WoW Forever Legacy Tree and Points: Every Perk, the 16-Point Cap and Whether You Need Alts

The WoW Forever Legacy Challenges window showing 30 of 65 Legacy Points and the six challenge categories

Updated November 4, 2026 (launch day): rebuilt against Blizzard's dedicated Legacy article and its November 3 "What's New and What Feels Familiar" post. Our September version said Legacy Points come from levelling alts. Blizzard says the opposite: the 16-point cap can be reached on one character. This version adds all 65 challenges, every named perk, the four rewards, Hardcore rules and how to reset your Legacy talents.

This full loadout costs $326.46 on Timesaver and is delivered within 12 days — see all WoW Forever prices.

Quick answer: The Legacy System is World of Warcraft: Forever's account-wide progression. You unlock it with your first Legacy Point, usually when your first character hits level 25, then open it with Y. There are 65 Legacy Challenges worth one point each across six categories. Points are shared by all your non-Hardcore characters, and each character spends them separately in three Legacy Trees: Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness. At launch a character can spend 16 points. One character can earn up to 29 on its own, so alts are optional. Extra points also fill a cosmetic Progress Track with four rewards, the last a spectral bear mount.

Last verified: Nov 4, 2026, 06:10 UTC against Blizzard's Legacy article. Forever launches today at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC), and players can start earning Legacy Points after launch through any qualifying challenge.

TL;DR

  • Unlocks at your first point: first character to level 25, 150 skill in a non-gathering primary profession, or exploring the whole world map. Hotkey Y.
  • 65 challenges, 65 points: Classes 27, Tradeskills 18, PvP 12, Adventure 2, Dungeons 3, Raids 3.
  • 16 spendable per character at launch, and Blizzard says you can reach that on one character. One character can earn up to 29.
  • The catch for PvE players: by our count of Blizzard's list, a single character that skips PvP can earn at most 14 points before raids open on December 9. PvP, raids or alts close the gap.
  • 21 named perks across the three trees, from Well Rested to Reagent Economy. Respec them at a class trainer in a major city.
  • Four cosmetic rewards on the Progress Track. Blizzard's screenshot puts the Reins of the Spectral Bear at 55 points, more than one character can earn today.

What is the Legacy System in WoW Forever?

It is horizontal, account-wide progression that rewards doing more of the game rather than getting stronger at level 60. Blizzard's Legacy System article splits it into three parts: Legacy Challenges (how you earn points), Legacy Perks (the trees you spend them in) and Legacy Rewards (cosmetics that unlock as your account total climbs).

The design goal changed how most guides, ours included, first described it. Blizzard's own wording:

"This new system encourages players to level multiple characters of different classes and tradeskills and experience the journey all over again, however leveling alternate (alts) characters is not required to benefit from the system. All character advantages can be unlocked on a single character." — Blizzard, Get to Know the WoW: Forever Legacy System

Blizzard repeated it on November 3 in What's New and What Feels Familiar: "At launch, each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points. You can reach that spending cap on a single character; creating alternate characters isn't required."

The system grew out of Hardcore. The Forever Deep Dive recap says it came from the team's love of "seeing so many players constantly leveling and making the world feel active." If you want the bigger picture on why Forever leans horizontal, read our horizontal vs vertical progression explainer.

How do you unlock the Legacy System?

You get access the moment you earn your first Legacy Point. Blizzard lists three ways:

  • Reach level 25 on any class. This is how most players will get there.
  • Reach 150 skill in a non-gathering primary profession such as Tailoring, Blacksmithing or Alchemy.
  • Explore the entire world map on one character.

Then click the shield icon on the menu bar or press Y. Forever goes live tonight, and the first Legacy Points will come from whichever qualifying challenge players finish first; for most, that is a character reaching 25. Our WoW Forever leveling explainer covers how long that takes.

