item reads: "Progression and XP Earn Rates: Following the launch of Season 5, an unintended backend configuration issue throttled earn rates across core modes and weapon mastery progression. We have since reverted these settings on October 15, and have confirmed that earn rates have returned to normal."
Three details in that wording matter:
- It was server-side. "Backend configuration" means no patch was needed to add it or remove it. That is also why it never appeared in any update notes.
- It hit more than weapons. EA's own scope is "XP earn rates across modes" plus "hardware progression". The community had focused on weapon XP, but the official statement covers core-mode earn rates generally.
- EA called it unintended. Whether you believe that is up to you, but it is the only official position, and it is the one we cite.
None of the client patches since launch lists an XP change. Hotfix 1 on 15 October fixed audio cutting out. A second download followed on 16 October with no changelog at all. The hotfix deployed on 22 October is described by DICE in one line: "We just deployed a client hotfix to improve stability on the Vegas Strip and Area 51 maps."

From the first reports to the official revert was roughly 48 hours. That is fast by live-service standards. The speed is also why some coverage reads it as a quiet change that got caught, not a bug. MP1st's headline called the cap "Silently Added".
Why does my XP still feel capped?
This is the live question this week. A new r/Battlefield6 thread asks it outright: "Did the XP cap 'bug' get reintroduced?" Nothing in EA's published statements suggests it was. The most useful reply in that thread points at the more boring explanation: "They also had 2XP weekend. So everyone was getting double XP. They could've 'unintentionally' reintroduced the XP cap but 2XP ending could also be what you're seeing now."
Here is how to tell which one you are seeing:
- Compare against the right baseline. If your reference matches were played over the 2x XP weekend or its extension to Tuesday 20 October, they ran at double XP. Normal rates will look like half by comparison. That is the 2x XP ending, not a cap returning.
- Check which track is slow. Battlefield 6 runs Career XP, Hardware XP and Battle Pass XP separately. Revives, spotting, squad spawns and objective play pay Career and Battle Pass XP but no Hardware XP. A support-heavy match can post a huge score and barely move your gun.
- Check the mode. Custom Portal experiences pay an inflated match bonus instead of per-kill XP. A gun that levels slowly in Custom Portal is working as designed. Verified experiences pay full XP.
- Look for a wall, not a slope. The Season 5 throttle showed up as XP stopping past a fixed rate, which is why players could put a single number on it. If your XP per match keeps rising with kills, including in your best matches, a wall like that is unlikely, though a single match can sit under any threshold, so treat this as a strong hint rather than proof.
Other players in the same thread report the opposite experience to a cap. One wrote that they "never saw it and had multiple 20k point games with like 80k xp", which is consistent with uncapped earn rates.
Was it really 300 XP per minute?
That figure was never confirmed, and EA's statements do not contain it.
The 300-per-minute number came from players timing their own matches, and four separate threads arrived at the same figure, which is decent evidence of a real ceiling. But EA's wording is "throttled earn rates", not a cap with a value. Coverage also disagreed on the shape. Reddit threads described a per-minute rate, while MP1st described "a 300,000 XP cap on weapons (and it seems overall progression)". Both cannot be precise descriptions of the same limit, and EA has not said which, if either, was right.
The deeper problem has not changed since this page first went up. EA has never published a Hardware XP value of any kind: no per-rank cost, no earn rate, no ceiling. EA's progression article describes the whole economy in adjectives, such as "a small amount of passive Hardware XP" and "a significant amount of Hardware XP". We checked the progression article, the Season 5 hub, the Season 5 roadmap and the full 2.1.1.0 notes, and none of them has a number. That is why a throttle could run for two days with nobody able to prove it from official data, and why any "the cap cost you X weapon ranks" figure has no published basis: the pages we checked never state what a weapon rank costs.
Pure arithmetic on the community figure: 300 XP per minute is a ceiling of 18,000 Hardware XP per hour on one gun. What that equals in ranks is unknowable on public data.
What did Update 2.1.1.0 actually change in progression?
