Quick Answer: A Fallout 76 Commando build in November 2026 no longer uses Commando cards. Bethesda renamed and reworked them in Patch 1.7.20.12: Commando is now Center Masochist (+75% ranged damage to the torso at rank 3), Expert Commando is Fast Fighter, and Master Commando is Number Cruncher (+2% damage per point of AP cost, about +32% on The Fixer). Build Perception around those three plus Tank Killer (ignore 40% armor) and Ground Pounder, run Better Criticals (+100% VATS crit damage) and Critical Savvy in Luck, and fire The Fixer, a Handmade Rifle or an Assault Rifle on full auto. Applies to Season 26 "Beware the Blood Moon!" and game version 1.7.27.11 (October 20, 2026).
Updated November 3, 2026: this guide was rewritten for the current perk system. The September version listed the old Commando, Expert Commando and Master Commando cards, which no longer exist in the game.
What Happened to the Commando Perks in Fallout 76?
If you open the Perception tree looking for Commando, you will not find it. Bethesda's official Gone Fission release notes for Patch 1.7.20.12 (Season 21) list the change under "Renamed Perks":
- Commando became Center Masochist
- Commando Expert became Fast Fighter
- Commando Master became Number Cruncher
They were not just renamed. The old cards gave automatic rifles flat damage. The new ones reward how you shoot: Center Masochist pays for torso hits with any ranged weapon, Number Cruncher pays for weapons with a high AP cost, and Fast Fighter turns movement speed into reload speed. You can read the full transcript of the official 1.7.20.12 patch notes on fallout.wiki.
The same patch changed the cards a commando leans on most. Adrenaline dropped to a single rank, Tormentor moved to Perception, and the Handmade, Assault Rifle, Combat Rifle and The Fixer stopped getting an AP cost reduction from automatic receivers. The follow-up Patch 1.7.21.25 then cut Tank Killer to two ranks and made it work with every ranged weapon. Bethesda summed up the goal in its C.A.M.P. Revamp combat release notes: "we've seen a significant improvement in the variety of ranged weapons being used, fewer difficulty spikes in the early to mid-game experience, and increased build diversity amongst the player base."
So "commando" now describes a playstyle, not a card set: an automatic rifle, torso hits, VATS crits and constant AP. None of the new cards checks whether your rifle is automatic. Center Masochist, Fast Fighter and Number Cruncher work on semi-auto rifles too, and the automatic receiver is simply the fire mode this build is designed around. That playstyle is still one of the strongest in the game.
Four hard numbers frame the build:
- +75% ranged torso damage from Center Masochist rank 3.
- 40% of enemy armor ignored by Tank Killer rank 2.
- +32% damage from Number Cruncher on a 16 AP weapon like The Fixer or the Handmade Rifle.
- +100% VATS critical damage from Better Criticals rank 3.
What Is the Best SPECIAL Spread for a Commando Build?
This spread works for full health and Ghoul commandos at level 50 and above. Bloodied players move points out of Endurance and into Strength for carry weight.
| SPECIAL | Points | Main use |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 4 | Carry weight and utility cards |
| Perception | 15 | The full damage core (table below) |
| Endurance | 4 | Starched Genes and survivability |
| Charisma | 3 | Tenderizer or a team card |
| Intelligence | 4 | Repair and crafting cards, or Science Monster as a Ghoul |
| Agility | 12 | AP regeneration, Gun Fu, Adrenaline, stealth cards |
| Luck | 14 | The VATS critical loop |
That totals 56, the normal cap at level 50 before Legendary Perk SPECIAL boosts. Since Patch 1.7.18.22 you no longer need Concentrated Fire to target limbs in VATS. Any character with at least 5 Perception gets limb targeting automatically.
Which Perk Cards Does a Commando Build Use in 2026?
Card costs and effects below come from the current perk pages on fallout.wiki.
Perception: the damage core
| Perk | Rank | Points | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Center Masochist | 3 | 3 | +75% ranged damage when attacking the torso |
| Number Cruncher | 1 | 3 | +2% weapon damage per point of AP cost |
| Tank Killer | 2 | 2 | Ranged weapons ignore 40% armor |
| Ground Pounder | 3 | 3 | Small guns reload 30% faster, 45% more hip fire accuracy |
| Fast Fighter | 1 | 2 | Your movement speed bonus also applies to reload speed |
| Tormentor | 1 | 2 | +20% damage per crippled limb on the target |
Center Masochist is the biggest damage card in the build. In VATS, keep the torso selected. Switching to the head drops the bonus.
Number Cruncher scales with AP cost, and because automatic receivers no longer lower AP cost on the main commando rifles, the bonus holds when you go full auto. Per the fallout.wiki infoboxes, The Fixer and the Handmade Rifle list 16 AP and the Assault Rifle lists 17, so the card is worth roughly +32% to +34%.
Fast Fighter only works with an active movement speed bonus. The Speed Demon mutation and The Fixer's sneaking speed both count, so it is a good fit here. Without a speed source, swap its 2 points for Concentrated Fire.
