Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty that makes you choose how you Prestige. Activision's official "Ready for Launch: Progression and Prestige" breakdown, published on October 19, 2026, confirms the full structure: 55 player levels, 10 Prestige levels and 1,000 Prestige Master levels, with a fork at every Prestige between Classic Prestige (reset your unlocks for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and bonus rewards) and Regular Prestige (restart at Level 1 but keep all your level unlocks and Create-a-Class).
This full loadout costs $32.61 on Timesaver and is delivered within 4 hours — see all Call of Duty MW4 prices.

Updated October 19, 2026: this guide was first published on July 7 using the reveal-era details. It now reflects Activision's official October 19 progression blog. Several earlier statements were dropped or corrected, including the claim that Prestige Master permanently unlocks all multiplayer content, which the official breakdown does not say.
Multiplayer launches in full on October 23, 2026. Campaign Early Access is already live, and DMZ Early Access opens October 20 for digital pre-orders. That makes this a decision you'll face within days, not months. Below: what each path actually does, which one we'd pick, the best use of your Permanent Unlock Token, and every Prestige 1–10 reward.

TL;DR: Classic or Regular Prestige in MW4?
Pick Classic Prestige if you grind daily and want the fastest climb to Prestige Master: you get a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and Classic-only bonus rewards (such as the Classic version of each Prestige's final blueprint or skin), in exchange for resetting your level unlocks and Create-a-Class. Pick Regular Prestige if you play a few nights a week and don't want to lose your perks, streaks and classes. You choose again at every Prestige, so you can switch tracks whenever you like. All facts are from Activision's official progression blog (October 19, 2026).
The numbers that matter:
- 55 Multiplayer player levels (Private I to Commander), with at least one unlock every level
- 10 Prestige levels, each themed on a different Infinity Ward game, with a reward every 10 levels
- 1,000 Prestige Master levels: rewards every 5–10 levels up to 99, then every 25 levels
- +20% XP boost and 1 Permanent Unlock Token per Classic Prestige
- 70 separate DMZ levels on their own track (DMZ XP still feeds your 1–55 level)
What is the new MW4 Prestige system?
The progression ladder has three stages:
- Levels 1–55. You earn XP in Multiplayer and DMZ, and from Season 1 in Call of Duty: Warzone too, to climb from Private I to Commander. Each level unlocks weapons, equipment, perks, field upgrades or killstreaks.
- Prestige 1–10. After Level 55 you enter Prestige and replay Levels 1–55, picking up a themed reward every 10 levels.
- Prestige Master (Levels 56–1,000). After Prestige 10 your level no longer resets. You climb from 56 to 1,000 and become a Prestige Legend at the top.
Activision summed up the headline change in one line:
"For the first time in a Call of Duty game, players can now choose from two distinct Prestige paths: Classic Prestige and Regular Prestige." — Call of Duty Staff, callofduty.com, October 19, 2026
What's the difference between Classic and Regular Prestige?
When you finish Level 55, the game asks you to pick a track. Here is the official breakdown side by side:
| Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige | |
|---|---|---|
| Level resets to 1 | Yes | Yes |
| Level unlocks (perks, streaks, equipment, weapons) | Reset: re-earn them as you level | Kept |
| Create-a-Class | Reset | Kept |
| XP boost | +20% XP | None listed |
| Permanent Unlock Token | 1 per Classic Prestige | No |
| Prestige rewards | Shared rewards plus bonus rewards (e.g. The Vet Prime, Trench Fiend) | Shared rewards |
| Can switch next Prestige? | Yes | Yes |
The key detail is that the choice isn't permanent. Per Activision, "Each time you complete a new Prestige Level, you are given the option again to select either the Classic or Regular Track when entering the next Prestige Level." You could run Classic for Prestige 1 to bank a token and the boost, then switch to Regular for Prestige 2 if the reset hurts too much.
Activision's breakdown names level unlocks and Create-a-Class as what Classic resets. It doesn't list weapon levels or camos as part of that reset. Weapons have their own separate Weapon Prestige track: hitting a gun's max level lets you enter Weapon Prestige, where the four Pyroclast camos unlock in stages (Pyroclast at Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1, up to Pyroclast Cascade at Weapon Prestige Master Level 250).
Should you pick Classic or Regular Prestige?
Our verdict for each type of player:
- Daily grinders and anyone chasing Prestige Master → Classic. A 20% XP boost on every Prestige adds up. Over 10 Prestiges of 55 levels each, that's the biggest speed lever in the system, and you also collect up to 10 Permanent Unlock Tokens to make the resets hurt less over time.
- Weekend and casual players → Regular. If a Prestige takes you weeks, playing without Ghost, Cold-Blooded, C4 or your best streaks for that long costs more fun than the 20% XP is worth.
- Camo grinders → Regular, at least early on. Camo progress is tied to weapon level and kills, not player level. If you mostly level guns, you want your full classes and perks, not a stripped-back loadout.
- Completionists → Classic. The Classic-track rewards (for example "The Vet Prime" Mosin-Nagant blueprint instead of "The Vet") exist only on that track. If you want every cosmetic, you need to go Classic at least once per Prestige level.
The hybrid play: go Classic for Prestige 1. You keep the boost and a token, and the early game is when you know the fewest unlocks anyway. Then decide at each new Prestige based on how much the reset slowed you down.
What does the Permanent Unlock Token do?
Each Classic Prestige gives you one Permanent Unlock Token. Spend it on any single Level Unlock item from the loadout pool, and that item stays unlocked for your whole leveling journey, even through future Classic resets.
Activision's own advice is to spend tokens on Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and Equipment before Weapons. The reason: any time you get a Weapon Blueprint from the Store or a Battle Pass, the base weapon becomes permanently available anyway.
Using the official Multiplayer unlock table, these are the late unlocks that hurt most to lose after a reset, and so make the best token picks:
| Unlock | Type | Official unlock level |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost | Perk | 24 |
| Cold-Blooded | Perk | 36 |
| Claymore | Equipment | 37 |
| Advanced UAV | Killstreak | 40 |
| C4 | Equipment | 43 |
| Tactical Insertion | Field Upgrade | 45 |
| Stim | Equipment | 47 |
| Kill Chain | Perk | 48 |
| Throwing Knife | Equipment | 49* |
| Gunship | Killstreak | 51 |
| Air Lockdown | Killstreak | 55 |
*Activision's Throwing Knife example in the Prestige section says Level 48, but the official unlock table lists it at Level 49. Either way, it's one of the last unlocks.
Our pick for the first token: Ghost or Cold-Blooded. Running without a counter to UAVs and AI targeting for 24–36 levels changes how every match plays. Equipment like Claymore and C4 is easier to live without for a while.
What are all the MW4 Prestige 1–10 rewards?
Each Prestige level is themed on a different Infinity Ward game and gives a reward every 10 levels. Prestige 1 is fully revealed:
| Prestige 1 reward | Type | Unlocks at |
|---|---|---|

