Updated October 28, 2026: reservation is now live. Added Blizzard's October 27 fix for the over-strict "That name is restricted" filter, the WOW51900337 "valid access license" error, the Oceanic Roleplay-first bug, and confirmation that Roleplay-PvP names can be reserved.

Quick answer: WoW Forever's Early Name Reservation is open now and runs through November 3, 2026. It opened October 27 at 1:00 p.m. PDT in North America and 18:00 CET in Europe. You can reserve up to three characters in total across all rulesets, Roleplay-PvP included. If a normal name says "That name is restricted", that's a confirmed Blizzard bug (it blocked anything containing "c-o-n", for example). Blizzard says the fix arrives with the next realm restart in each region, so retry after that. Reservation needs any paid upgrade, from the $29.99 Skyborne Heroic Pack up, on the exact WoW account you play. The subscription-included base game doesn't come with it.
That's the short version. Below: the restricted-name bug and what to do about it, the error codes people are hitting, how the three-character cap works, and the mistakes that cost people their name.

What do you need to know about WoW Forever name reservation right now?
- Status: live. October 27 → November 3, 2026, then launch on November 4.
- Opened: NA 1:00 p.m. PDT Oct 27 · EU 18:00 CET Oct 27 · Korea 07:00 KST Oct 28 · Taiwan 07:00 CST Oct 28 (Blizzard).
- Limit: 3 characters total across every ruleset. The cap only applies during reservation.
- Known bugs (Blizzard-confirmed, Oct 27): the restricted-name filter is too strict (fix coming with the next realm restart), and Oceanic players on Australian servers must make Roleplay/RP-PvP characters first.
- Eligible: any Forever digital upgrade or the Collector's Edition, only on the WoW account it was bought for.
- Names: two parts (first name + surname). The full combination must be unique in your region, because Forever has no realms.
Why does WoW Forever say "That name is restricted"?
Mostly because of a bug, and Blizzard has admitted it. On October 27, community manager Kaivax posted on the official forums:
"Today we've determined that we have a bug in the process that caused the game to be overly restrictive with some names. For example, it has been incorrectly restricting names containing 'c-o-n'. With the next realm restarts in each region, we're going to implement the fix." — Kaivax, Community Manager, official forums
What that means for you:
- Names like Falcon, Beacon or Iconic weren't taken. The filter matched "con" anywhere inside the name. Once your region's realms restart with the fix, Blizzard says to "feel free to try again."
- No time has been announced. Blizzard said only "the next realm restarts in each region." In the Reddit thread about the post, players testing a "con" name a few hours later found it still blocked. If yours fails, the restart hasn't happened yet.
- Write the rejected names down. Reservation is first-come, first-served, so you want your list ready the moment the fix lands.
- The filter reads both halves together. Blizzard's naming article says the system "can evaluate both parts of the name together." A blocked string that spans first name and surname can still trip it. The forums noticed this as well: one widely shared thread found letter pairs being caught across the name–surname gap.
- Some blocks are on purpose. Blizzard's list "check[s] for non-profane names that we wish to restrict, such as major Warcraft lore characters or names that are blocked for technical reasons." Players have listed lore names and title words such as "King" and "Lady" among the rejects. Blizzard hasn't published the list, so the fix won't unlock every name.
What does error WOW51900337 mean during name reservation?
The full message is "Access to this realm requires an account with a valid access license. (WOW51900337)". As the wording says, the game doesn't see a Forever access license on the WoW account you're launching.
The most likely cause is the account-binding rule in Blizzard's fine print: the reservation benefit "only applies to the specific WoW® account it was purchased for." Check these in order:
- Pick the right WoW account. If your Battle.net login has more than one game account (WoW1, WoW2…), choose the one the pack was bought for in the account dropdown above the Play button. The thread that brought this error to the forums came from a player who'd bought the Epic Pack and had played the beta on a second WoW account.
- Make sure the Game Version menu says World of Warcraft: Forever, not retail or Classic.
- If you bought only the Collector's Edition, check that its digital code was redeemed on the same WoW account you are launching.
