WoW Forever servers work differently from traditional World of Warcraft realms. Blizzard is removing the familiar realm-selection decision, but it is not removing every barrier between players. If your group chooses different rulesets or opposite factions, being in the same new game will not be enough to form a party.
This guide explains the confirmed rulesets, the two grouping restrictions that matter most, how surnames and language preferences fit in, and what remains unconfirmed before launch. It is based on Blizzard's published Deep Dive, checked on September 16, 2026, rather than predictions about beta behavior.
Quick answer: WoW Forever is realmless. Choose Normal, PvP or Roleplaying for your launch plans; Hardcore is coming after launch. Friends need the same ruleset and faction to group. There is no traditional server name to coordinate, but do not assume that realmless means cross-region play, unrestricted transfers or shared gold with Classic Era.
How do WoW Forever servers work without realms?
Blizzard describes each ruleset as a large ecosystem rather than a single traditional realm. The goal is to remove the pressure of picking the correct named server before you even create a character, while keeping recognizable players and communities in the world.
The most important sentence in the official Forever Deep Dive is explicit: “This is not one giant realm for everyone, and cross-ruleset grouping is not supported.” That is Blizzard's description, not a restriction inferred from another version of WoW.
Player discussion also raises a fair concern: will familiar faces survive the move away from small named realms? Blizzard says repeat encounters and recognizable communities are design goals. Whether the implementation delivers that feeling needs testing, not a pre-beta guarantee.
“Megaserver” is a convenient community shorthand, but it can hide this distinction. Forever is not one unrestricted global lobby where every character can join every other character. You still choose the kind of world you want to inhabit, and that choice affects who can play alongside you.
For a returning guild, the practical change is straightforward: replace the old “Which server are we rolling on?” discussion with “Which ruleset and faction are we choosing?” Keep your existing regional planning too. The announcement does not establish that friends on different game regions can suddenly play together.
The broader positioning matters as well. Forever is a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW, not a promise that all those versions now share characters. Our Forever vs Classic Era, Retail and Season of Discovery comparison covers that distinction in more detail.
Which WoW Forever ruleset should your group choose?
Blizzard names four rulesets overall, but describes Hardcore as available after launch. Do not read a four-item feature list as four simultaneously available launch choices. For the November 4 launch, plan around Normal, PvP and Roleplaying unless Blizzard updates that schedule.
| Ruleset | Official description in practical terms | Best planning question |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Cooperative baseline; PvP requires mutual consent | Does everyone want control over participating in PvP? |
| PvP | Contested territory brings additional world conflict | Does everyone accept open-world PvP as part of ordinary travel? |
| Roleplaying | A community for players who want to inhabit the fantasy | Does everyone actually want a roleplaying-focused environment? |
| Hardcore | A later challenge where death has lasting consequences | Are you planning a future Hardcore group rather than a launch group? |
When is Normal the sensible choice?
Normal is the clearest recommendation for a mixed group where some people enjoy occasional PvP and others chiefly want quests, professions and dungeons. The confirmed distinction is consent: Blizzard says PvP on Normal requires mutual consent.
That does not mean Normal removes challenge, changes dungeon difficulty, or guarantees uninterrupted questing. None of those claims follows from the ruleset description. It means the group does not have to accept the PvP ruleset's contested-world experience just because one member enjoys fighting other players.
When should everyone commit to PvP?
Choose PvP when the whole group wants world conflict to remain part of exploration and travel. Discuss the ordinary evening, not only the exciting launch-day battle: would everyone still want this ruleset when they are trying to finish a quest or reach a dungeon?
Blizzard also says it intends to support Horde–Alliance balance with systems similar to the Season of Discovery approach. That is a design intention, not a published guarantee of exact faction ratios, zero queues or unrestricted character creation at every moment. Avoid choosing a faction on the assumption that no balancing limits can ever affect it.
What makes Roleplaying different?
Roleplaying is for players who actively want a like-minded roleplaying community. It is not simply another server label to select because the other options sound crowded. Treat the community purpose seriously when agreeing on it with friends, and check the final in-game rules when character creation becomes available.
Do not assume a separate RP-PvP option exists. The cited announcement names Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore; it does not provide an additional hybrid ruleset to plan around.
Can friends on different rulesets or factions group together?
No cross-ruleset grouping is supported, and Horde and Alliance remain separate. Both conditions matter independently. Matching a ruleset does not override the faction restriction, and matching a faction does not override the ruleset restriction.
| Your characters | Can you plan to group? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Same ruleset, same faction, otherwise compatible accounts | Yes | Blizzard explicitly supports grouping, dungeons and raids within that setup |
| Normal and PvP, both Horde | No | Different rulesets |
| Both Normal, one Horde and one Alliance | No | Faction grouping restriction |
| Hardcore and Normal | No | Hardcore is a separate ecosystem |
| Same ruleset and faction, different game regions | Not established by this announcement | Realmless does not itself confirm cross-region grouping |
Consider a simple three-friend example. Two friends create Alliance characters on Normal, while the third chooses Horde on Normal. They agreed on the ruleset but not on faction, so they have not solved their grouping problem. If the third instead makes an Alliance character on PvP, the faction now matches but the ruleset does not.
The fix is planning both choices before creation, not buying a more expensive edition. The announced upgrade packs are not described as a way to bypass grouping boundaries. A purchase decision and a community decision are separate questions.
