Two days into Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer, the loudest argument isn't about guns or maps. It's matchmaking. Players who spent the beta queuing Open playlists logged in on launch night and couldn't find one. Here is what is actually confirmed, what Infinity Ward said on the record, what is still community guesswork, and how to get softer games without chasing a setting that doesn't exist.

Quick answer: does MW4 have SBMM?
TL;DR: Yes, Modern Warfare 4 has skill-based matchmaking, and at launch there is no playlist labeled Open Matchmaking. CharlieIntel's October 22 check of the launch menu found every playlist on the "Standard" system from the beta. Open was tested in the beta; Call of Duty's own data showed Open playlists in Black Ops 7 had 32.7% higher quit rates and 59.2% more "Not Fun" ratings than Standard. Infinity Ward says its goal is "that every match is a good match" but hasn't shared specifics. There is no SBMM toggle. Your options: private matches vs. bots, Popular Modes (community-tested, unconfirmed), solo off-peak queue, or bot lobbies.
Is there Open Matchmaking in Modern Warfare 4?
Not as a labeled playlist, as of launch. When multiplayer went live in New Zealand on October 22, the first thing players noticed was the missing playlist. CharlieIntel posted it within hours:
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 MP currently has no Open Matchmaking playlists. All playlists have the 'Standard' system that debuted in the beta." — CharlieIntel on X, October 22, 2026
The launch menu in the screenshot above matches that. You get Quick Play (10 modes), a Featured column (Kill Block Gunfight 10v10, Frontline, Collateral, Ground War: Combat Outpost, Inflation, Proving Grounds) and a Popular Modes column starting with Domination. None of them is labeled Open. Infinity Ward hasn't detailed whether every playlist is weighted the same way, so treat "identical SBMM everywhere" as unconfirmed (see Popular Modes below).
Activision has not said Open Matchmaking is gone for good, and it has not said it is coming back. Treat any "Open returns in Season 1" post as rumor until it appears on callofduty.com or the official Call of Duty X accounts.
Why did Infinity Ward drop Open Matchmaking after the beta?
Activision hasn't given a launch-day reason. The most likely explanation (our inference) is its own data: before the beta even started, Call of Duty told the community Open was hurting more players than it helped. On August 19, the official Call of Duty account posted a thread on matchmaking going into the MW4 Beta. It opened:
"Short version: the initial batch of data is showing strong improvements with the new system." — Call of Duty on X, August 19, 2026
The numbers it shared:
| Official stat (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Quit rates in Open vs. Standard (80% of BO7 players, launch to Season 04) | 32.7% higher |
| Kills per minute in Open vs. Standard | 14.4% fewer |
| Win rates in Open vs. Standard | 5.3% lower |
| "Not Fun" ratings in Open vs. Standard | 59.2% more |
| Nuketown 24/7 quit rate under Open | up 141% |
| Most competitive players under Open | left 1 in every 3 matches |
| Quit-rate drop since BO7 Season 05 (more than half of players) | 41% |
The same thread said search times are down and average ping has improved since Season 05, and added that "time of day, location and your connection still impact your experience the most." Source.
Persistent lobbies took a hit too. Per the same official thread, as reported by Dexerto and DualShockers, about 50% of players leave after their first match, and by game three almost none of the original lobby remains. Activision's case is that fresh lobbies get you into a match faster on a better connection.
The community pushed back hard. Call of Duty's last word before the beta was:
"Matchmaking isn't just data, it's a feeling. So jump in, feel it for yourself in Beta." — Call of Duty on X, August 20, 2026
The beta ran Open next to the new system. Launch shipped without a labeled Open playlist. We read that as the data winning, but Activision hasn't said so directly.
What did Infinity Ward say about MW4 matchmaking at launch?
