NBA 2K27 Player XP: How to Level Cards Fast for the Greatness Series (Season 2)

Quick answer (TL;DR)

Player XP is NBA 2K27's MyTEAM card-leveling system: every Player Card earns XP when you take it onto the court, and standout performances speed it up. Leveling unlocks attribute boosts, extra stamina, prize basketballs and Badge slots, and those stack on top of Dynamic Duos, Evolutions and Coach Cards. In Season 2 it matters more than ever, because the Greatness Series challenges are built on it: max the Player XP on a card from each of the 30 NBA teams and you climb a 39-reward ladder. The first set (September 18) ended at a 95 OVR Pixel Cut Patrick Ewing; the second, "NBA is Back" (live October 23), ends at a 96 OVR Magma Donovan Mitchell.

The fastest method players report right now: level one card at a time, score only with that card, and run short offline games (Clutch Time on Rookie, or offline Triple Threat), with an XP-boost card on the floor. Expect a long grind. One player who tracked it estimated about 55 offline Triple Threat games per card. This page applies to Season 2 on Patch 2.0, checked October 25, 2026.

What is Player XP in NBA 2K27 MyTEAM?

Player XP is a progression track attached to each Player Card. 2K's official MyTEAM Player XP Game Guide (published October 14, 2026) puts it this way:

"Earn XP by taking any player card onto the court and accelerate your progress by delivering standout performances. By doing so, you'll unlock player attribute boosts, extra stamina, prize basketballs, Badge slots, and even more." — 2K, MyTEAM Player XP Game Guide

Before 2K27, a MyTEAM card's rating barely moved unless it had an Evolution path or a Dynamic Duo. Player XP means a card you actually play gets better over time. The mode's principal producer, Jonathan Smith, called the philosophy "every single card matters" in 2K's August reveal, adding that "the new Player XP system means that cards you run get better the more you play them."

What rewards does Player XP unlock?

2K has described the rewards in two places, and together they give this list:

RewardSource
Attribute boosts2K Player XP Game Guide (Oct 14) and 2K Newsroom reveal (Aug 18)
Badge slotsBoth sources
Extra stamina2K Player XP Game Guide
Prize basketballs2K Player XP Game Guide
Start a game with Takeover active2K Newsroom reveal
A permanent additional turbo meter2K Newsroom reveal

2K's guide adds that all of these "stack directly on top of any attribute and Badge bonuses your cards receive from Dynamic Duos, Evolutions, and Coach Cards."

2K hasn't published the XP needed per level or how much a stat line is worth. Players on r/MyTeam talk about cards having three levels (one player measured "1200 total stats per card ... for 3 levels"), but treat that as a player observation until 2K documents the curve.

Does Player XP reset if I sell or exchange a card?

No. 2K's guide says that if you "auction a card or use it in the Exchange, your progress isn't wiped. If you pick up that card at a later date, you'll continue exactly where you left off." That means you can feed a leveled card into The Exchange or sell it on the Auction House and still keep its level if you get it back.

How do the Greatness Series challenges work?

The Greatness Series is where Player XP turns into rewards. Both sets so far share the same four-tier structure, based on maxing a card's Player XP for each NBA team:

TierGreatness Series 1 (Sep 18)Greatness Series 2: "NBA is Back" (Oct 23)
Max a card from one teamPink Diamond player for that team (30)Galaxy Opal team reward (30)

Structures as reported by GameDaily on September 18 and October 22, 2026. Ewing's card is listed as not auctionable on 2kauction.

2K's own announcement for the second set, posted on Steam on October 23: "Greatness Series: NBA is Back Packs, Exchanges, and Challenges are LIVE. Add top NBA talent in the all-new Magma Tier and go be great!" GameDaily calls Magma "a new Gem Tier."

Do cards I maxed for Ewing count toward Mitchell?

Players report that they don't. The second challenge set wants a fresh max-level card for each team, and cards maxed before it went live didn't count. A player who'd already finished Ewing asked whether they'd have to "go thru all the trouble of doing all 30 teams again," and in another thread a player said a maxed Lakers card didn't count: "You need do do a new one." Another regretted finishing "a ton of player[s]" in the days before Greatness 2 went live, "losing out on at least 10 cards I could've gotten."

The lesson for the next set: once you've finished the current Greatness ladder, keep a few cards from different teams almost maxed. 2K hasn't confirmed how future sets will track progress, but this costs you nothing if it turns out not to matter.

What's the fastest way to level Player XP?

2K only says "standout performances" speed up XP. Everything below comes from players grinding it on r/MyTeam this week (1, 2, 3), so it's player-tested advice, not a 2K rule. The common view among those players is that points are the main XP driver.

  • Level one card at a time. "Score with 1 card until you max his [XP] then move onto the next," as one player put it. Spreading touches around levels everyone slowly.
  • Only score with the card you're leveling. Several players say points are "by far" the biggest XP source. Another doubts rebounds, assists, blocks and steals count much: "I dont believe anything but points matters. If they do, its a small amount."
  • Play the shortest games. The most-repeated method is offline Clutch Time on Rookie, shooting 4-pointers. One player resets the first Breakout board until it offers Clutch Time games and reports "35-50 pts in ~5 minutes counting load time." Another says shooting 4s on Rookie can get you 50 to 60 points.
  • Offline Triple Threat is the steady option. Several players name offline Triple Threat, and one calls Intermediate Trials Triple Threat "the best for efficiency and rep farming."
  • Use Domination to level several cards at once. If you're already clearing Domination (Season 2 added Historic and All-Time tiers, per 2K's Season 2 Courtside Report), put cards from teams you still need in that lineup so the games count twice.
  • Line it up with mode-completion work. 2K's Season 2 Courtside Report says Mode Completion Event Cards come through daily Play Now Challenges. Players suggest picking the modes you'd grind for those anyway, then rotating Greatness cards into those lineups.

