DBD 2v8 is back for its ninth run, and this one is the Alien iteration: the Xenomorph joins the Killer roster and the Nostromo Wreckage joins the map pool. If you have never touched the mode, it is two Killers hunting eight Survivors on supersized maps, with Classes instead of perks and Cages instead of Hooks. Almost every number you know from 1v4 is different here, which is exactly why so many players hit a wall in their first few matches.
This guide applies to 2v8 (V9 - Alien), live from September 8 to September 29, 2026, running on Dead by Daylight Patch 10.1.2. Every mechanic below is checked against BHVR's published 10.1.2 patch notes and the Official Dead by Daylight Wiki's 2v8 and Classes pages. The strategy commentary is timesaver.gg editorial analysis.
Quick answer: 2v8 V9 runs September 8 to September 29, 2026 (21 days). There are 16 playable Killers, and The Xenomorph is the new addition. The Legion has been removed from the roster. The headline additions are the Invoking Salt item, the Nostromo Wreckage map, and a Chest count raised from 20 to 27 per map. Survivors repair 8 of 13 Generators at 70 Charges each, so matches feel far slower than 1v4 even though there are eight of you.
When does DBD 2v8 end in September 2026?
2v8 V9 went live on September 8, 2026 and is scheduled to end on September 29, 2026 — a 21-day window, matching the length BHVR has used for recent iterations. The Official Dead by Daylight Wiki's Event Tracker lists the run as 08.09.2026 - 29.09.2026, and BHVR announced the same window through its official channels.
Two things worth knowing before you plan your grind:
- This is the tenth time 2v8 has appeared, counting every iteration since the original July 2024 test. BHVR has brought it back roughly every three to four months, so missing it is not fatal — but the Xenomorph-specific version will not necessarily return in the same form.
- 2v8 and standard queues cannot be mixed. You pick the mode, and matchmaking keeps the populations separate. That has a direct consequence for queue times, covered further down.
If you are chasing the event rewards rather than the mode itself, treat the first week as the safest window: player counts peak immediately after launch, and Killer queues degrade as the three weeks wear on.
What is new in 2v8 V9 compared to previous iterations?
Four changes define this iteration, and three of them came in the Patch 10.1.2 notes BHVR published alongside launch.
The Xenomorph is the new Killer. It is the first Alien-licensed Killer in 2v8 and it brings its tunnel network with it, adapted for the mode's scale.
Invoking Salt is a brand-new item. You find it in Chests. It is single-use, consumed the moment you place it, and takes 3 seconds to set down. Once placed, up to four Survivors can perform a 40-second interaction to use their Class's Unlockable Skill without being Hooked first, and everyone who completes the Ritual gains 5% Haste for 5 minutes, decaying by 1% per minute. Repeating the Ritual refreshes the Haste.
Nostromo Wreckage joins the map pool. That takes the 2v8 rotation to 22 supersized maps, with V9 adding both Dvarka Deepwood and Nostromo Wreckage to the list.
Chest spawns went from 20 to 27 per map. That is a 35% increase, and it is not cosmetic — it is the supply line for Invoking Salt. Without more Chests, the new item would be a once-a-match curiosity.
BHVR also tightened two long-standing frustrations: uncaging is now supported from the sides of a Cage rather than only the front, and a set of Vigil and Nowhere to Hide interaction bugs were fixed.
Which Killers are playable in 2v8?
There are 16 playable Killers in V9:
- Trapper
- Wraith
- Hillbilly
- Nurse
- Huntress
- Spirit
- Ghost Face
- Oni
- Deathslinger
- Executioner
- Blight
- Nemesis
- Mastermind
- Xenomorph
- Good Guy
- Dark Lord
The Legion is not playable. It is the only Killer ever added to 2v8 and then pulled back out: it was removed from the pool in the same iteration that added The Executioner and The Dark Lord, and it has not returned since. If you main Legion, there is no workaround — the Killer is simply not selectable.
One rule catches duos out constantly: each Killer can only be picked by one player at a time. You and your partner cannot both run Blight. Worse, you cannot both run the same Class either, so the draft matters. Lock in your pairing before you queue rather than arguing on the lobby timer.
