Quick answer: Phantom Blade Zero has four difficulty options: Wayfarer (story-first, cinematic), Pathbreaker (the standard challenge), Hellwalker (smarter, more aggressive enemy AI and new boss moves) and 66 Days (Hellwalker difficulty with a hard cap of 66 deaths before your run ends). Most first-timers should start on Pathbreaker; action veterans can go straight to Hellwalker. Director Soulframe Liang puts a full run at about 25 to 30 hours for an experienced player, but critics who finished the review build took about 40 to 50 hours to reach the credits. Boss fights restart at the phase you died in, not from phase one. New Game Plus is confirmed, and Liang says most players can earn the Platinum trophy in one run on any difficulty. The game launches October 29, 2026 (evening of October 28 in the Americas) on PS5 and PC.
Phantom Blade Zero is the first big wuxia action game from S-GAME, and one of the most common pre-launch questions is simple: how hard is it, and which setting should I pick on the title screen? Unlike a traditional Souls game with one fixed difficulty, S-GAME built a ladder of options, and the top rungs change how enemies think rather than just how hard they hit. This guide covers each mode, what reviewers found once they played the full game, how long it really takes, and which mode fits your playstyle. For unlock times and download size, see our Phantom Blade Zero release time and preload guide.
What are the Phantom Blade Zero difficulty modes?
There are four options. The official PlayStation Blog State of Play recap names three of them directly (PlayStation's post covers the PS5 version; the game also launches on Steam and the Epic Games Store): "If you'd simply like to enjoy the story, Wayfarer mode is for you. But if you want to ramp up the challenge, try Hellwalker to face more advanced and adaptive enemy intelligence or take on Sixty-Six Days mode, which isn't for the faint of heart." The fourth, Pathbreaker, was shown in the same August 17 State of Play presentation and reported by GamingBolt as the step between Wayfarer and Hellwalker. Full reviews published on October 25 and 26 confirm all four settings: Eurogamer counts "four difficulty settings", and TheSixthAxis says "Pathbreaker equates to normal".
| Mode | Who it is for | What changes | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Story and spectacle players, newcomers to action games | Less aggressive, less reactive enemies; easier stance breaks; more executions | Official (PlayStation Blog) |
| Pathbreaker | Most players on a first run | The standard ("normal") challenge level | Shown in State of Play, confirmed by reviews |
| Hellwalker | Experienced action and Soulslike players | Top-tier adaptive AI, new boss skills and attack patterns | Official (PlayStation Blog) |
| 66 Days | Challenge runners and streamers | Hellwalker difficulty plus a 66-death limit; run ends at zero | Official name; rules confirmed by the director |
How hard is Wayfarer mode, and does it make bosses trivial?
No, and that is by design. In an October 2026 interview with 4Gamer, summarized in English by GamerFuzion, Liang said the gap between Wayfarer and Hellwalker is mostly not about numbers. Health and damage shift a little; what changes a lot is how aggressive the AI is and how much it reacts to you. On Wayfarer, enemies circle you, show their forms and stances without pressing hard, and their stance breaks easily.
Liang said one-hit kills would have been easy to build but boring, so Wayfarer keeps the blade clashes and stylish moves: more execution animations, multi-kill moves when you are surrounded and simpler combo strings. If you bought Phantom Blade Zero for the kung fu cinema rather than the challenge, Wayfarer is the right pick and you are not missing story content by choosing it.
What is Pathbreaker, and should you start there?
Pathbreaker is the standard setting and the best default for most players. It keeps the core loop the developers designed around: blocking, parrying, dodging and managing Sha-Chi, the combat resource spent on blocks and heavy attacks, without the extra AI aggression of Hellwalker. If you have finished a couple of action RPGs or Soulslikes before but are not looking for punishment, start here. You can step up to Hellwalker later.
S-GAME has not published an official description of Pathbreaker the way it has for Wayfarer and Hellwalker, but review coverage lines up with the previews. TheSixthAxis describes it as the "normal" setting that "provides an easier way into the game while still making you pay attention". We will add the in-game mode text after launch.
What does Hellwalker change beyond enemy health?