Infinity Ward's only on-record launch comment is from Joe Cecot, Multiplayer creative director, speaking to IGN on October 23:
"I don't know if there's perfecting it. For us, I think the most important thing when we look at matchmaking is that the matches we put together are good matches... though we're not talking about exact specifics on matchmaking, our end goal is that every match is a good match." — Joe Cecot, Infinity Ward, via IGN
What that confirms: SBMM is in, and IW is measuring how matchmaking affects groups of players. What it doesn't confirm: how skill is weighted, whether lobbies persist, or whether Open is coming back. The MW4 Launch Patch Notes including the stability, UI, Multiplayer and DMZ fixes added since launch, don't announce any matchmaking change. The only upcoming change IW has flagged is that it is "already looking at potential weapon tuning for next week", which is a possibility, not a dated patch.
Why do MW4 lobbies feel so sweaty?
Three things stack on each other at launch.
- No labeled opt-out. At Black Ops 7's launch you could opt into Open playlists. In MW4 you can't. That's likely a big part of the "harder than BO7" feeling.
- Launch-week population may skew experienced. Our read: the players grinding on day one tend to be the most invested. CharlieIntel's launch take was that "SBMM is cranked up to the max" (via Push Square), and X posts collected by Dexerto described "every single lobby" as "a CDL final."
- The movement changed. One r/CallOfDuty player this week argued that switching from BO7's movement to MW4's is costing returning players gunfights, which reads as tougher matchmaking even when it isn't.
Reddit is split the way it always is. In an r/CallOfDuty SBMM thread this week, one player described watching a relative play on a casual account: he missed plenty of shots and still won fights, while the poster's own lobbies punished every miss. Others in the same thread answered that a consistently negative K/D says more about the player than the matchmaker. Several said they're spending launch week in DMZ because extraction fights don't feel like a tournament final every time. All of that is player opinion, not Activision data, but it is what the playerbase is feeling right now.
Can you turn off SBMM in Modern Warfare 4?
No. There is no setting, toggle or menu option to disable skill-based matchmaking in MW4, and there never has been in Call of Duty. Anyone selling an "SBMM off" button is selling something that doesn't exist. Reverse boosting (tanking games on purpose to drop your skill rating) is the other trap. It wastes hours, and Activision treats matchmaking manipulation as a violation it can penalize.
What you can control is which environment you play in.

How do you get easier lobbies in MW4 right now?
Our recommendations, roughly from most to least reliable (only the first is guaranteed):
- Private matches vs. bots. Fully official and the only guaranteed easy lobby in the game. Good for learning maps and testing attachments. In recent Call of Duty games private matches haven't paid out XP or camo progress, so use them to practice, not to grind.
- Bot lobbies (service). If the goal is progress (weapon levels, military and mastery camos, account level), lower-pressure lobbies mean more kills and more XP per match. Read the risks first: Activision's Security and Enforcement Policy bans exploiting the game for XP or unlocks, so no shortcut is risk-free. See how MW4 bot lobbies work and whether they're safe.
- Popular Modes and persistent-lobby playlists. IGN confirmed a persistent lobby option sits in the Popular Modes tab, but the game doesn't say whether it uses looser matchmaking. YouTuber TheXclusiveAce reported that modes under Popular use a more forgiving system, and Dexerto passed on his advice to queue Search and Destroy or Team Deathmatch from there instead of Quick Play. This is community testing, not an official statement.
- Solo queue at off-peak hours. Unverified, but commonly reported: a stacked party at prime time gives the matchmaker more to balance against, and late-night solo sessions can feel more varied. Call of Duty itself says time of day, location and connection matter most.
- Objective modes over slayer modes. A comfort tip, not a matchmaking fix: Domination and Hardpoint spread the action around, while in TDM every bad gunfight shows up on the scoreboard.
Does SBMM slow down camo and weapon leveling?
It can for an individual player, and that's the real cost for grinders. MW4's camo journey is "the deepest we've ever built in a Modern Warfare game," per Infinity Ward's launch patch notes, and it's shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and, from Season 1, Warzone. Most camo challenges are kill-based, so if your lobbies are tougher than your current form, each challenge takes longer. Be careful with the population data, though: across Black Ops 7 players, Call of Duty measured 14.4% fewer kills per minute in Open than in Standard, so on average Standard was not the slower system. The slowdown is a personal experience, not a proven population-wide effect.
