Quick Answer

  • The Z84M is the best LMG in Battlefield 6 for Season 5 if you can handle its recoil. On Battlefinity's data it has the fastest time to kill in the class at every range it lists: 167 ms up close, 266 ms at mid range and 441 ms at long range, with a 100-round box.
  • The KTS100 MK8 is the easiest LMG to control. EA's own numbers give it 9.5 degrees of recoil variation, against a class average of about 29.5 degrees, and it ties for the fastest bullet at 808 m/s. It kills slowly, though: 350 ms up close.
  • Controller players lost more than half their recoil assist in 2.1.1.0. EA cut gamepad recoil compensation from 11% to 5%, so low-recoil guns gained value on console.
  • The L110 is still the best LMG you own from Career Rank 1. The M240L and M121 A2 are the fastest close-range killers you can get without the Season 5 Battle Pass.
  • EA has never published an LMG tier list. The ranking below combines EA's recoil numbers, Battlefinity's damage tables and what each gun costs to unlock.

What Changed for LMGs in Season 5?

Season 5 launched with Update 2.1.1.0 on 13 October. In the official 2.1.1.0 notes, EA describes the new gun as "A belt-fed Light Machine Gun built to dominate at close range. With a 100-round capacity and support for a wide selection of attachments, the Z84M is ready to sustain pressure across the battlefield."

There was no direct LMG balance pass. Four smaller changes still matter:

  • One new gun. The Z84M is the only LMG among the four Season 5 weapons. The others are the Mk 24, RSPR and ELR-40.
  • Less recoil help on controllers. In EA's words: "Reduced recoil compensation for gamepad input from 11% to 5%." This applies to every weapon, not only LMGs, and it is a multiplayer change, not just a REDSEC one.
  • An optic fix that makes three LMGs look kickier. "The SU-230 LPVO no longer incorrectly reduces visual recoil on the following weapons: M433, GRT-BC, M123K, M250, M121A2, M417A2." If you ran that optic on the M123K, M250 or M121 A2, the extra kick you see is the fix, not a nerf.
  • REDSEC armor breakpoints. In Battle Royale only, the KTS100 Mk8, M123k and L110 (5.56x45mm) and the RPK-74M (5.45x39mm) "now take an additional bullet to kill vs armor past 46m." EA called the KTS100 out by name as one of the weapons "at the forefront of highlighting this issue." None of this applies to normal multiplayer. Every bullet-to-kill change is in our Season 5 weapon balance breakdown.

Our read on point 2: a recoil assist cut hurts most on guns with the most recoil to begin with. That pushes console players toward the KTS100 MK8 and RPK-74M and away from the M123K and M250.

How Many LMGs Are in Battlefield 6?

There are ten LMGs in Season 5. EA's loadout and weapon classes page still lists nine and had not added the Z84M when we checked on 19 October. EA's description of the class:

"The Signature Support Weapon is built for laying down fully-automatic suppressing fire: sustained trigger pulls down range that cause hesitation at a minimum, and lethal damage at a maximum."

How to unlock the Z84M: EA has not published the full Season 5 tier list. Third-party guide sites report it as a free reward at Tier 11 of the Fate's Reckoning path, which you can pick after you finish the Recruit Path. Our Z84M guide explains the unlock in full and covers its build.

Battlefield 6 Best LMG Ranked: Time to Kill at Every Range

EA does not publish damage or time-to-kill numbers, so this table uses Battlefinity's multiplayer data, checked 19 October. TTK assumes chest hits at three range bands: 0 to 20 m, 20 to 75 m and 75 m plus.

LMGRPMTTK 0-20 mTTK 20-75 mTTK 75 m+Chest hits to kill up close

KTS100 MK8514350 ms475 ms660 ms4
RPK-74M685350 ms446 ms689 ms5

What the table shows:

  • The class splits into two damage groups. The Z84M, M121 A2, M240L and M/60 deal 35 damage per chest hit up close and kill in three hits. The M123K, DRS-IAR, L110, M250 and KTS100 MK8 deal 26 and need four. The RPK-74M deals 20.6 and needs five.
  • Limb hits cost a bullet. Battlefinity lists stomach and limb hits at 29.8 on the 35-damage guns, so those guns need four limb hits instead of three chest hits. The 26-damage guns need five limb hits instead of four.
  • Up close, headshots don't save the 35-damage guns a bullet. Two headshots do 98.6 damage, so the kill still takes three hits. On the 26-damage guns, three headshots kill instead of four chest hits.
  • The M250 is the exception. Battlefinity lists one 267 ms value for it and no damage drop-off. If that holds at range, it is the fastest LMG past 75 m. The tracker has not confirmed that, so treat it as unproven.

How Hard Is Each LMG to Control?

Fast kills do not help if your shots miss. EA's last published recoil numbers are in Update 1.3.3.0, where EA said: "We've reduced recoil variation across the arsenal to make weapon behavior more predictable and controllable."

The two tables point in opposite directions. The Z84M has the lowest control rating in the class and the fastest kills. The KTS100 MK8 controls best and is among the slowest to kill. Everything else is a trade-off between those two.

Which LMG Should You Use in Season 5?

