On October 20, 2026, Arrowhead shipped Devoid of Liberty 7.2.0 and swapped Helldivers 2's anti-cheat on PC from nProtect GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). For most players nothing changed. For a loud minority the game stopped launching overnight: an 0xc0000142 error, a message asking them to "unload" a driver they've never heard of, a crash right after the intro cinematic, or a Steam Deck that suddenly refuses to boot the game. This guide collects the official facts and the fixes that have worked for players so far, ordered from simplest to most involved, and is current for patch 7.2.0 plus the 7.2.1 hotfix of October 22, 2026.
Quick answer: For 0xc0000142, Arrowhead says a Windows Restart (not Shut down) is the main fix. Its full checklist, in order: purge every mod file (ReShade and OptiScaler included), delete the Helldivers2 folder in %appdata%\Arrowhead, run GGuninst.exe from the game's EasyAntiCheat folder, delete any leftover bin\GameGuard folder, update drivers and Windows, Restart, then verify game files in Steam. Still broken? Delete the bin and data folders and verify again. If you see "Please unload DBUtilDrv2.sys", remove that Dell driver with Dell's official DBUtil Removal Utility. On Steam Deck or Linux, back up and rename steamapps/compatdata/553850, then verify files.
Updated October 30, 2026: this guide now follows Arrowhead's official troubleshooting article and covers hotfix 7.2.2. The error didn't stop with that patch: on the day 7.2.2 shipped, u/Cold_Ad_2160 posted a screenshot on r/helldivers2 of "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)".

What changed in Helldivers 2 patch 7.2.0?
Patch 7.2.0 headlined three things: Easy Anti-Cheat, the Scope of Authority Warbond, and a weapon/stratagem balance pass. In the patch notes the anti-cheat change is a single line: "Implemented Easy Anti-Cheat, with additional security tools in place to enhance its effectiveness and improve game integrity protection." (Steam patch notes, 7.2.0)
Arrowhead explained why in a separate post the same morning, "Changing anti-cheat in HELLDIVERS 2". The key line from its FAQ: "The implementation of GameGuard for HELLDIVERS 2 wasn't as effective as it could have been, and in the end we decided to take another path with EAC." The studio adds that EAC "is an industry standard used in over 200 games", that the switch brings no new hardware requirements, and that Steam Deck and Linux compatibility "remains unchanged."
Here's what that means for you in practice:
| What changed | When | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| GameGuard replaced by Easy Anti-Cheat | 7.2.0, Oct 20, 2026 | Old GameGuard files can conflict with EAC and block the launch |
| Extra anti-tamper "security tools" | 7.2.0, Oct 20, 2026 | Mods that change gameplay for other players may stop working |
| 10 crash fixes + DirectX 12 stability work | 7.2.0, Oct 20, 2026 | Upscaler grey screens and resolution-switch crashes are fixed |
| Crash when a player joins or leaves the squad | 7.2.1, Oct 22, 2026 | Mid-mission crashes when someone drops in or out are patched |
| "Fixed a rare crash on boot" and a rare renderer crash on PC and Xbox | 7.2.2, Oct 29, 2026 | Update first, but 0xc0000142 can still need the steps below |
| No new hardware requirements | Official FAQ | Your PC didn't suddenly become "too old" |
One important correction: older Helldivers 2 crash guides, including our own Helldivers 2 crashing on launch fix from September, tell you to rebuild GameGuard. As of 7.2.0 that advice is obsolete. The game no longer uses GameGuard, so you want it gone, not reinstalled. The old GameGuard error codes (Error 114 and Error 360) also belong to the old anti-cheat. If you still see one after updating, your install hasn't fully moved over to EAC.
Why won't Helldivers 2 launch after the Easy Anti-Cheat update?
Arrowhead's support team and the player reports we reviewed since October 20 point to six likely causes:
- Leftover mod files. Arrowhead's first step targets these. Uninstalling a mod can leave files behind, and that includes ReShade and OptiScaler.
- GameGuard leftovers. GameGuard ran at kernel level, so its folder or driver can linger after the switch. Arrowhead tells players to remove it, and the most-shared Steam thread on the error blames a leftover folder that "is trying to load it every time you launch."
- A blocked or "vulnerable" driver. EAC refuses to start while certain drivers with known security holes are loaded. The one players are hitting right now is Dell's DBUtilDrv2.sys.
- A broken EAC service install. The patch installs the EAC service; if that step was interrupted or blocked, the game can't start it.
- Stale settings and corrupted files after a large patch: the Arrowhead AppData folder or a damaged game file.
- Platforms EAC doesn't support out of the box: some cloud-gaming services and some custom Proton/DXVK setups.
How do I fix the Helldivers 2 0xc0000142 error after the anti-cheat change?
Start with Arrowhead's checklist. Arrowhead says these steps "often fix main issues that players are currently experiencing" while it works on "a fuller fix". Only move past Fix 2 if they fail.
Fix 1: Run Arrowhead's official checklist
These steps come from Arrowhead's support article, in Arrowhead's order.
