Quick answer (updated November 4, 2026): Rockstar has confirmed that the GTA 6 preload requires up to 212 GB, depending on your device. Digital preload now starts November 10, not November 12. The announcement does not give separate exact PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S sizes. Clear around 250 GB as a planning buffer, not a guaranteed installation requirement. At 100 Mbps, downloading 212 GB takes about 4 hours 43 minutes before network overhead. The game still launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
This replaces the earlier reported 210 GB PS5 figure on this page. The important change is not just two extra gigabytes: there is now an official number, and digital buyers have two fewer days to finish clearing their storage. Below is what Rockstar actually confirmed, what remains unknown, and how to prepare without buying an SSD you do not need.
How many GB is GTA 6 officially?
Up to 212 GB for the preload, depending on your device. In its November 3 preload announcement, Rockstar says:
“The pre-load file will require up to 212 GB depending on your device, so make sure you've got ample space to begin pre-loading as soon as possible.” — Rockstar Games, Newswire
That wording matters. It is an upper figure for the preload, not a promise that every console downloads exactly 212 GB. It also does not tell us the final installed footprint after every launch update. Avoid treating download size, reserved installation space and eventual SSD usage as interchangeable numbers.
| Question | Current answer |

All announcement details above come from Rockstar's Newswire. The free-space target is our advice, not a Rockstar specification.
What happened to the reported 210 GB PS5 download?
The earlier 210 GB number came from PlayStation Game Size on October 27. Insider Gaming reported and corroborated that figure. It was useful advance reporting, but it was not the same thing as an official requirement across all consoles.
The November 3 announcement now takes precedence: use up to 212 GB for planning. This does not prove that a particular PS5 build grew by exactly 2 GB. Rockstar has not published a platform-by-platform comparison with the earlier store metadata. A 210 GB PS5 package could still fit inside a cross-device ceiling of 212 GB.
If a screenshot or an older guide says “Rockstar has not confirmed a size,” check its date. That statement is now outdated. Conversely, a headline saying “212 GB on every platform” is more precise than Rockstar's announcement supports. The honest answer sits between those two claims.
Is GTA 6 the same size on Xbox Series S and Series X?
Rockstar has not separated the two Xbox downloads in this announcement. Its “depending on your device” qualifier is a reason to leave room for variation, not permission to invent a smaller Series S package.
Plan against the 212 GB ceiling on both models until your own console displays its actual requirement. Do not buy storage based on an unsourced claim that Series S textures will automatically make the download much smaller. Similarly, do not assume the Ultimate Edition adds a specific number of gigabytes; the announcement gives no edition-specific storage breakdown.
For the 512 GB Series S, capacity matters more than a small difference between downloads. Our GTA 6 Xbox Series S guide covers that model separately. The practical decision is whether your current free space leaves comfortable headroom after installation, not whether one rumored package is a few gigabytes smaller.
How much usable storage does each console have?
The capacity printed on a console box is not all available for games. System software, reserved space and formatting reduce it. These are approximate model-specific usable capacities, not free space on your own machine:
| Console model | Advertised capacity | Approximate usable storage | 212 GB as a share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch PS5 | 825 GB | 667 GB | 32% |
| PS5 Slim, 1 TB model | 1 TB | 842 GB | 25% |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | 1.89 TB | 11% |
| Xbox Series S, 512 GB model | 512 GB | 364 GB | 58% |
| Xbox Series X, 1 TB model | 1 TB | 802 GB | 26% |
Capacity references: PS5 storage reporting, PS5 Pro hands-on review, and Xbox storage guidance. Percentages are our calculations using the 212 GB ceiling, not confirmed installed sizes.
A launch PS5 with approximately 450 GB already used has about 217 GB left. That is only 5 GB above the announced preload ceiling. It is not a comfortable buffer for an installation process or later update. On the 512 GB Series S, 212 GB is roughly 58% of usable capacity; that percentage does not apply to a 1 TB Series S.
How do you check your actual free space?
On PS5, open Settings → Storage and inspect Console Storage or the M.2 drive you intend to use. On Xbox, open Settings → System → Storage devices and select the intended drive. Check the destination rather than adding together spare space across unrelated drives: one install needs an appropriate destination with enough room.
The console's current free-space figure is more useful than any generic capacity table. Write it down before deleting anything, then check again after your cleanup. Also confirm that a large download already queued in the background will not consume the space you just cleared.
Should you clear 212 GB or 250 GB?
Aim for around 250 GB if you can. That gives roughly 38 GB above the published preload ceiling. It is a convenient planning buffer, not a guarantee that every installation, update or future patch will fit.