Nothing that explains the throttle, which fits EA's "backend configuration" explanation. The PROGRESSION section of the 2.1.1.0 notes is three lines long:
- "Added a Season 4 catch-up challenge for the BROD 3."
- "Added a Season 4 catch-up challenge for the Interdictor."
- "Added a Season 4 catch-up challenge for the VSSM."
The only other XP-adjacent entries in 2.1.1.0 are a Battlefield Pro line describing "a 15% XP boost" and a bug fix noting the "Full XP" tag "no longer appears incorrectly when playing in certain languages." The word "capped" appears once in the patch, in a Portal line capping two water settings.
So the patch notes were never going to settle it. A server-side setting does not ship in a client changelog, and that is exactly what EA later said happened.

Why did the Ultimate Shortcut Kit timing make it worse?
Because EA put a progression skip on sale the same day the throttle went live.
The Ultimate Shortcut Kit released on 13 October 2026 at $29.99 standalone. Its store description opens: "Instantly master every class with the Ultimate Shortcut Kit." Per class it grants 7 weapons and 2 vehicles at 100% mastery, plus one training path (Frontliner for Assault, Fire Support for Support, Combat Engineer for Engineer, Spec Ops for Recon) and a gadget bundle.
| What you get | Figure |
|---|---|
| Weapons at 100% mastery | 28 (7 per class, 4 classes) |
| Vehicles at 100% mastery | 8 (2 per class) |
| Standalone price | $29.99 |
| Effective cost per maxed weapon | about $1.07 |
| Release date | 13 October 2026 |
EA's two surfaces word it differently. The ea.com buy page promises "immediate access to fully progressed weapons and attachments". The platform store listing names weapons and vehicles at 100% mastery and does not mention attachments separately. Full mastery should carry the attachments, since Hardware Rank is what unlocks them, but only one of those descriptions is the product you buy.
One r/Battlefield comment from launch week summed up the grievance: "They had spent like 2 seasons yapping about how awesome their weapon XP buffs were. Now they silently gut it at the same time they put the game on Gamepass and bring back the unlock packs."
We still cannot tell you the throttle was there to sell the kit. EA says it was unintended, and nothing published contradicts that. What changed since our first version is the outcome. EA reverted it within two days, so the kit is now a convenience purchase against normal earn rates, not against a throttled grind. This week's r/Battlefield6 thread on the kits shows the split. One player shrugs them off: "They've returned after year one in every BF game going back to bf3." Another counters that a kit "won't magically make you a better player even if you have all attachments unlocked."
How does Hardware XP actually work?
The cap is gone, but the system around it is unchanged. Most players still lose weapon XP to a misunderstanding rather than to any limit.
EA defines Hardware XP as the track that "Progresses Hardware Rank with Primary Weapons, Secondary Weapons, and Vehicles. Hardware Rank unlocks new functional additions to Hardware - e.g. weapon attachments, vehicle equipment - as well as other content like Camouflages and, in the case of weapons, special Weapon Packages." Battle Pass XP is "EARNED IN TANDEM WITH CAREER XP AT A 1:1 RATIO."
The consequence: Career XP and Hardware XP are different currencies, and most XP sources only pay the first one. Per EA's action list, only two entries pay Hardware XP:
- Kills: "Rewards Career and Battle Pass XP, as well as Hardware XP for the specific weapon or vehicle you used to earn the kill."
- Assists: the same, and "An assist can include being the driver - or passenger - of a vehicle that earns a kill."
The Match Completion Bonus is the exception that also reaches guns. It "Rewards a flat bonus for Career, Weapon, and Battle Pass XP depending on time in match and result", such as a win or loss.
EA also designed part of Hardware XP to be passive. Its progression page says the change "makes the levelling journey for all weapons and vehicles significantly quicker with a combination of time-based and skill-based Hardware XP earning opportunities." A per-minute ceiling cuts directly into that time-based half, which is partly why the community reaction was so sharp.