Two balance passes landed in 10.1.2. Ghost Face had his Night Shroud charge rate raised from 15% to 20% and his Stalking rate from 10% to 15%, which meaningfully speeds up his snowball on maps this large. The Executioner's Punishment of the Damned gained 2 metres of width, a quiet but real buff on open 2v8 layouts where Survivors spread wide.
How does the Xenomorph work in 2v8?
The Xenomorph keeps its tunnel-and-Crawler-Mode identity but gets a set of innate skills tuned specifically for the mode. From BHVR's 10.1.2 notes, the 2v8 version of the Killer:
- Automatically destroys any turret that breaks Crawler Mode. In 1v4, a successful turret hit costs you the power and leaves the turret standing. In 2v8, the turret dies with the transformation.
- Recovers Crawler Mode 25% faster while outside the tunnels. You are not forced back underground to reload your power.
- Applies Mangled for 70 seconds on a Tail Strike, which is a long duration by 2v8 standards.
- Gains 5% Haste for 3 seconds after exiting a tunnel, giving you a real pressure burst on arrival rather than a standing-start chase.
Read those four together and the design intent is obvious: BHVR wants the Xenomorph to be a map-mobility Killer in a mode built on enormous maps. The tunnel network is the fastest rotation tool in 2v8, the exit Haste means a tunnel arrival is an opening rather than a tell, and the turret counterplay is deliberately weaker here because eight Survivors generate far more turrets than four ever could. Pair the Xenomorph with a second mobile Killer and neither of you has to walk; pair it with Trapper and you end up doing all the work.
What is the Class system and how do Skills work?
2v8 replaces perks with Classes. There are 5 Survivor Classes and 4 Killer Classes, and each Class hands you a fixed set of 3 Skills — you cannot mix and match. The system was introduced in Patch 8.1.0 and now totals 40 Skills across the mode, because every Killer also carries a unique Innate Skill that does not change when you switch Class. That Innate Skill is effectively their Power.
The Skill slots are fixed too. Survivors get a Reveal Skill, a Team Skill and an Unlockable Skill; Killers get an Innate Skill, a Team Skill and a Reveal Skill. On the Survivor side, up to four players can share a Class. On the Killer side, as noted, both Killers must pick different Classes.
The four Killer Classes:
- Brute. Bloody Rampage gives +25% break speed, and the highlighted Generator explodes and applies -5% Hinder for 12 seconds on a 60-second cooldown. Relentless Pursuit extends your reach by 8 metres.
- Enforcer. Deadly Mark grants +3% Haste against injured Survivors; Enforcer's Mark lasts 45 seconds, revealing the target for 1 second every 8 seconds; and a successful down gives your ally +60% lunge for 15 seconds. Remote Revelation adds 4 seconds.
- Fearmonger. Separation Anxiety gives +5% Haste while unseen, and two Survivors within 12 metres of each other scream, revealing themselves to your teammate for 2 seconds. Haunting Presence adds 4 seconds.
- Shadow. Silent Strike grants Undetectable for 60 seconds after caging a Survivor, plus +5% Haste and -25% cooldown when within 32 metres of the other Killer. Detect Prey adds 4 seconds.
The five Survivor Classes are Escapist, Guide, Medic, Scout and Torchbearer. Two of them carry most of the load. The Escapist (internally the Runner) has a 12-metre Sprint Radius on a 30-second charge, Silent Rush for +50% Haste for 3 seconds with 20 seconds of Exhausted, suppressed rushed-action noise for 8 seconds, and Self-Sufficient for a 70% self-heal after your first Cage. The Guide (internally the Mechanic) reveals the four most tightly clustered Generators plus any unfinished Generator within 32 metres, can Trap a Generator on a 90-second charge for a 120-second trap, and opens Exit Gates 15% faster.
Patch 10.1.2 also gave the Guide Class a base-kit addition: hitting a Skill Check with a Killer within 24 metres reveals that Killer's Aura for 5 seconds. Default Uncommon items were set per Class too — First Aid Kit for Medic, Dull Key for Scout, Artisan's Fog Vial for Escapist, and Toolbox for Guide.
Why do Generators feel so slow in 2v8?
This is the single most common complaint in the mode, and the numbers back it up rather than refute it.
