MW4 mastery camos — the Parallax camo shown on a rifle from the Call of Duty NEXT reveal

Modern Warfare 4's Mastery Camos were revealed at Call of Duty: NEXT on August 21, 2026, and for the first time in the series there are nine of them — three each for Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ, all hanging off a single shared per-weapon Camo Track. Three of the nine are "Reforged" versions of camos veterans already recognise — including one Warzone reward that resurrects a name last used as a mastery tier in 2019.

This page is the name list, mode by mode, plus the part almost nobody is writing down: what Activision has actually published versus what is still blank. No invented challenge counts, no fake headshot requirements — just the confirmed roster, the sourcing behind it, and the specific gaps that are still unfilled with two months to go until the October 23, 2026 launch.

Quick answer (TLDR): Modern Warfare 4 has 9 confirmed Mastery Camos across three modes. Multiplayer: Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged. Warzone: Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros. DMZ: Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio. They sit on top of a shared per-weapon Camo Track that progresses no matter which of the three modes you play. A further three Prestige camos (Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter) are reported by a single outlet and are not independently confirmed. Activision has not published unlock requirements, challenge counts, or the base-camo tiers yet. Read on for the full breakdown of each name, what "Reforged" means, and exactly which details are still missing.

Key takeaways

  • 9 confirmed Mastery Camos, split 3 per mode across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.
  • One shared Camo Track per weapon. Progress carries between modes rather than being farmed three separate times.
  • Three "Reforged" camos. Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged are modernised takes on the MWII/MWIII mastery tier; Damascus Reforged revives the Modern Warfare (2019) mastery camo — this time as a Warzone reward, not a Multiplayer one.
  • Six names are brand new to the franchise: Mercurial Drift, Parallax, Empyros, Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio.
  • Unlock requirements are unpublished. No challenge counts, no headshot totals, no base-camo tier names. Anyone quoting numbers today is guessing.
  • Three Prestige camos are single-source and should be treated as rumour until Activision confirms them.

What are MW4 mastery camos, and how many are there?

Mastery Camos are the top of Call of Duty's cosmetic progression ladder: the weapon finishes you only get after clearing every base camo challenge on a gun and then completing a further mastery-tier requirement. They are the series' flex currency — rare precisely because most players stop long before the last tier.

Modern Warfare 4 keeps that structure but changes the shape of it. Instead of one mastery ladder tied to Multiplayer, MW4 splits the top tier three ways, one set per mode:

ModeMastery camosCount

The reveal came out of the Call of Duty: NEXT broadcast on August 21, 2026 — the same show that kicked off the MW4 beta. The camo showcase was captured and written up independently by Insider Gaming and Destructoid, with a third breakdown at FPSHUB. All three trace back to the same upstream source: Activision's own CoD NEXT presentation. We are being explicit about that because it matters for how much weight you should put on the details below — the names are corroborated across outlets, the unlock methods are not published by anyone.

The other structural change is the one that makes nine camos less insane than it sounds. Destructoid describes MW4 as running a "shared camo grind" where "no matter what mode you're playing, you're grinding those camos." In other words, the Camo Track lives on the weapon, not on the mode — so time in DMZ is not wasted progress for your Multiplayer camos. We break the mechanics of that down in our MW4 mastery camo unlock explainer; here we are focused on the roster.

Which mastery camos are in MW4 Multiplayer?

Three, and two of them are deliberate callbacks.

Mercurial Drift. A wholly new name for the franchise — no prior Call of Duty title has shipped a mastery camo under it. The reveal footage shows a liquid-metal treatment, consistent with the "mercurial" naming, but Activision has not published a tier position for it, so do not assume it is the entry-level or the capstone of the three.

Polyatomic Reforged. Polyatomic has been a mastery tier since Modern Warfare II, and callofduty.com's own MWIII camo leveling guide lists it among the four completionist camos (Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, Orion). MW4 reissues it as a "Reforged" variant rather than a straight copy.

Orion Reforged. Same story. Orion was the top mastery camo of MWII and returned in MWIII; here it comes back with the Reforged suffix. Its presence in the Multiplayer column, alongside Polyatomic Reforged, is a strong signal that MW4's Multiplayer ladder is styled after the MWII/MWIII lineage rather than the Black Ops line.