- Still blocked? A Blizzard tech-support forum MVP has pointed affected players to a newly added Blizzard Support article. If that doesn't fix it, open a ticket with Blizzard Support, since it's an account-licence problem.
A Reddit thread on "Error creating character" is also getting replies from players with the same problem. Blizzard hasn't posted a cause for that one. Retry later, and don't spend a reservation slot on a placeholder to get around it.
Can you reserve a name on the Roleplay-PvP ruleset?
Yes. Roleplay-PvP wasn't in Forever's original ruleset list. On October 22, developer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield announced it for launch and said Blizzard was "working hard" to have it ready for reservation. It made it. Blizzard's October 27 bug notice tells players how to create characters "on Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP rulesets" during the window.
Oceanic players: there's a trap. Kaivax's separate notice the same day:
"Due to a bug, you must create any characters on Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP rulesets before creating characters on Normal or PvP rulesets. If you first create a character on the Normal or PvP ruleset, the Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP rulesets will no longer be available for subsequent characters." — Kaivax, official forums
Blizzard says this "should only be present for players in the Oceanic region who are connecting to Australian servers" and is being fixed urgently. If you're in that group and want any RP character, make it first.
How many characters can you reserve in WoW Forever?
Three in total, across every ruleset combined:
"During the reservation period, eligible players can create and reserve names for up to three characters total across all Rulesets. This means that if you create two on a PvP Ruleset, you'll only be able to create one more character in a Normal or Role-Play Ruleset. This restriction only applies to Early Name Reservation." — Blizzard, Claim Your World of Warcraft: Forever Character Names
- Plan all three slots before you start. Main plus two alts on one ruleset, or one character on each of three rulesets. You can't do both.
- The cap is temporary. After launch on November 4 you can create characters normally.
- The ruleset is the bigger commitment. Forever has no realms. You choose Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP instead. Characters can't move between rulesets, and players on different rulesets can't group, per Blizzard's ruleset article. Put your reserved characters where your friends will play. Our WoW Forever rulesets guide goes into the choice in detail.
What time did WoW Forever name reservation start?
| Region (official) | Opened | Same moment in UTC |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | Oct 27, 18:00 CET | Oct 27, 17:00 UTC |
| North America | Oct 27, 1:00 p.m. PDT | Oct 27, 20:00 UTC |
| Korea | Oct 28, 07:00 KST | Oct 27, 22:00 UTC |
| Taiwan | Oct 28, 07:00 CST (Taiwan) | Oct 27, 23:00 UTC |
All four regions are open now. Each region has its own name pool, so Europe opening three hours earlier didn't let anyone take North American names. The window closes November 3. Blizzard hasn't given a closing time, so don't leave it until the last evening. For launch-day times, Blizzard's own articles disagree on PST vs PDT for November 4. Our WoW Forever launch time in every time zone guide sorts it out.
Which pack do you need to reserve a name?
Any paid upgrade. Blizzard's fine print: "Purchase of World of Warcraft: Forever Digital Upgrade or Collector's Edition required. This benefit only applies to the specific WoW® account it was purchased for."
| Edition | Price (USD) | Name Reservation | Beta Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base game | Included with Subscription / Game Time | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| Skyborne Heroic Pack | $29.99 | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Skyborne Epic Pack | $59.99 | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (beta has ended) |
| Warcraft Forever Collection | $79.99 | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (beta has ended) |
| Collector's Edition | Blizzard Gear Store | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (beta has ended) |
- The cheapest legitimate way to reserve is the $29.99 Heroic Pack. It also comes with the Skyborne race and the Zephras Isle starting zone, per Blizzard's pre-purchase announcement.
- Bought it today? It still works. Reservation runs until November 3. If the error above shows up, check which WoW account you bought it for.
- Beta is over, so the Epic Pack's extra $30 no longer gets you early play. It still adds 30 days of Game Time and extra cosmetics. (Background: which pack included beta.)
- An Invite-A-Friend code doesn't reserve a name. Those codes grant access from November 4 to November 11. See how Invite-A-Friend launch codes work.

How do you reserve your name? (step by step)
Blizzard's checklist, in order:
- Update your graphics drivers.
