With two weeks to go, r/GTA6 has moved from "when does it come out" to "when can I download it". A post pointing out that next week is the last full week without GTA 6 passed 4,000 upvotes in a day. The answer changed on November 3: Rockstar moved the preload up, and anyone still planning around November 12 is two days behind. Below: the confirmed times for every major region, what is still unclear, and a checklist so launch night isn't a progress bar.
When does GTA 6 preload start?
November 10, 2026. Rockstar's Newswire post titled "Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Load Begins on November 10" set the date, and Rockstar Support's Pre-Load FAQ (last updated November 3, 2026) spells out how it works on each console:
"On PlayStation 5, digital pre-load begins at midnight local time in your respective time zone on November 10, 2026." (Rockstar Games Customer Support)
On Xbox, the same FAQ says digital pre-load begins globally at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, 2026, one moment for every region.
The official GTA VI page now reads "Pre-Load Begins November 10" above the November 19 release banner.

Is GTA 6 a 7-day preload or 9 days?
It is 9 days. "7 day pre load" was the right answer until November 3. Earlier pre-order messaging paired the preload with the November 12 retail date, exactly one week before launch, so "GTA 6 7 day pre load" became one of the most-searched preload questions. Rockstar then moved digital preload up to November 10.
Two things haven't changed:
- Preloading does not let you play early. The files download locked and open at the November 19 unlock. Nobody plays before launch on any edition; see our GTA 6 early access explainer.
- Standard and Ultimate preload at the same time. No edition gets an extra preload head start. The edition difference is in-game content, covered in Ultimate vs Standard.
What time does GTA 6 preload start in my time zone?
PS5 opens at midnight in your own region. Xbox opens at one global moment, so US Xbox players get it on Monday evening. IGN published this region table from Rockstar's announcement:

One thing to watch in the US: Rockstar's FAQ says PS5 preload starts at "midnight local time", but IGN's table lists the West Coast at 9pm PT on November 9, which is midnight Eastern. That would mean US PlayStation accounts open on Eastern time. If you're on Pacific, Mountain or Central time, check your PS5 game library from 9pm PT / 11pm CT on Monday. How big is the GTA 6 preload?
Up to 212 GB. Rockstar's Newswire states it directly:
"The pre-load file will require up to 212 GB depending on your device, so make sure you've got ample space to begin pre-loading as soon as possible." (Rockstar Newswire, November 3, 2026)
"Depending on your device" means the number differs between PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S. Clear more than the download itself, because consoles need working room to install. Download time at 212 GB, before console overhead:

How do I make GTA 6 preload automatically?
Rockstar's FAQ lists two requirements per console. Get them wrong and the preload sits idle until you notice:
- PS5: auto-downloads enabled, and the console on or in Rest Mode (not fully off).
- Xbox Series X/S: automatic updates enabled, and the console on or in Sleep mode.

Can you preload the physical copy of GTA 6?
Yes, but not until you have the box, and boxes "should" arrive from November 12. The retail version is code-in-box: no game disc. You redeem the code and download the same files as digital buyers. Rockstar's wording:
"Code-in-box versions for both consoles should be available from retailers beginning November 12." (Rockstar Newswire, November 3, 2026)

I haven't pre-ordered yet. Can I still preload?
Yes. Buy the digital version on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store any time from November 10 and it starts downloading straight away. Pre-orders have been open since June 25 at $79.99 (Standard) and $99.99 (Ultimate) in the US. A r/GTA6 thread this week asked exactly this: with preload days away, is it worth buying Standard or Ultimate? Timing doesn't decide it, because both editions preload and unlock at the same moment. The choice is only about whether you want the extra in-game items.

What time does GTA 6 unlock on November 19?
IGN reports Rockstar confirmed a local-midnight launch on November 19 on both consoles, with the same US pattern as the PS5 preload: 9pm PT on November 18 = 12am ET on November 19. Is there a PC preload for GTA 6?
No. GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, a PC date or a PC pre-order, so nothing in this guide applies to PC. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both reached PC well after their console launches, which is why a PC version is widely expected, but that is a pattern, not an announcement. Status: GTA 6 PC release.

- Now: clear space. Plan for more than 212 GB free, more on a Series S.
- Now: turn on auto-downloads (PS5) or automatic updates (Xbox), and set the power mode to Rest Mode or Sleep, not off.

- Nov 12 onward (physical buyers): redeem the code as soon as the box arrives.