Survivors must repair 8 Generators out of 13 on the map, and each one requires 70 Charges instead of the standard 80-Charge-per-90-second framing players are used to. Damaged Generators regress at 200%, double the 1v4 rate. Killers see the Aura of any Generator being repaired within 64 metres, and that range becomes unlimited when two or more Survivors are working on the same one.
Then there is the comeback mechanic most players never read: repair speed is reduced by 5% for every completed Generator and increased by 2.5% for every Cage State a Survivor has suffered. In other words, the closer Survivors get to finishing, the slower they repair — and the more the Killers hook, the faster the remaining Survivors work. That is deliberate, and it is why a 2v8 match that looks lost at four gens often swings.
One experienced player summarised the structural problem bluntly in a thread about the mode's pacing: "for 8 survivors it's 8 gens." Eight people splitting eight Generators is not eight times the progress — it is the same objective count as a four-player match scaled to twice the population, on a map more than twice the size. Add the -5% per-completion penalty and the maths stops being mysterious.

What else is different from standard Dead by Daylight?
A condensed list of the rules that break 1v4 habits:
- Cages of Corruption replace Hooks. A Cage State lasts 60 seconds, for 120 seconds total across both states.
- Anti-camp is built in. The meter fills within 20 metres over 15 charges, pauses for 30 seconds after activating, and grants +15% uncage speed.
- There are 3 Exit Gates, and 3 Hatches spawn once two Survivors remain.
- Mending takes 7 seconds on yourself and 5 seconds on someone else. Pallet reset is 3 seconds.
- Emblems are hidden and Grade progress does not advance. Do not grind 2v8 expecting rank movement.
- Up to two Survivor Bots can fill a lobby, and a Killer who disconnects is replaced by a bot — but a second Killer disconnect ends the match.
- Downed Survivors can self-recover at 70% rather than being permanently slugged.
The Revealed Status Effect is also base-kit and fires more often than newer players expect: during a chase it lasts 5 seconds or until the other Killer comes within 16 metres; damaging a Generator reveals Survivors within 20 metres for 5 seconds; and completing a Generator reveals every uncaged Survivor for 5 seconds.
Is 2v8 worth playing this iteration?
Yes, with one caveat: Killer queue times. Across the first 72 hours of V9, Killer queues of 40 minutes and longer were being reported repeatedly. The explanation players converged on is that queues are server-based and being on an older build splits you from everyone who restarted onto the new patch — so if you are waiting far longer than your friends, fully restart the client before you assume the mode is dead.
There is also a known softlock in circulation where players get stuck on rocks on certain layouts. Treat it as a live bug rather than a you problem, and expect a follow-up bugfix patch during the window.
For Survivors, queues are effectively instant and the mode is the most efficient Bloodpoint faucet in the game right now. For Killers, go in with a partner and a planned Class split, or expect to spend more time in the lobby than in the trial.

Frequently asked questions
When does DBD 2v8 end? 2v8 V9 ends on September 29, 2026, 21 days after its September 8 launch. BHVR has not announced a date for the next iteration.
How many Killers can you play in 2v8? 16. The Xenomorph is new for V9, and The Legion is not available this iteration. Each Killer can only be selected by one player per match.
Why is the Killer queue so long in 2v8? Queue populations are separated from standard mode and, within 2v8, players on different builds can be matched separately. Fully restarting the game after a patch is the practical fix. Survivor queues are near-instant because eight Survivors are needed per match and only two Killers.
How many Generators do you need in 2v8? 8 of the 13 on the map, each at 70 Charges. Repair speed drops 5% per completed Generator and rises 2.5% per Cage State a Survivor has taken.
What does Invoking Salt do? It is a single-use Chest item. Placing it takes 3 seconds, then up to four Survivors can run a 40-second Ritual to unlock their Class's Unlockable Skill without being Hooked, and each participant gains 5% Haste for 5 minutes that decays 1% per minute.
Does 2v8 give Grade progress? No. Emblems are hidden and your Grade does not advance while playing 2v8.
Is there a new map in 2v8 V9? Yes — Nostromo Wreckage, alongside Dvarka Deepwood, bringing the 2v8 pool to 22 supersized maps.
