Open any Dead by Daylight thread about The Skull Merchant and someone will tell you the rework was cancelled. Someone else will say it ships next chapter. Both are guessing. We read the paperwork instead — every Behaviour Interactive developer document that mentions her, in order, plus the live notes for Patch 10.2.0, which went out on 6 October 2026 at 14:33 UTC.
Quick answer: where the Skull Merchant rework actually stands
- It is not cancelled. Behaviour has never published a cancellation, and the most recent on-the-record statement describes an active design direction.
- It has missed its own window. In a developer AMA published on 24 July 2025, Behaviour said it was "looking like sometime in 2026 (we're hoping early 2026)". That statement is now 441 days old, and 2026 is almost over.
- It was not in Patch 10.2.0. She is not mentioned once in the 10.2.0 PTB notes (15 September 2026) or the live Mid-Chapter notes (6 October 2026). Not in Content, not in Bug Fixes.
- The design is already public. Two Design Previews, from 24 March 2025 and 29 April 2025, describe the replacement power: five Stealth Drones, a shoulder-mounted Drone Buddy, an EMP dart and a global "Red Light, Green Light" detection ability.
- She has been changed — just not reworked. Her last balance pass was Patch 9.3.0 in November 2025, a straight numbers buff, corrected in 9.3.2.

Is the Skull Merchant rework cancelled?
No — and the reason people think it is comes down to silence rather than a statement.
Behaviour first signalled it on 20 March 2025, teasing that "we'll give you a first look at our vision for the future of The Skull Merchant". Four days later the first full Design Preview arrived, then a more detailed second one a month after that, then an AMA answer with a timeline — and then nothing. No cancellation, no update, and no appearance in any patch note since.
That is the whole basis for the rumour. Absence of news is not news, but after eighteen months it is a fair thing to be annoyed about. For where she sits among everyone else right now, our DBD killer tier list has the current picture.
What BHVR actually promised, and when
This is the complete first-party paper trail, in publication order:
- 20 March 2025 — Design Preview on future plans. Teases a Skull Merchant preview "in the coming days".
- 24 March 2025 — Design Preview, The Skull Merchant. The first full rework spec.
- 29 April 2025 — Design Preview, The Skull Merchant Part 2. A revised spec responding to feedback.
- 24 July 2025 — Reddit AMA recap. The only statement with a date attached.
- 25 November 2025 — Patch 9.3.0. A numbers buff, not the rework.
- 9 December 2025 — Patch 9.3.2. A small correction to that buff.
- 6 October 2026 — Patch 10.2.0 Mid-Chapter. Zero mentions.
The AMA answer is the one that matters, and it is worth quoting in full rather than paraphrasing:
"Q: Can you give us an update on the Skull Merchant rework? A: Following the Design Previews we did, we got a lot of good feedback on which parts were liked, which parts were disliked, as well as new ideas. We've taken all this feedback and have come up with a direction we're happy with. What I can say is we're looking to retain the trap playstyle, remove the passive lethality, and introduce a new friend (The Buddy Drone). It's also worth pointing out that we're working out where exactly it'll fit on the timeline, which at this time is looking like sometime in 2026 (we're hoping early 2026, but it may be later depending on bandwidth from the different teams). Keep an eye out for future communications! -Jeff"
Three things there are load-bearing. The direction is settled, not still being debated. The Buddy Drone from the second preview survived the feedback round. And the timeline was always hedged on team bandwidth — which is exactly what appears to have happened.
Why is the Skull Merchant being reworked at all?
This is the single biggest misconception, and it showed up immediately in the thread that started this piece. One player put it plainly: "I just don't see how she's broken enough to need a rework. As far as I understand they're not talking about reworking Ghost Face and most people say he's just as bad if not worse than her."
That is a reasonable read and still the wrong frame. Behaviour never said she was too strong or too weak. The stated goals in the March 2025 Design Preview were to "strike a balance between being fun to play as and against", to "preserve the intel focus of her kit", and to "move away from a passive power with limited player interactions and embrace a more active playstyle".
