The heroic key grind on the Anniversary realms just got cut by more than half. With the Gods of Zul'Aman update that went live on October 22, 2026, Blizzard dropped the reputation needed to buy every heroic key from Revered to Honored, put all heroics at their final, easier tuning, and added Badges of Justice to almost every raid boss in Outland. If you shelved an alt because five Revered grinds looked like a month of your life, the math is different now.
This guide was first published in early September, when keys still needed Revered. Updated October 28, 2026 for the Zul'Aman patch: what changed, what each key needs today, how the new badge sources change fresh-70 gearing, and where a boost still saves real time.
Last checked October 28, 2026 against Blizzard's patch announcement. Realms are on Phase 3.5 (Zul'Aman), level cap 70. Sunwell Plateau has no announced date.
Key Takeaways (TL;DR)
- Heroic keys now need Honored, not Revered. Blizzard, October 22: "The reputation requirement to purchase Heroic dungeon keys has been reduced to Honored." There are still five keys, one per dungeon cluster.
- About 57% less rep per key. Reaching Honored from Neutral is 9,000 reputation (3,000 + 6,000). Revered was 21,000, because the Honored-to-Revered tier adds another 12,000 (warcraft.wiki.gg).
- Heroics are easier now. "All Heroic dungeons will be adjusted to their final, reduced difficulty state," which makes them friendlier to fresh 70s in quest and normal-dungeon gear.
- Badges no longer come only from heroics. Every boss in Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman, plus Kazzak and Doomwalker, now drops Badges of Justice. G'eras in Shattrath also sells new items for badges, Nether Vortex among them.
- Still not live: Magisters' Terrace, the 16th heroic dungeon. In original TBC it came with the Sunwell patch and was unlocked by a quest chain, not a rep key. Blizzard hasn't dated that phase for Anniversary.
- Fastest route now: hit 70 → quest and run normals to Honored → buy keys → heroics + Karazhan for badges. A power-leveling boost skips the longest step. A heroic key boost skips the rep.
What changed for heroic keys on October 22?
The Zul'Aman phase was also a catch-up patch, and heroics got the biggest change. The official "Gods of Zul'Aman Now Live" notes (news.blizzard.com) list four changes that matter for anyone gearing a new 70:
| Change (Oct 22, 2026) | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Heroic key reputation | Revered | Honored |
| Heroic dungeon tuning | Launch difficulty | Final, reduced difficulty |
| Badge of Justice sources | Mainly heroic bosses + the heroic daily | Also every boss in Kara, Gruul, Mag, SSC, TK, ZA + Kazzak and Doomwalker |
| Hyjal / Black Temple entry | Attunement required | No attunement |
Blizzard's own wording on the attunement change: "The Battle for Mount Hyjal and The Black Temple will no longer require attunement to enter." Zul'Aman never needed one. So for the two Phase 3 raids, the gate a fresh 70 faces is now gear, not a quest chain. That makes heroics and badges more important than before, not less.
How do you unlock heroic keys in TBC Anniversary now?
Five reputation keys cover the 15 Outland heroic dungeons, one key per cluster. The faction's quartermaster sells each key once you reach Honored. With the key on someone in the group, the party leader can set Heroic difficulty for any dungeon in that cluster.
| Heroic Key | Faction (now Honored) | Unlocks Heroic |
|---|---|---|
| Flamewrought Key | Honor Hold (Alliance) / Thrallmar (Horde) | Hellfire Ramparts, Blood Furnace, Shattered Halls |
| Reservoir Key | Cenarion Expedition | Slave Pens, Underbog, Steamvault |
| Auchenai Key | Lower City | Mana-Tombs, Auchenai Crypts, Sethekk Halls, Shadow Labyrinth |
| Warpforged Key | The Sha'tar | Mechanar, Botanica, Arcatraz |
| Key of Time | Keepers of Time | Old Hillsbrad Foothills, The Black Morass |
What that means in practice:
- Questing now covers far more of the grind. At Revered, quests ran out long before the key and the rest was dungeon spam. Honored is 9,000 rep from Neutral instead of 21,000, so the Hellfire, Zangarmarsh, Terokkar and Caverns of Time quest chains cover a much bigger share, and a handful of normal clears tops up the rest.
- Normal dungeons still build the rep, with one trap. Most normal clears give rep with the faction that sells their cluster's key. Mana-Tombs is the exception: it gives Consortium rep, so for Lower City run Auchenai Crypts, Sethekk Halls or Shadow Labyrinth.
- One character can still unlock it for your alts. Anniversary added Communal keys: account-bound copies you buy on one character and mail to an alt. A February 12, 2026 Blizzard hotfix confirms the Communal Flamewrought Key works for an alt of either faction at Friendly with Honor Hold or Thrallmar (worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com). Players report the same rule for the other four keys. The October 22 notes don't mention communal keys, so check the quartermaster on your own character.
Confirmed vs. not live: the Honored requirement is official and live (Blizzard, Oct 22). Magisters' Terrace is still locked. It is not in the Zul'Aman notes, and Blizzard has announced no Sunwell date for Anniversary. In original TBC its heroic was unlocked by a quest chain after a normal clear, not by a sixth rep key, so don't expect another quartermaster purchase.
How do Badges of Justice gear you after the Zul'Aman patch?
Badges are still the spine of fresh-70 gearing: guaranteed purchases instead of loot rolls. What changed is how many places drop them. Heroic bosses still drop one each, so a full heroic clear nets roughly 2–5 badges depending on the dungeon: Auchenai Crypts gives 2, Slave Pens 3 and Botanica 5 (warcraft.wiki.gg). The heroic daily quest adds more. On top of that, Blizzard's notes say every boss in Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman, plus Doom Lord Kazzak and Doomwalker, now drops them too. Blizzard's line: these bosses can "now drop Badges of Justice, giving you more opportunities to obtain this valuable currency."