How do you earn Legacy Points? All 65 challenges

Every challenge is worth exactly one point, and points are Battle.net account-wide for all your non-Hardcore characters. Here is Blizzard's full list:

CategoryPointsChallenges
Classes27Reach level 25, 45 and 60 with each of the 9 classes
Tradeskills18Reach 150, 225 and 300 in each of the 6 non-gathering primary professions
Player vs. Player12PvP ranks 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14 (5); Exalted with each Battleground reputation (4); Field of Honor season quests for weeks 4, 7 and 10 (3)
Adventure2Explore the entire world map on one character; complete the Lord Valthalak dungeon set questline
Dungeons3Kill the final boss of every level 15-25, 26-45 and 46-60 dungeon
Raids3Defeat Onyxia; all 13 Hyjal Summit bosses; all 8 Barrow Deeps bosses

Gathering professions (Mining, Herbalism, Skinning) are not on the list, so a Mining/Skinning character earns zero tradeskill points. That matters if you are choosing professions for points; our WoW Forever professions guide covers the trade-offs. The PvP points tie into the Field of Honor season described in our Darkspear Islands and honor guide.

Do you need alts for Legacy Points?

No, but the numbers are tighter than "no" suggests. Blizzard's breakdown for one character: 3 points from levelling, up to 6 from tradeskills, 12 from PvP, 2 from Adventure and 6 from dungeons and raids, for 29 in total.

Take PvP out of that and run the same list for a PvE player before the raids open:

  • 3 from levelling your class to 25, 45 and 60
  • 6 from two non-gathering professions taken to 300
  • 2 from exploring the map and finishing the Lord Valthalak questline
  • 3 from clearing every dungeon in all three brackets

That is 14 points, two short of the cap. The 3 raid points become possible when Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia's Lair unlock on December 9 (see our raid release date guide). Until then a PvE-only main fills the gap with low PvP goals such as rank 3, or with an alt: every other class you take to level 25 is one more point for your whole account. This is our arithmetic from Blizzard's challenge list, not a Blizzard statement.

In an r/wowforever thread on spending Legacy Points, one player put the early reality plainly: expect only a handful of points when you first hit 60 unless you stop to level alts. Blizzard's answer is the cap itself, which it says keeps new players from falling too far behind.

What perks are in each Legacy Tree?

Each character spends the account's points on its own, so your main can go Professions while an alt goes Adventure. Blizzard names 21 perks across the three trees:

Professions

  • Working Overtime: higher chance to gain a skill point in all tradeskills, including Lockpicking.
  • Bountiful Harvest: finds extra Scarce resources when mining, herbing or skinning.
  • Bartering: lower gold prices from vendors.
  • Performance Bonus: sometimes more Merchant's Favor from the Azeroth Commerce Authority (Alliance) or Durotar Supply and Logistics (Horde).
  • Master Chef: chance for cooking to produce extra results.
  • Luremaster: chance to fish up extra fish.
  • Dedicated Study: a daily cooldown that speeds up tradeskills, or gives free Elemental Essences once all are at 300.

Adventure

  • Well Rested: higher rested XP cap and faster rested XP gain.
  • Thrill of Adventure: a little health and mana back after every non-trivial kill.
  • High Alert: better stealth detection outside battlegrounds.
  • Field Guide: shorter 1-hour cooldown on placing camping features (see our camping guide).
  • Field Medicine: shorter Recently Bandaged debuff, but not in dungeons, raids or battlegrounds.
  • Talented: unlock talent points up to 5 levels earlier than normal.
  • Frequent Flier: cheaper, faster flights.

Resourcefulness

  • Gourmand: longer food buffs.
  • The Quick and the Dead: faster corpse runs and free party and raid buffs after you resurrect.
  • Reinforce: less durability damage from death.
  • For Great Honor: more Honor from PvP.
  • Permanence: longer party, raid and camping buffs.
  • Diplomat: more reputation.
  • Reagent Economy: class abilities stop needing vendor reagents, and tier 1 camping features cost no materials.

These are quality-of-life and economy perks, not raid power. Bartering is the one gold-savers should note: Method reports it takes up to 10% off mounts but not the riding skill, which our mount cost guide folds into the riding budget.

How do you reset Legacy talents?

At a class trainer. Every one of Blizzard's class deep dives carries the same line, for example the Hunter and Druid deep dive: "To change your talents (including Legacy talents), you'll need to visit a class trainer in one of the major cities." Your earned points never go away; only the way a character spends them changes. Class talent builds for launch are in our WoW Forever talents guide.

What are the Legacy Rewards?

Your account's total, not what any one character spends, unlocks the cosmetic Progress Track. Blizzard lists four rewards at launch, with more planned for each content update:

  • Replica Ironforge Air Rifle: a toy for shootouts with other players that stuns them and keeps score.
  • Spectral Bear Cub: a pet inspired by the dwarf hunter and his companion in the Forever cinematic.
  • Spectral Bear Tabard: a Legacy-exclusive tabard.
  • Reins of the Spectral Bear: a Legacy-exclusive spectral mount.