VATS-heavy players can trade Ground Pounder for Concentrated Fire rank 3. It adds hit chance and up to +3% damage per consecutive shot on the same body part, stacking for 20 shots.
Agility: your AP engine
| Perk | Rank | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Action Boy / Action Girl | 3 | AP regenerates 45% faster |
| Gun Fu | 3 | VATS swaps targets on kill, +90% damage up to 3 targets |
| Adrenaline | 1 | +10% damage per kill on a Kill Streak, up to 10 stacks (+100%) for 30 seconds |
| Evasive | 1 | Chance to evade attacks based on Agility (no Power Armor) |
Adrenaline is now one rank instead of five, and its stacks refresh with every kill. In Daily Ops and crowded public events it can climb to the full +100%, which makes its 2 points some of the best value in the build. Stealth players add Covert Operative rank 3 (ranged sneak attacks deal 2.5x damage) and Sneak.
Luck: the VATS critical loop
| Perk | Rank | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Better Criticals | 3 | VATS criticals deal +100% damage |
| Critical Savvy | 3 | Critical hits only consume 55% of your critical meter |
| Four Leaf Clover | 1 | VATS misses feed the critical meter, scaled by Luck |
| Class Freak | 3 | Negative mutation effects reduced by 75% |
Four Leaf Clover was cut to a single rank in Patch 1.7.16.13, and it now fills the meter from misses, not hits. With Critical Savvy keeping 45% of the meter after each crit, you crit far more often in long fights.
Endurance, Charisma and Strength
- Starched Genes (Endurance, 1 rank): you never mutate from rads and RadAway never removes your mutations. It moved from Luck to Endurance in Patch 1.7.16.13.
- Tenderizer (Charisma, 2 points): every attack makes the target take 0.1% more damage, stacking up to +100% across your whole team. It is far better in groups than solo.
- Skip Bullet Storm. It gives up to 9% damage per 30 rounds fired, but stacks reset when you reload, and The Fixer's base magazine holds 20 rounds, so you rarely earn a single stack. Our Fallout 76 SMG build guide runs the same reload math for submachine guns.
What Is the Best Commando Weapon in Fallout 76?
All three rifles below can be built automatic or semi-auto. The reworked perks apply either way, but this build runs them on full auto, so craft an automatic receiver for each. Built semi-auto with a scope, the same rifles suit a long-range rifleman build around Down Ranger instead.
| Weapon | Max base damage | Ammo | Magazine | AP cost | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Fixer | 103 (level 50) | .45 Round | 20 | 16 | 5.0 |
| Handmade Rifle | 84 (level 45) | 5.56 Round | 20 | 16 | 8.0 |
| Assault Rifle | 112 (level 50) | 5.56 Round | 20 | 17 | 8.0 |
Stats are the level-scaled base values from the fallout.wiki infoboxes, before receivers, magazines and legendary mods.
The Fixer is still the default commando pick. It is a unique Combat Rifle whose hidden mod adds stealth and faster movement while sneaking. Older guides also promise a hidden +20% damage bonus. That is gone: the Gone Fission notes say The Fixer "no-longer has an additional 20% damage bonus over the Combat Rifle," and Bethesda raised its base damage and its base critical damage multiplier (2.0 to 2.75) instead. It spawns with a semi-auto Calibrated receiver, so swap it at a Weapons Workbench. The plan is a possible reward from Event: Encryptid, but it will not drop until you finish The Lowe-Down. Once you know the plan, legendary Fixers can come from the Purveyor, event rewards and Daily Ops.
The Handmade Rifle is the budget option. It deals less base damage than The Fixer, weighs more and has no stealth bonus, but any legendary Handmade with a good first star is a solid stopgap while you hunt for a Fixer.
The Assault Rifle has the highest base damage of the three and the highest AP cost, which gives Number Cruncher a little more to work with. It is heavier and has no stealth perks.
Best mods for an automatic Fixer
The Fixer shares its mod list with the Combat Rifle, and its default kit is already close to ideal. Per the fallout.wiki mod tables:
| Slot | Mod | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Receiver | Powerful automatic receiver | "Improved automatic fire, damage" |
| Barrel | Stabilized short barrel (default) | Better recoil and range |
| Stock | Aligned Stock (default) | Better recoil and hip fire accuracy |
| Magazine | Perforating magazine (default) or Large Magazine | Armor penetration, or 10 more rounds |
| Muzzle | Suppressor (default) | Keeps sneak attacks and Mister Sandman working |
Use the Tweaked automatic receiver instead if you play almost entirely in VATS, since it trades the extra damage for better critical shot damage. Receivers change AP cost and damage, so check the Number Cruncher bonus on the workbench stats screen after you swap.
Since The Slasher update on September 15, 2026, unique weapons such as The Fixer can have their legendary mods replaced at a workbench. Replacing a mod on a unique costs 10x the normal scrip price, which is 500 Legendary Scrip for 1 to 3 star mods. Our legendary farming guide covers where to farm the modules and scrip.