You spend them at G'eras on the Terrace of Light in Shattrath City. Per the same announcement, he "now offers more powerful wares in exchange for Badges of Justice, including Nether Vortex." That's a big deal for crafters: Nether Vortex is the material behind many of the best crafted epics, and until now it came mostly from raids.
So the gearing loop for a fresh 70 now looks like this:
- Heroics for badges, epic and blue drops, and daily-quest badges.
- Karazhan and Gruul as soon as your gear allows. Every boss there now adds badges too, so even a pug clear that drops nothing for you still pays.
- G'eras to fill the slots RNG won't give you. Costs and the full new item list are in our Badge of Justice gear ranking for G'eras.
One thing to get right about gems: the Zul'Aman patch put the new epic jewelcrafting gems in Magtheridon's Black Sack of Gems and in Brilliant Glass, not in heroics. Heroic bosses can drop a few specific epic-quality gems, such as Fire Opal, but they aren't a source of the raw epic gems crafters cut. Our Phase 3 epic gems guide covers the gem economy.
What's the fastest fresh-70 gearing path in Phase 3.5?
Order still matters more than effort. Here's the post-patch sequence:
- Hit level 70. Nothing below matters until you're capped. This is now by far the longest step, and the one most worth compressing if your time is limited.
- Quest Outland and run normals to Honored. You upgrade your weakest slots and collect the rep for your keys at the same time. Lower City (Auchindoun) and The Sha'tar (Tempest Keep dungeons) carry a lot of strong pre-raid pieces, so start there.
- Buy your keys and switch to heroics. The final reduced tuning makes them much more forgiving for a fresh group. You still want a tank and healer who know the pulls. Every boss is a badge.
- Start raiding right away. Karazhan, Gruul and Magtheridon give badges on every boss now. Zul'Aman needs no attunement, and since October 22 neither do Hyjal and Black Temple.
- Fill gaps with BoE buys. Since October 22, Doomwalker and Kazzak loot is Bind on Equip, so gold can buy item-level 120 pieces off the Auction House.
Gearing for PvP instead? Honor gear gives instant resilience and doesn't need heroic keys at all. Arena Season 3 is still running. See the Season 3 honor-first plan. Most players do both: heroics for the PvE set, honor for resilience.
How long does the grind take now, and when is a boost worth it?
The rep side shrank a lot. Revered meant 21,000 reputation per faction from Neutral, or 105,000 across all five keys. Honored is 9,000 each, or 45,000 total. The leveling quests and normal runs you do anyway now cover much more of each key. Our estimate for a casual player: a few evenings to unlock every heroic, where it used to take a week or two of normals. Your starting rep and group luck will move that a lot.
That moves the bottleneck. Leveling to 70 is now the expensive part, especially for alts who have already seen Outland. And with Zul'Aman live and Hyjal and Black Temple open without attunement, each week you spend leveling is a week of badges and raid lockouts you miss.
- Still leveling? A TBC Anniversary power-leveling boost takes any level to 70, so you start this plan at step 2, not step 1.
- Capped but don't want even the Honored grind? A heroic key boost handles the rep and unlocks the doors, so you go straight to farming badges.
- Want raid gear now? Black Temple has no attunement anymore, so a Black Temple carry is open to any 70.
If you'd rather grind it yourself, this guide is the whole plan. Just budget gold for repairs, consumables and BoE upgrades first. See how to make gold fast in TBC Anniversary.
Gear a fresh 70 on the Anniversary realms the fast way. Skip the leveling or the rep and go straight to badges and raids:
- TBC Anniversary Power Leveling to 70 — any level → 70, piloted, fast
- Heroic Dungeon Keys Boost — every heroic unlocked, no rep grind
- Black Temple Carry — no attunement needed since Oct 22
- All WoW TBC Anniversary services — carries, keys and boosts in one place
FAQ
What reputation do you need for heroic keys in TBC Anniversary now? Honored. Since the Gods of Zul'Aman update on October 22, 2026, Blizzard's patch notes say: "The reputation requirement to purchase Heroic dungeon keys has been reduced to Honored." Before that, every key needed Revered.
How much reputation is Honored compared with Revered? From Neutral, Honored takes 9,000 reputation (3,000 to Friendly, then 6,000 to Honored). Revered took 21,000, because Honored to Revered adds another 12,000. That's about 57% less rep per key, or 45,000 instead of 105,000 for all five.
Do alts still need their own heroic keys? Not necessarily. Anniversary has Communal keys you buy on one character and mail to an alt. Blizzard confirms the Communal Flamewrought Key works at Friendly with Honor Hold or Thrallmar. Players report the same Friendly rule for the other keys, so check your quartermaster.
Is Magisters' Terrace heroic available on TBC Anniversary? Not yet. Magisters' Terrace isn't in the Zul'Aman patch. In original TBC it came with the Sunwell patch and its heroic was unlocked by a quest chain, not a rep key. Blizzard hasn't announced a date for that phase on the Anniversary realms.
Where do Badges of Justice drop now? From heroic dungeon bosses as before, and since October 22 also from every boss in Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman, plus Doom Lord Kazzak and Doomwalker. You spend them at G'eras in Shattrath, who now also sells Nether Vortex.
Did heroic dungeons get easier? Yes. Blizzard's notes say "All Heroic dungeons will be adjusted to their final, reduced difficulty state," so they are more forgiving for fresh 70s than at launch. A tank and healer who know the pulls still matter most.