- Purge your mods. If you have ever installed mods, even ones you later removed, use your mod manager's Purge Mods function. Arrowhead warns that uninstalling alone can leave files in place.
- Remove ReShade and OptiScaler files. In \Steam\steamapps\common\Helldivers 2\bin, delete dxgi.dll, d3d9.dll, d3d11.dll, reshade32.dll and reshade64.dll if they are there.
- Clear the AppData folder. Paste %appdata%\Arrowhead\ into the Windows Run box and delete the Helldivers2 folder. You'll lose local settings such as key binds and graphics options. Your progression is tied to your account, not to this folder.
- Remove GameGuard. In Steam, right-click HELLDIVERS 2 → Manage → Browse local files, open the EasyAntiCheat folder and run GGuninst.exe. If anything is left in bin\GameGuard, delete that whole GameGuard folder.
- Update your system. Install any Windows updates and make sure all your drivers are current.
- Restart your PC. Arrowhead's wording: "Please ensure you are clicking 'restart' and not shut down, as these are different!" It adds: "This is also the main fix for any 0xc0000142 error!"
- Verify the game, then launch. In Steam, open HELLDIVERS 2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, let it finish, and start the game.
Fix 2: Delete the bin and data folders, then verify
This is Arrowhead's second-stage fix.
- In Steam, right-click HELLDIVERS 2 → Manage → Browse local files.
- Delete the bin and data folders.
- Back in Steam, open Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam downloads the missing files again, which can take a while.
- Launch the game.
Fix 3: Turn off Windows Fast Startup
If the error comes back after you power off, Windows Fast Startup may be why. Microsoft documents that with Fast Startup on, "Shut down" hibernates the kernel session, drivers included, and only Restart starts a fresh one. One r/Helldivers player who had already tried every other fix on this list only got the game working after disabling it. Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Change settings that are currently unavailable, untick Turn on fast startup, then restart.
Fix 4: Repair the Easy Anti-Cheat service
- Open your Helldivers 2 install folder again (Manage → Browse local files).
- Find the EasyAntiCheat folder (it sits inside the install folder; check the bin folder if you don't see it at the top level).
- Right-click EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe → Run as administrator. If a setup window opens, choose Repair (or Install if that's the only option).
- Restart and launch the game.
Some players report the installer window never appearing. If that happens to you, move on to Fix 5.
Fix 5: Repair Windows system files
A damaged Windows system file can trigger the same 0xc0000142 code. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow. On the main r/Helldivers thread about the error, this was the step that finally worked for some players after deleting GameGuard alone wasn't enough.
Fix 6: Remove old launch options
If you ever added --use-d3d11 or other custom launch options (Steam → Properties → General), remove them. Patch 7.2.0 specifically lists "Improved DirectX 12 stability", and the DirectX 11 launch flag has been linked to crashes since well before the anti-cheat change. A stuttering and FPS drops fix is a better approach than forcing DX11.
Still broken? Send Arrowhead the crash dump
If the game still won't launch and a crash report handler offers to create a memory dump, Arrowhead asks you to open a Player Support ticket and attach that dump.
What does "Please unload DBUtilDrv2.sys before starting the game" mean?
This is Easy Anti-Cheat refusing to start because a vulnerable driver is loaded. DBUtilDrv2.sys is a Dell driver that ships with Dell firmware-update and support tools. Dell itself published security advisories (DSA-2021-088 and DSA-2021-152) about the vulnerable versions. One player hit it on day two and asked why Helldivers 2 was "special" when another EAC game ran fine. The honest answer: blocked-driver behaviour can differ between EAC games and between EAC versions, and Helldivers 2's setup currently blocks this one.
The fix:
- Download the DBUtil Removal Utility from Dell's official support site.
- Run it. Dell says it detects and removes dbutil_2_3.sys and versions 2.5 and 2.6 of DBUtilDrv2.sys, the vulnerable ones.
- Restart and launch the game.
Some players report that simply renaming the driver file got them in. Dell's tool is the clean, supported way to do it, and it also closes a real security hole on your PC.
Does Helldivers 2 still work on Steam Deck and Linux with Easy Anti-Cheat?
Yes, officially. Arrowhead's FAQ answer is direct: "Yes, you can still play. Steam Deck and Linux compatibility remains unchanged." Still, some Steam Deck and Linux players couldn't launch after 7.2.0, and several blamed GameGuard files the patcher didn't fully remove. What players report has worked:
- Reset the Proton prefix: the steamapps/compatdata/553850 folder is the game's private Windows environment under Proton. It holds local config and any leftover GameGuard files. Back it up, rename it so Steam builds a fresh one, then verify files in Steam. A Debian 13 player reported the game starting, running smoothly and no longer crashing across three missions after doing this together with switching to GE-Proton.
- Full clean reinstall: one Steam Deck owner had to uninstall the game, delete all leftover local folders, and reinstall before it would boot.