| Engage! | Weapon Charm | Level 30 |
| Men of Service | Large Decal | Level 40 |
| The Vet / The Vet Prime | Mosin-Nagant Blueprint | Level 50 |
The final reward of each Prestige comes in a Regular or a Classic version:
| Prestige | Inspired by | Final reward | Regular track | Classic track |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Call of Duty (2003) | Mosin-Nagant blueprint | The Vet | The Vet Prime |
| 2 | Call of Duty 2 (2005) | PPSh-41 blueprint | Calm Resolve | Trench Fiend |
| 3 | CoD 4: Modern Warfare (2007) | SAS operator skin | Watchtower | Watchtower Prime |
| 4 | Modern Warfare 2 (2009) | Finn LMG blueprint | Terminal | Torn Up |
| 5 | Modern Warfare 3 (2011) | Army SF Airborne skin | Razor One | Razor One Prime |

| 10 | Modern Warfare 4 | Sang 9mm blueprint | Boksu | Boksu Prime |

Does DMZ or Warzone XP count toward Prestige?
DMZ: yes. DMZ has its own separate 70-level track, which unlocks FOB stations, 3D Printer recipes, operator skins and more (see our DMZ FOB stations and Level 70 guide). Activision also confirms that "XP earned while playing DMZ also contributes to your overall 1-55 Player Progression." It doesn't work the other way: Multiplayer and Warzone XP does not raise your DMZ level.
That makes DMZ Early Access on October 20 a real head start on your first Prestige. Activision confirms the weapons, attachments and camos you earn there "will be available in Multiplayer" on October 23, and the DMZ XP you bank counts toward your 1–55 level under the rule above. More in our DMZ early access carry-over guide.
Warzone: from Season 1. MW4 Level Unlocks become available in Warzone, and Warzone XP starts counting toward your 1–55 progression, when Season 1 arrives shortly after launch. Our Season 1 roadmap has the date.
Does your old BO7 Prestige carry over to MW4?
No. Activision's progression blog doesn't cover BO7 at all: it describes MW4 as a fresh climb from Private I to Commander with its own new Prestige ladder. For our full breakdown of what resets and what you keep from Black Ops 7, read does your Prestige and rank carry over to MW4.
How do you reach Prestige faster at launch?
Four XP levers stack:
- Classic Prestige's +20% XP. It applies once you take Prestige 1 on the Classic track.
- Double XP tokens. Activision's blog mentions Double Weapon XP Tokens for weapon leveling. For player XP tokens, see every source and the daily cap in our free double XP tokens guide.
- Daily Challenges. Finish all three for a "hefty XP bonus", and reroll one per day.
- DMZ Early Access (October 20). Bank player XP before multiplayer opens.
For a day-one plan, follow our launch-day leveling checklist and the fastest rank-up routes. If you want to know the total time commitment, how long it takes to unlock everything in MW4 puts numbers on it.

FAQ
Can I buy this loadout instead of farming it? Yes: this loadout costs $32.61 on Timesaver, and a Timesaver pro completes it by hand within 4 hours. How handover works and what happens if something goes wrong: account safety.
What is the max level in MW4? The regular player level caps at 55 (Commander). After 10 Prestiges you enter Prestige Master, where your level runs from 56 to 1,000. Level 1,000 makes you a Prestige Legend.
How many Prestiges are in Modern Warfare 4? There are 10 Prestige levels, followed by Prestige Master with 1,000 levels, per Activision's October 19, 2026 progression blog.
Is Classic Prestige worth it in MW4? It is if you play a lot. You get +20% XP, a Permanent Unlock Token and Classic-only bonus rewards each time, but you lose your level unlocks and Create-a-Class. Casual players usually do better on Regular Prestige.
Can you switch from Classic to Regular Prestige? Yes. You choose a track every time you enter a new Prestige level, so you can change direction at every Prestige.
What should I use the MW4 Permanent Unlock Token on? Activision recommends perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and equipment over weapons, because a weapon blueprint from the Store or Battle Pass makes the base gun permanent anyway. Late perks like Cold-Blooded (Level 36) or Ghost (Level 24) are the strongest picks.
Does DMZ XP count toward Prestige in MW4? Yes. DMZ XP counts toward your 1–55 player level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP doesn't count toward your separate 70-level DMZ track.