The complaint is passivity, not power level. A Drone that scans someone while the Killer is across the map is lethality the Killer did not earn and the Survivor could not meaningfully fight. No buff or nerf fixes that, which is why it needs a rework rather than a patch note — and why Ghost Face, widely considered weak but not structurally boring to face, is not on the list.
What the rework actually changes
Pulling both Design Previews together, here is the shape of the new power as Behaviour described it.
Drones become two things. The second preview splits them into five deployable Stealth Drones plus a single Drone Buddy that hovers over her shoulder. Behaviour added a clarifying note: "This is not a separate AI-controlled entity."
Drones move. Deployed Drones travel — the first preview states they "move slightly faster than her base movement speed" — and each carries its own Power resource rather than drawing from a shared pool.
She gets a dash. Drone Propulsion launches her along a Drone's path, described in exactly the register you would expect: "Put simply: Stealth Drone go brr." In the first version a hit caused a Survivor to "lose a health state"; the second walked that back to "Drone Propulsion only injures – not downs – Survivors". The Drone is destroyed on impact either way.
Claw Traps change job. In the revised spec, any Survivor hit by Drone Propulsion is "tagged and tracked with a Claw Trap" which "inflicts the Broken status effect", removable with a held interaction.
The down comes from the Buddy. Its EMP dart is described as "short-to-mid range" with a "small AOE", downing Claw-Trapped Survivors — and, critically, it "does not hurt Survivors if they are not tracked with a Claw Trap". That is what replaces passive lethality: two deliberate, aimed actions instead of a scan line doing the work.
A global detection layer replaces guesswork. Both previews describe a Global Detection Power, working-titled "Red Light, Green Light", that gives a map-wide warning and then reveals Survivors on her Radar. The first version only caught sprinting; the revised version catches running or walking, with crouching, standing still and lockers as the counters.
Scan lines came back, partially. The first preview removed them and made detection zones invisible. The feedback round reversed that: "Stealth Drone scan lines are now visible, but will not extend entirely down to the ground, providing a visual indicator for Survivors to crouch-walk as a counter action."
The first preview also deleted a list of current mechanics outright — "Hindered, Haste, Lock On, Claw Trap" — before the second brought Claw Traps back in a new role. Treat the second preview as the current direction; the AMA confirms the Buddy Drone made the cut.
What has actually changed for her since the previews
She has not been ignored — she has been tuned twice, and both passes are in the official notes.
Patch 9.3.0, live 25 November 2025:
- Drone Rotation speed increased to 105 degrees per second, up from 95
- Hindered from a scan increased to 10 percent, up from 8
- Deploy Drone cooldown reduced to 7 seconds, down from 10
- Undetectable after deploying a Drone reduced to 6 seconds, down from 8
- Fast-vault immunity to Scan Lines removed
- Standing under a Drone now grants 1 Lock On per 2.5 seconds instead of instantly
- Drone Killer detection range reduced, now rising only on direct collision with her
Behaviour's own dev note on that pass is unusually blunt: "Skull Merchant has dropped fairly significantly in terms of Kill Rate and lethality. These buffs aim to make her drones a bigger threat and bring up her a little bit."
Patch 9.3.2, live 9 December 2025, corrected the Undetectable part:
- Undetectable duration returned to 8 seconds, up from 6
- Undetectable decoupled from deploying a Drone, and now triggers on recalling one instead
That is the last gameplay change she has received. Nothing in 9.4.0, 9.5.0, 9.6.0, 10.0.0, 10.1.0 or 10.2.0 touches her kit. Every later mention is cosmetic or a bug fix: Patch 9.6.0 on 28 April 2026 added new Power icons for her Deploy Drone, Rotate and Recall actions, and Patch 10.1.0 fixed Drone placement being disabled on some elevated structures.