- DXVK / DX11 overrides: players who forced DXVK or DX11 before the switch are still testing whether it works with EAC. Go back to the default first, and only experiment once the game launches.
Can I play Helldivers 2 on cloud gaming after the EAC switch?
Right now, possibly not. Since 7.2.0, cloud-gaming players have been posting that the game no longer works for them. One Boosteroid player reports launching the game only to crash about a minute later on the Super Destroyer, and points to leftover anti-cheat files on the provider's virtual machines. As of October 30, 2026 we found no official Arrowhead statement on cloud gaming, and nothing you can fix yourself: the files sit on the provider's machines, not yours. Report it to your provider and to Arrowhead support on Zendesk, and keep an eye on the official @helldivers2 account for a fix.

Why does Helldivers 2 crash when someone joins or leaves my squad?
That was a real bug, and hotfix 7.2.1 (October 22, 2026) fixed it. The full patch note reads: "Fixed a crash that would occur when another player joined or left the squad." Arrowhead called it "one of the main crashes we have seen." If you were crashing mid-mission when a random dropped in from SOS, or right as a teammate quit before extraction, update to the latest patch first. Steam usually updates automatically, but restarting the client forces it.
Patch 7.2.2 (October 29, 2026) then added fixes for a rare crash on boot and a rare renderer crash on PC and Xbox. If crashes at extraction continue on 7.2.2, work through Fixes 1, 2 and 5 above. Also check Arrowhead's Known Issues page on Zendesk, which every patch note links to. For join problems that aren't crashes, such as failed invites or friends who can't connect, see our matchmaking not working fix. For login queues, use the servers at capacity fix.
Will Easy Anti-Cheat break my Helldivers 2 mods?
It depends on the mod. Arrowhead says the change means "some mods, particularly the types that are affecting the experience of other players, may no longer function", and that "some non-malicious cosmetic mods may require updates from their individual creators." The studio also says it won't vouch for any mod: "Using mods is done at your own discretion, and so we cannot determine what's safe vs. unsafe to use."
Two practical takeaways:
- Remove all mods before you troubleshoot. A mod that no longer works under EAC is one of the easiest ways to keep the game from launching, and it hides every other fix on this list.
- If you think EAC is wrongly blocking a cosmetic mod or other legitimate software, Arrowhead asks you to report it through its official Zendesk support rather than trying to get around the anti-cheat.
Does Easy Anti-Cheat affect PS5 and Xbox players?
Not in any way you need to act on. Every launch problem in this guide is a PC (Steam) issue: the GameGuard folder, the Dell driver, the EAC installer and the Proton prefix only exist on PC. On PS5 and Xbox, just make sure the latest update (7.2.2) has installed. If your PS5 is crashing for other reasons, our PS5 crashing and freezing fix covers console-specific steps.

FAQ
Why did Helldivers 2 switch from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat? According to Arrowhead's official FAQ, "the implementation of GameGuard for HELLDIVERS 2 wasn't as effective as it could have been." The studio switched to Easy Anti-Cheat on October 20, 2026 (patch 7.2.0) to crack down on cheat mods that were affecting other players and even manipulating the Galactic War.
How do I fix the 0xc0000142 error in Helldivers 2? Arrowhead calls a Windows Restart (not Shut down) "the main fix for any 0xc0000142 error." Do it as part of the full checklist: purge mods, delete ReShade and OptiScaler files from the bin folder, delete %appdata%\Arrowhead\Helldivers2, run GGuninst.exe from the EasyAntiCheat folder, delete any leftover GameGuard folder, update drivers and Windows, Restart, and verify game files. If it persists, delete the bin and data folders and verify again.
Did patch 7.2.2 fix the 0xc0000142 error? Not for everyone. The 7.2.2 notes list "Fixed a rare crash on boot", but they don't name 0xc0000142, and at least one player posted the error the day the patch shipped. Update first, then run Arrowhead's checklist if the error remains.
Should I reinstall GameGuard to fix Helldivers 2 crashes? No. That advice predates patch 7.2.0. Helldivers 2 now uses Easy Anti-Cheat, so leftover GameGuard files cause problems rather than fix them. Remove GameGuard; don't rebuild it.
Does Easy Anti-Cheat make Helldivers 2 need a better PC? No. Arrowhead's FAQ states there are no changes to hardware requirements. If the game ran before October 20, your PC can still run it. A launch failure is a software conflict, not a spec problem.
Is Helldivers 2 still playable on Steam Deck? Yes. Arrowhead says Steam Deck and Linux compatibility "remains unchanged." If yours won't launch after 7.2.0, back up and rename steamapps/compatdata/553850 so Steam rebuilds it, verify files, and if needed do a full clean reinstall to clear leftover GameGuard files.
What is DBUtilDrv2.sys and why does Helldivers 2 want it unloaded? It's a Dell system driver with a known security vulnerability (Dell advisories DSA-2021-088 and DSA-2021-152), and Easy Anti-Cheat won't start while it's loaded. Remove it with Dell's official DBUtil Removal Utility and restart. That clears the block, and the game should launch.