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and let it update.
- Select World of Warcraft, and check you're on the WoW account that owns the upgrade.
- In the Game Version menu above Play, choose World of Warcraft: Forever, then Install.
- Click Play and choose your ruleset. Oceanic players on Australian servers: Roleplay/RP-PvP first.
- Create up to three characters with the names you want.
If a name gets "restricted", note it down and try again after your region's next realm restart. If you get WOW51900337, go back to step 3. Check the WoW Forever system requirements while the client downloads.
How do two-part names work in WoW Forever?
Every Forever character has a first name and a surname, and the complete combination must be unique within your region:
"If another player has already chosen a first name you love, that does not necessarily mean it is unavailable. What matters is the complete two-name combination." — Blizzard, Create a Name of Your Own in WoW: Forever
- "Arthas" isn't gone just because someone is "Arthas Brightvale." You can still be "Arthas Ashfall."
- Uniqueness covers the whole region. A popular full combination is gone for the entire region once someone claims it.
- You can hide the surname. Escape → Options → Nameplates → tick "My Secondary Name". It still shows in chat.
- Family names work. Blizzard's own example is Asha, Thalen and Mira Brightvale. A guild can share a surname as long as each full name is free.
What mistakes cost players their name?
- Making a PvP character before you've chosen a faction. PvP rulesets allow one faction per account, so your first PvP character sets your side. Blizzard also says it may temporarily cap one faction's character creation on PvP to keep populations balanced. Our Horde or Alliance guide can help you decide.
- Spending a slot to dodge a bug. A placeholder on the wrong ruleset can't be moved, and you only have three.
- Expecting your beta name to be held. It isn't. Beta characters don't carry over, and players are already finding their beta names taken. See does WoW Forever beta progress carry over?
- Looking for a server list. There isn't one. Forever has no realms and matches players by language.
- Treating reservation as a head start. You can't play until November 4, and everyone starts at level 1.

Is it worth buying a pack just to reserve a name?
For most players, no. With two-part names you can almost always find a clean full name at launch. It's worth it if you have a long-running name and want an exact combination on a busy ruleset, or if you were buying the Heroic Pack for the Skyborne race anyway. A reserved name gives you no competitive edge and no early access. If you're coming from Classic Era or Season of Discovery and still deciding, start with Classic+ vs Season of Discovery vs Classic Era and our launch-day checklist.
What matters once your name is locked?
After reservation, launch week is mostly about gold. Everyone starts at level 1 on November 4 in a brand-new economy, and the level-40 riding cost arrives quickly. Blizzard has not said that gold or characters carry over from Classic Era, Season of Discovery or Anniversary, so plan as if nothing does.
Names locked — still playing Classic Era until November 4? Keep your current characters moving while you wait:
- WoW Classic Era Gold: gold for your Classic Era characters until Forever launches.
- WoW Classic Era services: leveling and carry help on Classic Era.
FAQ
Is WoW Forever name reservation open now? Yes. It opened October 27 (1:00 p.m. PDT in North America, 18:00 CET in Europe) and runs through November 3, 2026.
Why does my WoW Forever name say "restricted"? Usually it's a bug Blizzard confirmed on October 27: the filter wrongly blocked names containing strings like "c-o-n". The fix arrives with the next realm restart in each region, so try again afterwards. Some lore names and other words are blocked on purpose.
What is error WOW51900337? "Access to this realm requires an account with a valid access license." The game doesn't see a Forever access license on the WoW account you're using. Check that you picked the game account the pack was bought for in the Battle.net app.
How many characters can I reserve in WoW Forever? Up to three in total across all rulesets. The limit only applies during Early Name Reservation.
Can I reserve a name on Roleplay-PvP? Yes. Roleplay-PvP is open for reservation. Oceanic players on Australian servers must create RP or RP-PvP characters before any Normal or PvP character because of a bug.
Can I reserve a name with just my subscription? No. The base game is included with a subscription or Game Time, but reservation needs an upgrade, starting with the $29.99 Skyborne Heroic Pack.
Do beta characters or names carry over? No. Beta characters don't transfer, and the beta gives no reservation priority.