Which Legendary Effects Should a Commando Weapon Have?
Automatic rifles land a lot of hits, so per-hit effects build up fast.
- Furious (1 star): +5% damage per Onslaught stack and nine extra maximum stacks. Stacks grow while you keep landing hits, which suits a rifle firing several rounds per second.
- Instigating (1 star): +50% damage against targets above 60% health. Pick it over Furious if you mostly one-shot trash mobs, because Furious needs time to build stacks and Instigating pays out on the first hit. On bosses and Daily Ops elites, Furious wins.
- Bloodied (1 star): peak bonus raised from 95% to 130% in Patch 1.7.20.12. Only take it on a low health build.
- Conductor's (4 star): critical hits restore 10 HP and AP instantly, plus 100 more over five seconds, for you and teammates within 100 feet. It pairs directly with the critical loop above.

What Changes for a Ghoul Commando?
Ghouls, added in The Ghoul Within update, use the same rifles and the same Perception core. They also unlock Ghoul-only cards and trade hunger and thirst for the Feral meter.
| Ghoul perk | SPECIAL | Unlocks at | Max rank effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild West Hands | Luck | Level 65 | 36% chance to instantly reload your entire magazine when empty |
| Eye of the Hunter | Perception | Level 85 | +30% VATS accuracy against targets 30 feet or more away |
| Science Monster | Intelligence | Level 100 | With Glow, +15% damage for 10 seconds after being hit |
| Jaguar Speed | Agility | Level 60 | Sprint 20% faster when your Glow is high |
Ghoul swaps for the loadout above: put Wild West Hands 3 into the spare Luck points, Science Monster 3 into Intelligence, and, if you want Eye of the Hunter 3, drop Fast Fighter and Tormentor from Perception to free the points.
Wild West Hands is the standout. A 20-round rifle empties fast, and an instant reload on roughly a third of your empty magazines cuts the downtime between bursts.
Skip Jaguar Speed if you run Speed Demon. Movement speed is capped at 120%, and Speed Demon alone hits that cap, so the card does nothing.
Never let the Feral meter reach 0%. At 0% Feral you get a melee damage bonus, but your hip fire and VATS accuracy drop by 300%, which shuts a commando build down. Keep chems in your inventory and top the meter up before long fights.
Which Mutations and Armor Should a Commando Use?
| Mutation | Positive | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Speed Demon | +20% movement and reload speed | Faster hunger and thirst (faster Feral as a Ghoul) |
| Eagle Eyes | +25% critical damage, +4 Perception | -4 Strength |
| Adrenal Reaction | +5% damage per kill | Lower max HP |
Speed Demon gives the highest movement speed bonus in the game, so it is also the best source for Fast Fighter. Run Class Freak 3 to cut the downsides by 75%, and use Starched Genes so RadAway does not strip them. Our Fallout 76 mutations guide covers how to get each one.
For armor, Secret Service remains the best non-Power Armor set. The plans come from Regs at Vault 79 for Gold Bullion. A full health human runs Overeater's or Vanguard's on it. Ghouls should skip Overeater's, because they have no hunger or thirst bars for it to read. See our best armor guide for the full set comparison.
FAQ
Is Commando still a perk in Fallout 76? No. Patch 1.7.20.12 renamed Commando, Commando Expert and Commando Master to Center Masochist, Fast Fighter and Number Cruncher, and gave them new effects that work with any ranged weapon, automatic or not.
What replaced the Commando perk in Fallout 76? Center Masochist, a 3-rank Perception card that adds +25%, +50% or +75% ranged damage when you hit an enemy's torso.
Is a Commando build still good in 2026? Yes. Center Masochist, Number Cruncher and Tank Killer give an automatic rifle a large damage bonus, and Adrenaline can reach +100% during busy fights. The playstyle is just built around torso hits and AP cost now, not flat rifle damage.
What is the best gun for a Commando build? The Fixer with an automatic receiver. It has built-in stealth bonuses, a high critical damage multiplier and a 16 AP cost that suits Number Cruncher. The Assault Rifle has higher base damage if you do not play stealth.
Does Center Masochist work in VATS? Yes, as long as you target the torso. Pick the head or a limb and you lose the bonus for those shots.
Do I still need Concentrated Fire? Not to target limbs. Since Patch 1.7.18.22, 5 Perception unlocks limb targeting in VATS. Concentrated Fire now only adds accuracy and stacking damage on one body part.
The Bottom Line
The Fallout 76 Commando build survived the perk rework, but almost every older guide still lists cards that are gone. In Season 26, build Perception around Center Masochist, Number Cruncher and Tank Killer, keep AP flowing with Action Boy or Action Girl and Gun Fu, and let Better Criticals and Critical Savvy run the VATS loop. Put an automatic receiver on The Fixer, aim center mass, and replace its legendary mods at a workbench until you have Furious or Instigating.