⚠️ What is not confirmed: the order of these three, whether they are sequential tiers or parallel unlocks, and what you have to do to earn any of them.

Which mastery camos are in MW4 Warzone?

This is the column with the surprise in it.

Parallax. New name, and the one Activision led the showcase with — the camo shown in the featured capture at the top of this page, an iridescent shifting finish that reads differently depending on viewing angle.

Damascus Reforged. Damascus is the mastery camo of Modern Warfare (2019), arguably the most recognised completionist finish in the modern series. MW4 brings it back — but notably as a Warzone reward, not a Multiplayer one. That is a genuine break with precedent: the camo that defined 2019's Multiplayer grind is now battle-royale-side.

Empyros. A new name with no franchise history. Nothing has been published about its requirements.

The Warzone placement is consistent with the direction MW4 is taking with the battle royale generally: Warzone integrates MW4 content and seasonal progression from Season 1, and Warzone was included in the beta's second weekend (Aug 28 – Sep 1) with the new Resurgence map Zodiac — a franchise first.

Which mastery camos are in MW4 DMZ?

DMZ, MW4's extraction pillar set in the Hajin exclusion zone, gets its own three:

Chiral. New to the franchise. "Chirality" is the property of an object not being superimposable on its mirror image, which suggests a mirrored or asymmetric design treatment — though that is our reading of the name, not an Activision description.

Ripple Tide. New name, no franchise precedent.

Helio. New name, no franchise precedent.

Worth flagging for expectation management: DMZ is not playable in the August beta. The beta bundled Multiplayer, the Campaign mission "Entrenched" and Warzone; DMZ is launch-only on October 23, 2026. So the DMZ camo track is the one you will have the least information about right up to release day.

What does "Reforged" mean in MW4 camo names?

Three of the nine carry the Reforged suffix: Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged and Damascus Reforged. All three are names players already know from earlier Modern Warfare titles.

Activision has not published a definition of "Reforged." What can be stated factually is the pattern: the suffix appears only on returning camo names, never on the six new ones. The most defensible read is that Reforged marks a re-authored version of a legacy mastery camo — same identity, new material work built for MW4's rendering — rather than a literal re-issue of the old asset.

What "Reforged" does not appear to mean, based on the reveal:

  • It is not a carry-over mechanic. Nothing published says owning Orion in MWII/MWIII grants Orion Reforged in MW4. Any claim that MW3 or BO7 camos transfer is unverified.
  • It is not mode-locked to its original home. Damascus was a 2019 Multiplayer camo; Damascus Reforged sits in the Warzone column.
  • It is not a paid tier. No pricing or store placement has been announced for any of the nine.

The two pre-order Universal camos are a separate thing entirely and should not be confused with the mastery set: Moonlit Pearl unlocks instantly on a digital pre-purchase, and Gilded Ruin is earned through a 5,000-Skull challenge running in Black Ops 7 Season 05 and Warzone, with the first 100,000 finishers receiving an individually serialized 1–100,000 engraved variant. We cover that grind in full in our Gilded Ruin serialized camo guide.

Are there MW4 Prestige mastery camos? (rumoured)

Possibly — but this is the weakest claim on the page and we are labelling it as such.

Insider Gaming's write-up lists a fourth set of three tied to Prestige: Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge and Pyroclast Scatter. That would take the total to twelve, which is why their headline says twelve.

Here is the problem. No second outlet has corroborated the Prestige set. Destructoid's breakdown of the same reveal covers only nine and describes exactly three modes. Insider Gaming's own article text also refers to "the nine camos" in its closing line, which sits awkwardly against its twelve-camo headline.

Verdict: treat the three Pyroclast camos as RUMOURED — single-source, internally inconsistent, and not confirmed by Activision. If they land, they are a Prestige-gated bonus set separate from the mode ladders. We will update this page when a second independent source or an official post confirms them.

What has Activision not published about MW4 camos?