Two free ways to soften the grind this weekend:
- 2XP. Call of Duty's launch promo gives you 2XP if you post or reply with your ATVI ID, @CallofDuty and "MW4 2XP". It ends October 26 at 10 AM PT (official post). Our guides to MW4 Double XP tokens and every free 2XP source cover the rest.
- Tokens only burn in matches. MW4 2XP tokens only count down while you're in a match, so queue times and menus no longer eat them.
If you'd rather skip the grind, this is what our MW4 services are for:
Sweaty lobbies? Lock in your MW4 setup now: bot lobbies first, then camo and weapon leveling.
- MW4 Bot Lobbies: easier lobbies to level guns and grind camos with less SBMM sweat
- MW4 Mastery Camo Unlock: the mastery camos across Multiplayer and DMZ (Warzone tracking starts with Season 1 on November 6)
- MW4 Weapon Leveling: max any gun and unlock every attachment
- MW4 Account Leveling: rank up and reach Prestige without the grind

Will Open Matchmaking come back in Season 1?
Unconfirmed. Here's what's known about the next few weeks:
| Date | What's coming | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Week of Oct 26 | Possible first weapon tuning pass | Infinity Ward "looking at" it (launch patch notes) |
| Oct 26, 10 AM PT | Launch 2XP promo ends | Confirmed (Call of Duty on X) |
| Nov 6, 2026 | Season 1: Battle Pass, BlackCell, MW4 in Warzone | Confirmed (official MW4 roadmap) |
| Season 1 | Ranked Play | Not dated by Activision |
| Any date | Open Matchmaking returning | No announcement |
If Open does come back, expect it in the Season 1 patch notes or blog on callofduty.com, or on the official Call of Duty X accounts. Watch the Season 1 roadmap breakdown and our MW4 Ranked Play release date page. Ranked uses its own skill-rating system, so it's a separate question from public-match SBMM.

FAQ
Can I buy this loadout instead of farming it? Yes: this loadout costs $32.61 on Timesaver, and a Timesaver pro completes it by hand within 4 hours. How handover works and what happens if something goes wrong: account safety.
Does MW4 have SBMM? Yes. Modern Warfare 4 uses skill-based matchmaking in multiplayer. CharlieIntel's October 22 check of the launch menu found every playlist on the "Standard" system that debuted in the beta. Call of Duty says connection, location and time of day still affect your experience the most.
Does MW4 have Open Matchmaking? Not as a labeled playlist at launch. Open playlists were tested in the beta, but the launch menu has none. Activision hasn't announced whether Open will return, so any Season 1 claim is unconfirmed until it's posted on callofduty.com.
Why did Call of Duty remove Open Matchmaking? Activision hasn't stated a launch reason; its published data is the likely one. On August 19, 2026 the official Call of Duty account said that in Black Ops 7, Open playlists saw 32.7% higher quit rates, 14.4% fewer kills per minute, 5.3% lower win rates and 59.2% more "Not Fun" ratings than Standard. On Nuketown 24/7, quit rates rose 141%.
Can you turn off SBMM in MW4? No. There is no toggle or setting. Private matches vs. bots are the only guaranteed easy lobby. Persistent-lobby Popular Modes may be looser according to community testing, and bot-lobby services are another option if you accept the account risk described in Activision's enforcement policy.
Does MW4 disband lobbies after every match? Per Call of Duty's August thread, about half of players leave after the first match and almost none of a lobby remains after three games, which is its case for fresh lobbies. IGN confirmed a persistent lobby option exists in the Popular Modes tab, but Activision hasn't said how its matchmaking differs.
Is SBMM in MW4 DMZ? Activision hasn't published how DMZ matchmaking is weighted, so treat any specific DMZ SBMM claim as unconfirmed. DMZ also has its own weapon tuning, separate from Multiplayer, per the launch patch notes.