This is also why most XP Boosts disappoint people levelling a gun. The 15-minute boosts EA hands out through the onboarding ranks multiply Career and Battle Pass XP, not the weapon. Our Battlefield 6 XP boost guide covers how they stack. The one Hardware XP Boost EA names anywhere sits inside a paid bundle: the Phantom Pack, which EA's buy page lists as "4 Soldier Skins, 2 Weapon Packages, Career and Hardware XP Boosts, and more." The same page's edition table names it the "Phantom XP Boost Set: 2X Hardware XP + 2X Career XP", so it doubles weapon XP, but EA publishes no duration for it.
What levels guns fastest now the throttle is gone?
With normal earn rates back, the burst-versus-steady question from our first version no longer applies. Kill volume with the exact weapon is the lever again. In order:
- Use only the gun you want to level. Hardware XP is weapon-specific and nothing transfers between guns.
- Play Verified experiences, not Custom Portal. EA says "All Multiplayer experiences, as well as Verified Community Experiences in Portal, grant full XP towards this progression system". Custom Portal modes swap per-kill XP for an inflated completion bonus. Our bot lobby XP guide covers that trap in detail.
- Finish the match. The completion bonus is one of the few flat Weapon XP payments, and it scales with time in match and result.
- Keep the gun out. EA designed part of Hardware XP to be time-based, so the weapon you are levelling earns a small passive amount while you use it, on top of kills.
- Levelling a vehicle instead? EA counts driver and passenger assists for a vehicle that earns a kill, and assists pay Hardware XP to "the specific weapon or vehicle you used to earn the assist". EA never says a passenger assist reaches the gun in your loadout, so treat riding along as vehicle progress, not weapon progress.
- Clear the Season 4 catch-up challenges. The BROD 3, Interdictor and VSSM challenges from 2.1.1.0 are your route back to weapons you missed. Our Season 5 Battle Pass guide covers what else is recoverable.
Two dated changes from EA's 21 October community update affect what to level next:
- 10 November (Season 5 Phase 2, Casino Heist): EA says it has "looked at nerfing the extended mags on the SCW-10 and KV9 and also buffing some underused attachments available across many weapons", with weapon balance "scheduled to arrive in Season 5 Phase 2." If you are grinding either SMG for its extended magazine, the payoff may shrink. See our best SMG rankings for where both stand today.
- 8 December (Season 5 Phase 3): Platoons launch, and "You will also earn an XP bonus whenever you play with fellow Platoon members in your squad." EA has given no size for that bonus.
For per-class unlock routes, our weapon unlocks guide and attachment points breakdown explain which bottleneck you are actually hitting: rank-locked, challenge-locked, or Attachment Point budget.
Lost two days of weapon XP to the throttle and still short of the attachments you want? Our Battlefield 6 services handle the grind: you pick the weapons and ranks, we put in the hours.

FAQ
Is the Battlefield 6 XP cap removed? Yes. Battlefield Studios reverted the backend settings that throttled XP on 15 October 2026. Its 16 October known-issues roundup confirmed that "earn rates have returned to normal." Nothing EA has published since says the throttle came back.
Was there really a 300 XP per minute cap? There was a real throttle. EA acknowledged one that "throttled earn rates across core modes and weapon mastery progression." The 300 per minute figure came from players timing their own matches, and EA never confirmed it. Coverage disagreed on the shape too: Reddit described a per-minute rate, while MP1st described a 300,000 XP cap.
Did the XP cap come back after the double XP weekend? Nothing EA has published says so. EA extended the 2x XP weekend to Tuesday 20 October 2026. Matches played after it ended earn roughly half what matches during it did, which is easy to mistake for a cap.
Did the throttle affect Career XP or just weapon XP? Both, per EA. The 15 October statement says it affected "XP earn rates across modes and hardware progression (such as weapons)." Players mostly noticed it on weapons because Hardware XP only comes from kills, assists, a small passive amount for time spent using the weapon, and the match completion bonus.
Will I get the lost XP back? EA has not announced any compensation or XP grant for the throttle period. Its statements cover the revert and telemetry monitoring only.
What is the fastest way to level a weapon in Battlefield 6 right now? Get kills and assists with that exact weapon in Verified experiences, not Custom Portal modes, and finish every match for the completion bonus. With normal earn rates restored, raw kill volume with the gun is the main lever again.