This is the honest inventory, and it is longer than the confirmed list. As of August 22, 2026, none of the following has been published:

DetailStatus
The nine mastery camo names✅ Confirmed (CoD NEXT, Aug 21)
Three camos per mode, three modes✅ Confirmed
Shared per-weapon Camo Track across modes✅ Confirmed
Number of base camos per weapon❌ Not published
Individual camo challenge requirements (headshots, longshots, kill counts)❌ Not published
Weapon-level gating thresholds for each mastery tier❌ Not published
Whether Gold / Platinum / Diamond exist as named MW4 base tiers❌ Not published
Whether MWIII or BO7 camos carry over into MW4❌ Not published (rumour at best)
The three Prestige camos⚠️ Single-source rumour

Insider Gaming was straightforward about the same gap, closing its guide with: "Once we find out how to unlock all the Mastery Camos, we'll update this guide." Nobody has the requirements — including us. Any site publishing exact challenge counts for Mercurial Drift or Chiral today is inventing them.

The next realistic checkpoints are the open beta window (Aug 28 – Sep 1, 2026), where the in-game Camo Track UI may expose base tiers, and the pre-launch content briefings ahead of October 23, 2026.

How do you prepare for the MW4 camo grind now?

You cannot start the mastery grind before launch — MW4's Camo Track does not exist yet. What you can do is remove the friction that historically eats the most time:

  • Bank attachment unlocks, not camo progress. MW4 confirms attachments unlock once and then carry across the whole arsenal — Activision's framing is that you "unlock an attachment once and build out an arsenal." That is the single biggest structural time-saver in the game, and it means early weapon leveling pays into every future gun.
  • Learn Gunny. Gunny is MW4's optional one-input loadout assistant (the Gunsmith remains the manual customisation menu). During a camo grind you rebuild loadouts constantly, so letting Gunny handle the assembly is free minutes back.
  • Understand Apex Attachments. These unlock after fully leveling a supported weapon — another reason weapon level, not camo challenges, is the real gate early on. Our MW4 weapons and Apex Attachments guide covers the system.
  • Pick your mode lane in advance. Because the Camo Track is shared, the smart play is grinding in whichever of the three modes gives you the most weapon time per hour — not the mode whose camo you want most.
  • Don't chase the pre-order camos as a mastery substitute. Moonlit Pearl and Gilded Ruin are Universal camos. They look good on day one but they are not mastery unlocks and they do not touch the Camo Track.

FAQ

How many mastery camos are in MW4? Nine are confirmed: three in Multiplayer (Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged), three in Warzone (Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros) and three in DMZ (Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio). A further three Prestige camos — Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge and Pyroclast Scatter — are reported by one outlet only and are not confirmed, which would make twelve if they are real.

Do I have to grind each mode separately for its camos? No. MW4 uses a shared per-weapon Camo Track. Destructoid describes it as a "shared camo grind" where "no matter what mode you're playing, you're grinding those camos" — so time in DMZ, Warzone or Multiplayer all feeds the same weapon's progression. The mastery camos themselves are still split by mode.

What are the unlock requirements for MW4 mastery camos? They have not been published by Activision. No challenge counts, headshot totals or weapon-level thresholds exist in any official source as of August 22, 2026. Insider Gaming's guide states plainly that it will update "once we find out how to unlock all the Mastery Camos." Treat any site listing exact numbers today as speculation.

Does MW4 still have Gold, Platinum and Diamond camos? Unknown. Only the nine mastery camo names have been revealed — the base and intermediate tier structure, including whether the traditional Gold/Platinum/Diamond names return, is not published yet. The Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged names suggest the MWII/MWIII lineage, but that is an inference, not a confirmation.

Are the pre-order camos the same as mastery camos? No. Moonlit Pearl (instant on digital pre-purchase) and Gilded Ruin (earned via the 5,000-Skull challenge in Black Ops 7 Season 05 and Warzone, serialized 1–100,000 for the first 100,000 finishers) are Universal camos applied across your arsenal. They are unrelated to the Camo Track and do not count as mastery progress.

When will we know how to unlock them? The most likely windows are the open beta (August 28 – September 1, 2026), where the in-game Camo Track interface may expose the tier structure, and Activision's pre-launch briefings ahead of the October 23, 2026 release. DMZ information will likely come last, since DMZ is not in either beta weekend.
