Quick answer (TLDR): Rockstar has given ratios, not a square-mile figure. The GTA 6 map is about twice the size of GTA 5's and three times RDR2's playable area, and Edge reports its landmass is nearly as large as GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2 combined. Run those ratios through the best available measurements and you get roughly 92 to 108 km² of land (about 36 to 42 sq mi). If Rockstar's 2x counts water, the total is closer to 152 km² (59 sq mi). Those are our scenario estimates, not official numbers.

After years of guesswork, Rockstar has finally put scale on the record. It told press and creators in August that the map doubles GTA 5's, then Edge's October 29 cover feature added the comparison now everywhere: nearly GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2 put together.

What Rockstar still hasn't published is an area. That gap is where the bad numbers live, including some that used to be on this page. Below is every official statement, the measurements behind each comparison, and the math with its assumptions showing.

Correction, October 31: earlier versions of this guide said Rockstar had given no size at all, quoted fan estimates of 118 to 132 sq mi, and used a fan-made illustrated map as the lead image. All three are gone.

How big is the GTA 6 map, officially?

Four statements from Rockstar are on the record. Everything else is an estimate.

Here is Edge's wording, which is the line every outlet has been paraphrasing:

"The map is roughly twice the size of GTAV's; Rockstar says its total landmass, including Vice City and the surrounding areas, is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTAIV, GTAV and RDR2 combined."

— Edge, cover feature published on GamesRadar+

The earlier figures came from TGG's August hands-on at Rockstar North. Kotaku quoted TGG directly: "The map is twice the size of GTA 5's map, three times the size of Red Dead 2's map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos." IGN reported the same numbers.

TGG also passed on an odder one: Vice City and its suburbs are said to be 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings. We can't square that with a map that is only 2x GTA 5 overall, so we wouldn't lean on it until the game is out.

How much bigger is the GTA 6 map than GTA 5?

Rockstar says about twice as big. Turning that into square miles depends on the baseline, and the baseline most articles use is shaky.

The "49 square miles" figure for GTA 5 has circulated since before the game launched, and GTATracker's map comparison notes it has no published method behind it. The best-documented figure is the KeWiS measurement series on GTAForums: 75.84 km² in total, of which 48.15 km² is land and 27.69 km² is water. So about 37% of that measured GTA 5 area is water.

GTA 416.14 km² (6.2 sq mi)8.06 km² (3.1 sq mi)Community measured
RDR2Not published35.9 to 75.1 km² (13.9 to 29 sq mi)Disputed

GTA 6About 152 km² (59 sq mi) if 2x counts waterAbout 92 to 108 km² (36 to 42 sq mi)Our estimate, from Rockstar's ratios

The practical takeaway: doubling the old 49 sq mi figure gives 98 sq mi, and that number has no solid measurement behind it. Rockstar also never said whether its 2x means land or total area, so both columns stay open until someone can measure the finished game.

How many square miles is the GTA 6 map?

Nobody outside Rockstar can say exactly. You can still narrow it down, because Rockstar's three size comparisons check each other. Using land figures only:

MethodCalculationLand estimate
2x GTA 52 × 48.15 km²96.3 km² (37.2 sq mi)
3x RDR2, low figure3 × 35.9 km²107.7 km² (41.6 sq mi)
"Nearly" GTA 4 + GTA 5 + RDR28.06 + 48.15 + 35.9 km²Just under 92.1 km² (35.6 sq mi)
Fan mapping projectIts own reconstructionAbout 125 km² (48.3 sq mi)

The first three land within about 16 km² of each other, so we use 92 to 108 km² as an illustrative range. It's a set of scenarios, not a measurement or a hard floor.

They also point one way on a side argument. RDR2 is often quoted at 29 sq mi (about 75 km²). Three times that is 225 km², well past even the 152 km² you get by doubling GTA 5 with water included. Both of Rockstar's ratios can't easily hold if RDR2 is that big, so the lower RDR2 figure fits better. GTATracker makes a related point: Rockstar's own RDR2 web map frame is only 12.29 by 9.73 km, and the high figure would need almost two thirds of that rectangle to be land.

Two caveats. Rockstar rounds, "roughly" and "nearly" aren't measurements, and it hasn't defined "playable area". Treat this as a range, not a fact.

Is the 125 km² mapping project number wrong?

It's a fan reconstruction, and it may still prove closer than our range. Rockstar's ratios are rounded, while the GTA VI Mapping Project is a community reconstruction built up from footage and screenshots. Its estimate is about 2.6x GTA 5's land, against Rockstar's "twice". GTATracker found that the two "don't produce wildly incompatible scales", and that's fair given the rounding.