Hellwalker is where Phantom Blade Zero tries to beat the usual "hard mode means bigger numbers" approach. In a group interview transcribed by Wccftech on October 8, Liang said:
"We don't just change the stats. We change the AI and enemy behavior trees. At higher difficulties, enemies are more active and have more skills, including more dangerous ones." (Soulframe Liang, S-GAME founder and director)
His example is the Flower Bride boss. On Hellwalker she attacks more actively, and her single white flower attack becomes three white flowers coming from different directions. Liang said that fight is hard even for some of S-GAME's own designers.
In the 4Gamer interview he described the goal as making enemies act like a human opponent in a player-versus-player fight. Hellwalker enemies feint to bait you, stop a combo halfway to see what you commit to, and then punish it. He was clear that the AI does not read your inputs; it runs on behavior trees tuned to feel reactive.
Pick Hellwalker if: you finished games like Sekiro, Nioh or Lies of P, you enjoy learning bosses through repetition, or you plan to attempt 66 Days later.
How does 66 Days mode work?
66 Days ties the difficulty to the story. Soul, the protagonist, is framed for his master's murder and left with a wound that gives him 66 days to live. In 66 Days mode, every death costs one of those days.
- Difficulty: identical to Hellwalker. Liang told 4Gamer that both modes use the same top-tier enemy AI with no gap between them.
- The one extra rule: you can die 66 times in total. Liang told the October roundtable the mode "limits your retries to 66" and joked that many journalists had already used around 20 retries in just Chapters One and Two.
- When the counter hits zero: the playthrough ends, per GamingBolt's State of Play report. S-GAME has not said whether the save is deleted or whether anything carries over.
- Unlocking it: GamingBolt reported that 66 Days opens after you finish the game on Pathbreaker or Hellwalker. Treat this as reported until the launch build confirms it.
- Deathless clear: Liang said nobody on the S-GAME team has finished 66 Days without dying yet, though he believes a player will eventually manage it.
Because enemies never get smarter than Hellwalker, the real skill check is consistency across every boss in the run. Liang also said at least the last 10 weapons in the game, including ones taken from powerful late bosses, are meant to create a fresh experience when you carry them into early fights in New Game Plus or 66 Days.
How hard is Phantom Blade Zero, according to the reviews?
More forgiving than its reputation, at least once you learn the parry. Reviews went live on October 25 and 26, and the game sits at a Metascore of 88 from 42 critic reviews on its Metacritic page (PS5 and PC listing, checked October 28). The verdicts on difficulty split in two directions.
IGN's reviewer played on the top setting the whole way through and found it well balanced:
"I played on the hardest difficulty, and the tuning consistently felt exactly right." (IGN review)
He beat "just about every major boss fight in two or three tries", while dying nearly 200 times overall. He says roughly half of those deaths came from falls and getting stuck on the environment, not from enemies. ComicBook's review, quoted on Metacritic, reported a similar 197 deaths over about 50 hours.
Eurogamer, whose review is the lowest score on Metacritic at 60, had the opposite problem: bosses felt "spongy" on the normal setting and even on Wayfarer, with parries and dodges chipping away only a little of a boss's Sha-Chi. S-GAME has already responded. Two days before the embargo, it shipped a 67 GB update that changed boss, enemy, ability and weapon stats. Eurogamer quotes the studio: "These changes aim to make the difficulty curve feel smoother, both in boss fights and as you progress through each area." Launch-day players get that tuning, though Eurogamer notes it had no time to replay the whole game and confirm the effect.
Two systems keep the challenge fair on every setting:
- Phase checkpoints: IGN and Eurogamer both confirm that dying in a boss's second phase puts you back at the start of that phase, not the start of the fight.
- Weapon respec: early on you can upgrade and downgrade weapons freely and get your materials back. Per Eurogamer, at higher upgrade levels each reset costs tokens, but the game hands out plenty of them.
Can you change difficulty mid-game, and what happens when you die?
Push Square's hands-on preview reported that difficulty options can be switched from the pause menu, "allowing you an easier time on demand". Some other previews were less clear on whether you can move back up after dropping down, so check the in-game menu text before lowering it on a save you care about. 66 Days is a separate run type and should not be expected to allow switching.
Death is also gentler than in a traditional Soulslike. The same Push Square preview reports that "you don't lose anything upon death and the enemies don't respawn." There is no currency to drop and recover, which removes the biggest source of frustration in the genre.