Rockstar has not specified a separate day-one patch size in the cited announcement. We therefore cannot promise that 250 GB is permanently sufficient, or tell you to reserve a made-up additional 50 GB. Once preload opens, follow your console's actual space requirement if it asks for more.
If you have 220 GB free, start by moving one game you are not playing rather than immediately buying hardware. If you already have 350 GB free on a suitable drive, buying an SSD solely for this preload probably solves no immediate problem. Storage purchases make more sense when you repeatedly juggle several large games, not because a headline presents a recommended buffer as mandatory hardware.
How do you free space without losing saves?
Start with large installations you can move or reinstall. Do not delete saved-game data as part of routine storage cleanup. Games, saves and captured videos are different categories, and they should be handled separately.
- Review your biggest installed games. Remove games you are finished with, or optional content packs where the game explicitly lets you manage them separately.
- Move compatible older games to USB storage. PS4 games can run from suitable USB extended storage on PS5. On Xbox, check each game's storage requirements before moving it.
- Back up captures you want to keep. Delete expendable videos and screenshots only after checking the backup.
- Check saves independently. Confirm your platform's backup or synchronization status before changing anything related to saves. Do not assume everyone has the same subscription or cloud-save setup.
- Recheck the target drive. Stop when you have a sensible buffer; deleting extra games does not improve the download itself.
If you are keeping GTA Online installed while waiting, include its existing space in your plan. Uninstalling a game is not a transfer of progress to GTA 6, and buying anything for GTA Online does not provide GTA 6 storage, access or progress.
Can GTA 6 run from a USB drive?
Do not plan to play a current-generation console game from a basic USB storage drive. On PS5, Sony's official guidance distinguishes storing PS5 games on USB from playing them: PS5 games must be copied back to compatible fast storage to run. PS4 games can play directly from USB.
For a PS5 expansion, use a compatible M.2 SSD meeting Sony's requirements, including suitable heat dissipation. Check the exact model specifications before purchasing. A cheap external USB SSD and an internal compatible M.2 drive are not interchangeable just because both use the term SSD.
On Xbox Series X/S, the internal drive and officially compatible Storage Expansion Cards are the appropriate options for games requiring the console's fast storage. Microsoft's expansion-card explanation describes running games directly from these cards. Ordinary USB storage remains useful for compatible older games and moving supported content, but do not buy it expecting to play GTA 6 directly from it.
When should your storage be ready for preload?
Have it ready before November 10. The older November 12 digital-preload date has been superseded by Rockstar's new announcement.
Rockstar states midnight local time on November 10 for PS5, and 00:00 GMT on November 10 globally for Xbox Series X/S. The Xbox instant is 7 p.m. EST or 4 p.m. PST on November 9. Follow your store's displayed countdown for your account and region rather than assuming every platform uses the same clock.
The boxed edition is different: Rockstar says code-in-box versions should reach retailers beginning November 12. Its store listing says there is no disc in the box, so it does not remove the download requirement. See our physical-copy explainer for that buying distinction.
Preloading is not early access. The game remains scheduled for November 19, as listed on the official GTA VI site. Getting the files early simply gives you time to download before the game becomes playable.
How long will a 212 GB download take?
About 4 hours 43 minutes at a sustained 100 Mbps. These are best-case transfer calculations using 212 decimal gigabytes and eight bits per byte, without congestion, installation time or network overhead:
| Sustained download speed | Ideal time for 212 GB |
|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 18 hours 51 minutes |
| 50 Mbps | 9 hours 25 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | 4 hours 43 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | 1 hour 34 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | 57 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | 28 minutes |
Use the speed your console actually sustains, not just the maximum advertised by your internet plan. Wi-Fi conditions, household traffic and download-server load can all make the real wait longer. At 100 Mbps, a busy household that halves the available throughput can roughly double the transfer time.
Check data caps too: 212 GB is 21.2% of a decimal 1 TB monthly allowance, before other downloads or updates. Starting during the preload window is more useful than waiting until launch night and hoping the advertised maximum speed holds throughout.
Is there a confirmed GTA 6 PC file size?
No PC storage specification is announced in these sources. Rockstar's current launch page lists PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Do not apply the console preload ceiling to a hypothetical PC release, and do not download files from a site claiming to provide an unofficial PC preload. Our GTA 6 PC release-status guide separates announced platform information from expectations.
What can you do in GTA Online while waiting?
If you are still playing GTA Online, timesaver.gg's GTA 5 Money service relates to that existing game, not GTA 6. Keep the distinction clear when planning your launch-month gaming and storage.