The project is also moving fast. It is now co-owned by GTA Wiki, which has set a deadline:

"The final version of the Mapping Project will release sometime in November, ahead of the game's launch."

— u/gtawiki, r/GTA6

Players in that thread were realistic about it: some said the project got plenty wrong, others that it pinned down what it could from limited material. Several also said its outline draws on a leaked map, which Rockstar has never verified. That's why it sits outside our range, and why we leave other leak-based measurements out entirely. We'll update this page with a real measurement once the game is out.

What's actually inside the GTA 6 map?

Six regions, all named by Rockstar. For street-level detail, read our full GTA 6 map guide. Here is how they fit together:

RegionWhat Rockstar has shown
Vice CityThe Miami-style metropolis, officially twice the size of Los Santos
Leonida KeysTropical island chain with beaches and tourist spots
GrassriversEverglades-style wetlands full of wildlife
Port GellhornA faded vacation town of budget motels and shuttered attractions
AmbrosiaSmall-town industrial area with factories and refineries
Mount Kalaga National ParkForested highlands and outdoor recreation country

Those are the same six Rockstar's site lists. Every region name above is confirmed. The exact layout is harder to pin down, because Rockstar hasn't published a full map online. The closest thing is the 36 × 26 in souvenir poster in its $399.99 Vice City Collection, which has a full map of Leonida on the back and ships from November 19.

Does a bigger map mean more to do?

Rockstar's argument is that size is the less interesting number. Edge says as much, calling acreage "an increasingly blunt measure of an open world's ambition", and the studio's specifics point at density:

  • Interiors: head of development Aaron Garbut told Edge the game has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than its predecessors. Our interiors guide covers what you can enter.
  • Hand-built detail: "Every back alley is as densely detailed and interesting as the others," Garbut said. After years of playing it, he says he still finds places he hadn't seen.
  • NPCs: Rockstar art-directed its pedestrians and created around 600,000 animations for them.

The right comparison may be the jump from GTA 5 to GTA 6 in density, not acreage. A map twice as large with an order of magnitude more interiors is a much bigger world to play through than the headline ratio suggests. For a sense of length, one developer's run reached about 80 hours.

How long will it take to cross the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar hasn't given a crossing time, and nobody outside the preview groups can time one yet. Edge did confirm three changes that will make travel feel different from GTA 5:

  • Narrower roads: GTA 5's wide roads have been cut down to what Rob Nelson calls "a more believable size".
  • A longer day: the day-night cycle is substantially extended. When the team tested GTA 5's timings, Nelson told Edge, "everything felt too fast."
  • Public transport: Edge describes fully functioning bus and train systems. Phil Hooker, another head of development, says he has memorized the bus routes.

Together, those changes suggest getting around will feel slower and less arcade-like than in GTA 5, though Rockstar hasn't put a number on it.

What's still unknown about the map?

Three things only the finished game will answer:

  • The real area. No official square-mile or square-kilometer figure exists, so anyone stating one as fact is guessing.
  • What the ratios measure. Rockstar hasn't said whether 2x means land, total area or something closer to "playable space".
  • Whether it's all open at the start. Rockstar hasn't announced an access order, so claims about locked regions are unverified.

That is also the last open question before launch. The preload starts on November 12, and the game lands on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, per Rockstar's store listing. A world this dense isn't small on disk either, so check our GTA 6 file size guide before you clear space.

What should you do before Leonida opens?

Rockstar hasn't confirmed any GTA Online carry-over or a GTA 6 Online date. If you still have goals in Los Santos, the next 19 days are the time to finish them. Our what to unlock before GTA 6 guide ranks them.

FAQ

How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5? About twice the size, according to Rockstar. Edge also reports its landmass is nearly as large as GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2 combined. Rockstar hasn't said whether the 2x figure includes water.

How many square miles is the GTA 6 map? Rockstar hasn't published a number. Our estimate from its ratios is about 36 to 42 sq mi of land, or about 59 sq mi if the 2x comparison includes water. The fan mapping project's figure is about 48 sq mi of land.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than RDR2? Yes. Rockstar told The New York Times and TGG it is three times RDR2's playable area.

Is GTA 6 the biggest Rockstar map ever? Yes, based on Rockstar's own comparisons. It is about twice GTA 5's map and three times RDR2's playable area, and those were the studio's two largest worlds.

Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos? Yes. Rob Nelson told TGG that Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos.

Has Rockstar released an official GTA 6 map? Not online. Rockstar has named six regions and shown them in footage, and the $399.99 Vice City Collection includes a full Leonida map poster that ships from November 19. Fan maps are reconstructions, so don't treat them as official.