For Skyborne characters, faction planning deserves particular attention. Blizzard's What's Next recap says players choose Horde or Alliance at creation, with faction affecting available class options. Use our new race and class combinations guide as a starting point, then confirm the exact combination before your group commits.
Can you change rulesets later or leave Hardcore after dying?
The clear transfer example in the Deep Dive concerns a dead Hardcore character: that character can move to another ruleset, including PvP. This does not make Hardcore a reversible difficulty toggle.
Blizzard explains the direction of shared progress separately. Hardcore accomplishments can become available outside Hardcore, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore. That separation protects Hardcore's enclosed ecosystem.
Do not extrapolate this into a complete transfer chart. The cited recap does not establish every Normal-to-PvP or PvP-to-Normal transfer condition, fee, cooldown or restriction. Community descriptions of how transfers “must” work are not a substitute for published service rules.
For planning purposes, make a choice your friends are willing to keep. “We will switch later” is a weak foundation until Blizzard publishes the exact switch you intend to use. Likewise, do not schedule a November 4 Hardcore guild launch: Hardcore is described as coming after launch, and this guide does not assign it an unconfirmed release day.
How do surnames and language preferences affect finding friends?
Characters will use two-part names, similar to a first name and surname. Blizzard says names will be unique per region, giving players more room to create an identity without relying on traditional realm labels.
Agree on how you will share your complete character names. A first-name-only list can create needless confusion when the game explicitly uses a two-part identity. Do not assume the announcement guarantees a particular naming reservation outcome, or that buying a pack makes a chosen name available regardless of other players.
Language preference is another part of the realmless design. Blizzard says players can choose a preference and encounter other players who share it. That is useful for finding people you can comfortably communicate with during quests and group content.
Blizzard's language-preference preview, reproduced from the official Deep Dive. Interface details shown before release may change.
A language preference is not the same thing as choosing a geographic game region. Selecting English does not establish a bridge between every English-speaking account worldwide. Nor does the announcement promise that language preference is a hard barrier preventing encounters with anyone else.
Use it as a communication setting, not as evidence for an undocumented account-migration feature. For an international group, confirm regional compatibility through official account information before spending money or reserving names.
What progress is shared, and does Classic Era gold carry over?
Within Forever, Blizzard describes collections and Legacy Points as account-wide across rulesets, with the one-way Hardcore exception discussed above. That is a statement about those systems, not a general promise that inventories, gold, auction houses and all character progress are merged.
The Legacy system illustrates why the distinction matters. At launch, each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points, while players can earn up to 65 through challenges. Shared points are spent separately by each character. An account-wide progression currency therefore does not mean all characters become interchangeable or can ignore their ruleset's grouping boundaries. These numbers and limits come from the official Deep Dive.
There is also no basis in that recap for saying your Classic Era gold or existing Era character carries into Forever. Do not buy, farm or bank Era gold on the assumption that “realmless” turns it into Forever starting capital. The same caution applies to Season of Discovery and Anniversary characters.
Our earlier Classic+ gold and character carryover explainer records the pre-announcement question. Read it as historical background: Blizzard has now announced Forever, but that does not validate every old theory about transfers.
If you continue playing Era while waiting, treat that as its own activity and budget. Resources used there should make sense for your Era goals even if none of them ever move into Forever.

What should your group decide before beta and launch?
Use a short written checklist rather than a guessed server list. Blizzard's purchase announcement dates beta access from September 17 and launch on November 4, 2026. As of this guide's September 16 check, beta has not started; this is an announcement-based planning guide, not a report of hands-on results.
For beta scope, Icy Veins reports Blizzard developer Clay Stone's interview as an initial level-20 cap, rising to level 30 after a couple of weeks. That is an attributed interview report, not a claim that level 30 is available on the first beta day. Do not plan on testing the entire level-60 game during beta.
- Agree on your ruleset. Pick Normal, PvP or Roleplaying for launch planning; keep future Hardcore plans separate.
- Agree on faction. Write Horde or Alliance next to the ruleset so nobody treats it as an afterthought.
- Check region compatibility. Do not substitute a language preference for an account-region check.
- Check race and class choices. Verify that every desired combination exists and fits the agreed faction.
- Share full character identities. Plan around the two-part naming system, not an old realm-and-first-name convention.
- Separate access purchases from group setup. The Heroic Pack does not include beta access; check our beta access guide before buying an upgrade for testing.
- Recheck the official rules before creating characters. Pay particular attention to any newly published transfer or regional restrictions.
This gives your group decisions it can act on now without pretending that launch queues, population sizes or long-term faction balance are already measurable. Those are things to evaluate when Blizzard publishes more detail and the game can actually be tested.
FAQ
Does WoW Forever have a server list? Blizzard says Forever is realmless: you choose a ruleset rather than a traditional named realm. That does not mean every player can group with every other player.
Can Normal and PvP players run a dungeon together? No. Blizzard explicitly says cross-ruleset grouping is not supported. Choose the same ruleset if you intend to quest, run dungeons and raid together.
Can Horde and Alliance friends group in Forever? No. Faction grouping restrictions remain, including when both characters choose the same ruleset.
Can I move my Hardcore character after it dies? Blizzard says a dead Hardcore character can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. That is not a reversible toggle, and progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore.
Are Forever character names unique worldwide? Blizzard describes two-part names as unique per region. It does not describe one worldwide namespace or use this feature to announce cross-region grouping.
Does realmless mean my Classic Era gold carries over? No such conclusion follows from the announcement. Shared Forever collections and Legacy Points do not establish a transfer route for Era gold or characters.