The WoW Forever Legacy Progress Track with rewards at 15, 25, 40 and 55 Legacy Points

Blizzard's screenshots come from a test account showing 30 points, so they illustrate the interface rather than a launch character. The Progress Track screenshot puts the rewards at 15, 25, 40 and 55 points. Blizzard doesn't list those thresholds in the text, so treat them as the screenshot's values. If they hold, the mount needs more points than one character can earn (29), so it is the one Legacy goal that really does push you toward alts.

How does the Legacy System work with Hardcore?

Hardcore isn't live at launch. Blizzard's November 3 post says it is "planned to follow a little after launch," and the Legacy article sets the rules in advance:

  • Challenges you complete on Normal, PvP or Roleplay rulesets do not count in Hardcore.
  • A challenge you complete in Hardcore counts on every other ruleset too.
  • Hardcore gets 12 new challenges of its own, replacing the PvP ones it can't offer.

If you're still picking a ruleset, our rulesets and playing with friends guide covers the choice.

What's next for Legacy?

Blizzard calls the system "in its infancy." Its plan: new challenges in every content release, new perks in the existing trees first and new trees later, Hardcore-only challenges and perks, and more cosmetics on the Progress Track. The spending cap is a launch figure, and new challenges raise the ceiling on what you can earn. The next dated content is the December 9 raid unlock, which adds the 3 raid points; the rest of the schedule is in our WoW Forever roadmap.

Points come from levels, professions and ranks. If you'd rather spend launch week playing your main, these cover the grinds that feed the Legacy list:

Forever is a fresh economy, and Blizzard has announced no gold or character transfer from Classic Era, Season of Discovery or Anniversary.

What changed on November 4, 2026?

  • Corrected: the old version said points come mainly from levelling alts. Blizzard says the 16-point cap can be reached on one character, with up to 29 earnable.
  • Added: all 65 challenges by category, the access rules (level 25, 150 skill or full map), all 21 perks, the four rewards, Hardcore rules and the respec rule.
  • Added: the PvE pre-raid math (14 points on one character before December 9).
  • Removed: beta-era wording. Beta ended in October and Forever launches today at 23:00 UTC.
  • Removed: the old "60g mount" line. Beta clients showed riding at 100 gold at level 40; see our mount cost guide.

FAQ

Can I buy this loadout instead of farming it? Yes: this loadout costs $326.46 on Timesaver, and a Timesaver pro completes it by hand within 12 days. How handover works and what happens if something goes wrong: account safety.

What is the Legacy System in WoW Forever? It is account-wide horizontal progression. You complete Legacy Challenges to earn Legacy Points, spend them per character in three Legacy Trees (Professions, Adventure, Resourcefulness) and unlock cosmetic rewards as your account total grows.

When do you unlock Legacy in WoW Forever? When you earn your first Legacy Point. For most players that is their first character reaching level 25. Reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary profession or exploring the whole world map also unlocks it. Open it with Y.

How many Legacy Points are there in WoW Forever? 65 at launch, one per Legacy Challenge: 27 from classes, 18 from tradeskills, 12 from PvP, 2 from Adventure, 3 from dungeons and 3 from raids.

What is the Legacy Point cap in WoW Forever? Each character can spend up to 16 points at launch. Your account can earn more than that; the extra points count toward the cosmetic Progress Track.

Do you need alts for Legacy Points in WoW Forever? No. Blizzard says the 16-point cap can be reached on a single character, which can earn up to 29. Without PvP, a single character can earn at most 14 before the December 9 raids, so PvP, raids or an alt fill the last two.

How do you reset Legacy talents in WoW Forever? Visit a class trainer in a major city. Blizzard's class deep dives say talent changes there include Legacy talents.

Do Legacy Points work on Hardcore? Not from other rulesets. Normal-ruleset challenges do not show up in Hardcore, but a challenge completed in Hardcore counts everywhere. Hardcore gets 12 challenges of its own.

Is the Legacy System pay-to-win? Blizzard sells no Legacy Points: each one comes from completing a challenge in game, and Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says the cosmetic rewards give no competitive gameplay advantage. The perks are quality-of-life and economy bonuses. Paid services that speed up levelling or professions still have to complete the same challenges in game.