How long is Phantom Blade Zero?
Longer than the developer's estimate. Liang put a full playthrough at 25 to 30 hours "for an experienced player who doesn't get stuck on bosses," but the critics who finished the full game took between 40 and 50 hours to reach the credits:
| Source | Playtime to credits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Soulframe Liang (director) | 25 to 30 hours | Experienced player, no boss walls |
| TheSixthAxis | About 40 hours | Story run, helping NPCs along the way |
| Insider Gaming | About 40 hours played | Estimates 45 to 50 hours for a completionist run |
| IGN | About 50 hours | Hardest difficulty, completionist run across eight maps |
Expect about 30 hours if you push the main path, and 40 to 50 if you explore. IGN calls many quests and areas "completely missable", including the Donnie Yen training questline, so a first run that ignores side content will be much shorter than the review times.
- Main path, experienced player: about 25 to 30 hours, per the director
- Story plus most side content: about 40 hours (TheSixthAxis)
- Completionist: about 50 hours (IGN), with Insider Gaming estimating 45 to 50
- Weapons: more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges (secondary weapons), per the PlayStation Blog, though Liang says you can finish with just one
- Side quests: completing some can open new story paths, per the PlayStation Blog
- New Game Plus: confirmed, with no new story content locked behind it
If you get stuck, Liang's advice is not to grind reflexes. Phantom Blade Zero is an RPG: swap weapons, change accessories or reset an upgraded weapon to recover its materials and reinvest them elsewhere. A weapon suited to a specific boss can make the fight much easier.
Does difficulty affect trophies or the Platinum?
According to Liang, it should not. He told the October roundtable that "most players can get their platinum trophy in one run, on any difficulty, as long as they spend enough time exploring, fighting and learning the mechanics." That means you do not need a Hellwalker or 66 Days clear for the Platinum.
The PS5 trophy list is now public ahead of launch: PSNProfiles lists 36 trophies (1 Platinum, 3 Gold, 14 Silver and 18 Bronze), and Push Square reports the same 36-trophy count. Steam shows that the PC version has achievements but had not published the list on October 28. We will confirm the exact unlock conditions for hidden trophies after launch.
Which difficulty should you choose?
- You want the story and the kung fu spectacle: Wayfarer.
- You have played a few action RPGs and want a fair fight: Pathbreaker.
- You love Sekiro-style duels and learning boss patterns: Hellwalker.
- You have already cleared the game and want a real test: 66 Days.
The safest plan for most people is Pathbreaker first, then Hellwalker or 66 Days in New Game Plus once you own the late-game weapons. Since deaths cost nothing in the standard modes and the setting can reportedly be adjusted from the pause menu, there is little risk in starting one step higher than you think you need.
FAQ
How many difficulty modes does Phantom Blade Zero have? Four: Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker and 66 Days. Wayfarer is the easiest, Hellwalker adds adaptive enemy AI, and 66 Days uses Hellwalker difficulty with a 66-death limit.
Is 66 Days mode harder than Hellwalker? The enemies are not harder. Director Soulframe Liang said both modes use the same top-tier AI. The difference is that 66 Days only gives you 66 deaths for the whole run, so it demands far more consistency.
Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike? Not exactly. Liang calls it a hybrid with RPG systems, Souls-inspired level design and fast combo combat. Unlike most Soulslikes it has multiple difficulty options, and previews report you lose nothing on death and enemies do not respawn.
How long does it take to beat Phantom Blade Zero? The director estimates 25 to 30 hours for an experienced player. Reviewers took about 40 hours (TheSixthAxis) to about 50 hours (IGN) to reach the credits, and Insider Gaming estimates 45 to 50 hours for a completionist run.
Do you have to restart a boss fight from phase one when you die? No. IGN and Eurogamer both report that if you die in a later phase, you restart at the beginning of that phase with full resources.
Can you get the Platinum trophy on the easiest difficulty? Liang said most players can earn the Platinum in one run on any difficulty. The PS5 list has 36 trophies: 1 Platinum, 3 Gold, 14 Silver and 18 Bronze.
Does Phantom Blade Zero have New Game Plus? Yes. New Game Plus is confirmed. It adds no new story content but lets you bring powerful late-game weapons into early boss fights.