The 10 percent Hindered figure is a reversal: Patch 8.3.0 had cut it from 10 to 8 in the same pass that removed her second Scan Line and deleted Stealth Mode. That earlier pass is why veterans describe her the way one commenter did: "She used to have 2 scan lines, they used to be invisible if the drone hasn't scanned anyone recently... She's not as awful as a lot of people seem to think, but she's a fraction of what she used to be."
Her live kit in Patch 10.2.0, and a documentation warning
If you are playing her today, this is what you are using. Her power is Eyes in the Sky, and the official character page describes it like this:
"The Skull Merchant can position several Drones around the Map. When a Drone is placed, it quickly enters Active Mode and casts a Detection Zone. While inside of this Detection Zone, you will be Undetectable. When a Survivor enters a Detection Zone, the Drone will gradually begin to Lock-On to them. When a Survivor reaches full Lock-On, their location will be revealed through Killer Instinct. They will also become Exposed."
Here is the warning. That description is the Chapter 27 launch text and it has not been maintained. It still frames Drones as entering "Active Mode" after placement, a holdover from the Stealth Mode era that Patch 8.3.0 removed — Drones are now simply always active. The community wikis are not much better; the largest changelog we checked stops at Patch 8.3.2 and never records the November 2025 buff at all. So when someone quotes a Skull Merchant number at you, check which year it came from. The patch notes are the only reliably current source, and our Patch 10.2.0 breakdown and 10.2.0 perk changes cover what is actually live this month.
Two current details worth having. Her terror radius is 24 metres, cut from 32 in Patch 8.6.0 alongside The Pig and Ghost Face. And she remains permanently discounted at 4,500 Iridescent Shards or 250 Auric Cells, so trying her before the rework lands costs very little; our full killer roster lists everyone currently playable.
Should you learn her now or wait?
Learn her now, with clear eyes. The case for waiting is real — the rework replaces her power wholesale, so Drone placement instincts and Lock On timing become obsolete the day it ships. The case for playing is stronger: the rework has already slipped past Behaviour's own hoped-for window by most of a year with no revised date, her perks are unaffected either way, and the half-price Shard cost makes the experiment cheap. Our best killer perks tier list is the faster path if perks are what you actually want out of her.
One live gripe is worth taking seriously, because it matches the documentation. As one player put it: "It takes 3 scans for the trap to do anything other than ping your location... the trap basically not doing anything till the third scan when they can be avoided pretty easily is my main gripe." That is the exact passivity problem Behaviour named in March 2025 — a strange kind of reassurance that the right thing is being fixed.
FAQ
Is the Skull Merchant rework cancelled? No. Behaviour has never published a cancellation. The most recent on-the-record statement, from the AMA recap of 24 July 2025, describes a settled design direction and an expected 2026 window. What has happened is silence, not cancellation.
When is the Skull Merchant rework coming out? There is no confirmed release date. The only date given is "sometime in 2026 (we're hoping early 2026, but it may be later depending on bandwidth from the different teams)", published 24 July 2025. That window has not been met or publicly revised.
Was the Skull Merchant changed in Patch 10.2.0? No. She is not mentioned in the 10.2.0 PTB notes from 15 September 2026 or the Mid-Chapter notes from 6 October 2026, in any section.
What is the Drone Buddy? A single Drone hovering over her shoulder, introduced in the second Design Preview on 29 April 2025 and confirmed in the July 2025 AMA. It fires a short-to-mid-range EMP dart that downs Survivors already tagged with a Claw Trap, and does nothing to those who are not. Behaviour notes it is "not a separate AI-controlled entity".
Why is the Skull Merchant being reworked if she is already weak? Because the stated problem is passivity, not strength. Behaviour's March 2025 goals were to "move away from a passive power with limited player interactions and embrace a more active playstyle" while preserving the intel focus of her kit.
What was her last actual balance change? Patch 9.3.0 on 25 November 2025 — a buff to Drone rotation speed, Hindered strength and deploy cooldown — corrected by Patch 9.3.2 on 9 December 2025, which restored her Undetectable duration to 8 seconds and moved the trigger to recalling a Drone.