Our tiers, based on the two tables above:

  • S: Z84M. It wins the fight in all three range bands. The costs are the lowest control in the class, a 6.7-second reload and slow aim-down-sights. One player who says they mastered it to level 51 summed up the reload: "I mastered it to lvl 51 and I can confirm the reload takes 3 to 5 business days." Another called it "a TR7 with a 100mag and no recoil". The damage part is accurate; the TR-7 comparison is checked in our Z84M guide. The "no recoil" part only holds with a full attachment build.
  • S: KTS100 MK8. The pick for controller players, long lanes and anyone who misses a lot of shots. It is slow to kill, but at 9.5 degrees of recoil it lands nearly everything it fires.
  • A: M240L. Three chest hits up close and a 4.25-second reload, more than two seconds quicker than any of the 100-round guns. Its base magazine is 50 rounds, not 100, which players often get wrong.
  • A: M121 A2. Second-fastest kill up close at 183 ms. Its 560 m/s bullet is the slowest in the class, so it is a building and objective gun.
  • A: M123K. 830 rpm and 100 rounds, but it has the worst recoil variation in the class at 47.7 degrees. On our read, that makes it the LMG the controller assist cut hurts most.
  • B: L110. The best gun you don't have to unlock. It has the fastest bullet of any 100-round LMG at 740 m/s and a control rating of 54, behind only the M/60 among the 100-round guns.
  • B: M250 and RPK-74M. The M250 depends on the unconfirmed no-drop-off data. The RPK-74M handles well, but it needs five chest hits even up close.
  • C: DRS-IAR and M/60. The DRS-IAR's 30-round magazine undercuts the point of an LMG. The M/60 has the lowest mobility rating and the longest reload in the class, at 7.35 seconds.

What Are the Best LMG Attachments?

Every loadout has a fixed budget of attachment points, so an LMG build is a spending decision. EA has never published a baseline cost table. Point costs you see on tracker sites are third-party.

Spend your points in this order:

  • Recoil control. Use an angled grip. This matters even more on controller since 2.1.1.0. Players also pair it with a handstop to offset the slow LMG draw speed.
  • Barrel. Players often recommend a light barrel on the L110.
  • Optic. If you use the SU-230 LPVO on the M123K, M250 or M121 A2, expect more visible kick after the 2.1.1.0 fix.
  • Ammo. Only if you have points left. Update 1.3.3.0 raised bullet drag by 40% on all weapons, and by 100% with Match Grade ammo, which hurts at LMG ranges.
  • Magazine. Last on most guns. The exception is a 50-round gun like the M240L when you are holding a lane.

On the Z84M, every one of Battlefinity's top builds uses the 100RND Canvas Pouch at weapon level 30. That means its best build is a long way past the Battle Pass unlock.

If an attachment shows as earned but doesn't appear in the customisation screen, that is a known issue and not a build mistake. See our guide to attachments not unlocking.

How Do You Level LMGs Faster?

Battlefield 6 runs three separate XP tracks:

  • Career XP unlocks guns through Career Rank 50. It gates the DRS-IAR at 9, the M/60 at 20, the M123K at 38 and the M250 at 46.
  • Hardware XP is earned per weapon and unlocks that gun's attachments. This is why a Career Rank 50 player can still have a bare L110.
  • Battle Pass XP is earned at the same rate as Career XP. It is your route to the Z84M.

There is a time limit worth using right now. EA's 16 October post on Steam extended the Steam Free Trial to Tuesday 20 October at 5 PM UTC and "the 2x XP weekend to Tuesday as well". EA gave no separate end time for the 2x XP, so plan around the trial's 5 PM UTC cutoff. EA says: "Level up your Career Rank, your weapons and unlock the Battle Pass Tiers even quicker!" Our XP boost guide explains how that multiplier stacks with others.

There is a catch. Since Season 5, players have reported a cap on weapon XP per minute. We cover the evidence in our guide to the 300 XP per minute weapon limit. If the cap is real, farming harder in a short session won't level a gun faster. Spreading your play over more sessions will.

Are LMGs Good in Battlefield 6 Right Now?

They are good at close and mid range in Season 5. Before the Z84M, no LMG killed in under 180 ms up close. The Z84M does it in 167 ms, the same as the TR-7 assault rifle, which is why it showed up in lobbies so quickly. Not everyone is happy about that. As one r/Battlefield reply put it: "Another 3btk weapon... In tired boss..."

They still have weaknesses. LMGs have some of the slowest handling in the game, and Battlefield 6's maps reward moving between positions. If you move around a lot, an assault rifle will usually serve you better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best LMG in Battlefield 6 Season 5? The Z84M if you can control it. On Battlefinity's data it kills fastest at every range it lists: 167 ms up close, 266 ms at mid range and 441 ms at long range. If you play on controller or struggle with recoil, use the KTS100 MK8. It has EA's lowest LMG recoil variation at 9.5 degrees.

How many LMGs are in Battlefield 6? Ten as of Season 5: the L110, DRS-IAR, M/60, M123K, M250, KTS100 MK8, M240L, M121 A2, RPK-74M and the new Z84M. EA's weapon roster page still lists nine because it has not added the Z84M yet.

How do you unlock the Z84M? Third-party guide sites report it as a free reward at Tier 11 of the Fate's Reckoning path in the Season 5 Battle Pass, after you finish the Recruit Path. EA has not published the full tier list.

Did Season 5 nerf LMGs? Not directly. Update 2.1.1.0 cut gamepad recoil compensation from 11% to 5% for every weapon and fixed an SU-230 LPVO bug on three LMGs. In REDSEC only, four LMGs need one more bullet against armored players past 46 meters.

What is the best LMG for beginners? The L110. It is unlocked by default, carries 100 rounds and has the fastest bullet of any 100-round LMG at 740 m/s.

Does the M240L have a 100-round magazine? No. Its base magazine is 50 rounds. The LMGs with 100-round base magazines are the Z84M, L110, M123K and M/60.