One player-reported warning: a player who put up a full box score with an Amethyst Bam Adebayo reported "15/5/1 with 2 blocks in triple threat ... and my XP barely moved." Players read that as a sign that volume of points matters more than a balanced stat line, though one box score doesn't prove the formula.

Which cards give a Player XP boost?

Some cards boost the XP earned by teammates on the floor. 2K hasn't published a list, but this is the one players are passing around on r/MyTeam (as of October 24):

CardWhere it comes from (player-reported)
Dark Matter Derrick RoseSeason 1 Pro Pass, Level 40
Antonio Daniels (Thunder)Series 1, Amethyst
Kerry Kittles (Nets)Series 1, Amethyst
Bob Sura (Cavs)Series 1, Amethyst
John Long (Pistons)Series 1, Amethyst
Vinny Del Negro (Spurs)Series 1, Amethyst
Kevin Loughery (Wizards)Series 1, Amethyst
Take the Crown set playersReported to give a bigger boost than the cards above

The player who posted the list says they're "double stacking DM D.Rose x1 boost and DM Gabby Williams x2 boost" with the card they're leveling and "definitely notice the boost." Not everyone agrees. One player said they'd used all their Player XP boosts "and they've basically done nothing." Check the boost text on the card in-game before buying one, and don't overpay. As one player put it, "XP grinds may not be going anywhere," so these cards will keep being useful.

How long does the Greatness grind take?

Nobody outside 2K has an official figure. Here's what players who've finished or tracked it report:

  • About 55 offline Triple Threat games per card if you score only with that card, based on one player's tracked stats. Across 30 teams that's roughly 1,650 games, or about 60 hours.
  • About 2 to 2.5 hours per card, according to another player, who put the total at 60 to 70 hours (the per-card figure works out to 60 to 75).
  • One player finished Ewing "over 3 weeks" by rotating a card from each team into the offline modes they were already playing.

That last approach is the one most experienced players recommend. "These grinds aren't mandatory don't burn yourself out," one wrote. Another pointed out that by the time you finish, "many better cheaper auctionable cards would be available." If you mostly play online, weigh the Magma Mitchell against simply buying the cards your lineup needs. If you play offline anyway, the Greatness ladder pays you for games you'd play regardless.

Player XP vs Season XP vs Evolutions: what's the difference?

These get mixed up constantly:

  • Player XP (MyTEAM): a level track on each card, earned by playing that card. It feeds the Greatness Series.
  • Season XP: your account's Level 1 to 40 Season track, shared between The City and MyTEAM. In Season 2 that track tops out with a Level 40 Pixel Cut Karl-Anthony Towns on the MyTEAM side (see our Season 2 rewards guide).
  • Evolutions: specific cards that upgrade when you hit stat requirements. They're separate from Player XP, but both can progress on the same card in the same game.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to get Player XP in NBA 2K27? Players on r/MyTeam report that points drive most of the XP, so level one card at a time and score only with it. The most-used method is offline Clutch Time on Rookie shooting 4-pointers, with an XP-boost card such as Dark Matter Derrick Rose on the floor. 2K's own guide only says standout performances speed up XP.

How does the NBA 2K27 Greatness Series work? You max the Player XP on a card from each NBA team. Each team, division and conference you complete pays a card, and finishing all 30 teams pays the top reward: a 95 OVR Pixel Cut Patrick Ewing in the first set and a 96 OVR Magma Donovan Mitchell in the "NBA is Back" set that went live on October 23, 2026. Each set has 39 rewards.

Do my maxed cards from the Ewing challenge count for Magma Mitchell? Players say no. The second set needs a new max-level card for each team, and cards maxed before it went live didn't count. 2K hasn't published a rule on this, so check the challenge screen.

Does Player XP reset if I sell a card? No. 2K's Player XP Game Guide says auctioning a card or using it in the Exchange doesn't wipe its progress, and if you get the card back later you'll continue where you left off.

What does Player XP unlock? 2K lists attribute boosts, extra stamina, prize basketballs and Badge slots, and its August reveal also named starting a game with Takeover active and a permanent extra turbo meter. These stack with Dynamic Duos, Evolutions and Coach Cards.

How long does it take to max a card? There's no official number. One player who tracked it estimated about 55 offline Triple Threat games per card scoring only with that card, or roughly 60 hours for all 30 teams. Another estimated 2 to 2.5 hours per card.

The bottom line

Player XP started as a nice extra and has become MyTEAM's main offline grind, because each Greatness Series set asks you to max a card from all 30 teams. The player-tested route: level one card at a time, score with nothing else, play the shortest offline games, and put an XP-boost card on the floor. If you play online and only want the meta cards, you can skip it. If you play offline anyway, a 96 OVR Magma Mitchell is waiting at the end of games you'd be playing regardless.
