Quick answer (as of November 2, 2026): Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes about 23 hours to beat on the main story, about 30 hours with side content, and about 50 hours for 100%, according to HowLongToBeat player submissions. The campaign runs 24 numbered missions on Maxroll's walkthrough, so a mission averages just under an hour. Fewer than 1 in 8 Steam players has finished Carnage, the hardest mode and the second run behind most of the gap between "beaten" and "100%".
Launch-day guides guessed at these numbers. Two months on, there are real figures: 463 logged HowLongToBeat runs and Steam's global achievement rates. This guide uses both, and it corrects the 22-chapter figure that launch-week guides, including ours, printed. Capcom's only length guidance is the "about 20 hours" its producer gave before launch, so every figure below is attributed.
How long does Onimusha: Way of the Sword take to beat?
Plan on 23 hours for the story and 30 hours if you do side content along the way. The table shows live HowLongToBeat data, checked November 2, 2026. Rushed and Leisure are its fastest and slowest typical runs.
| Playstyle | Average | Rushed | Leisure | Runs logged |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main story | 22.4 hours | 15.9 hours | 27.9 hours | 78 |
| Main + side content | 30.5 hours | 23.1 hours | 40.9 hours | 325 |
| Completionist | 50.1 hours | 38.0 hours | 66.4 hours | 60 |
| All playstyles | 31.7 hours | 20.0 hours | 56.9 hours | 463 |
Most submitted runs sit on the second row: 325 of 463 are Main + Sides. That matches TheGamer's own Action-difficulty run. The outlet reported: "It takes roughly 30 hours to finish," counting some side content and plenty of deaths.
Early estimates were close on the story and low on the rest. Before launch, producer Akihito Kadowaki told Famitsu: "It's not a game where you defeat the same boss over and over like 'Monster Hunter,' so I think it will take about 20 hours to complete." GameTrek also put the story alone at roughly 20 hours. Video Games Chronicle gave a 33-hour figure for every side mission. Neither number counts Carnage, and that second run accounts for most of the climb to 50 hours.
How long is 100% in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Budget 50 hours for HowLongToBeat's completionist figure and 60 to 70 hours for the Platinum or every Steam achievement. Those are different finish lines:
- Completionist, about 50 hours. TheGamer's estimate agrees: "it should take you around 50 hours to finish everything." It splits that into 30 to 35 hours for the first clear with all side content, then up to 20 hours for a Carnage run.
- Platinum, 60 to 70 hours. That is PowerPyx's estimate. The extra time goes to clearing all 18 Boss Rematch fights and maxing every upgrade. Our Platinum trophy guide has the order to do it in.
Carnage is not optional for completion. It unlocks only after one full clear, and once you select it you cannot switch back to Story or Action. It also resets your gear upgrades and Red Souls, so that second run takes real work. Our Carnage and New Game+ guide lists what carries over.
The optional checklist is the other time sink. These counts are from PowerPyx's trophy roadmap:
- 18 Chance Encounters and 8 Mysteries of Kyoto
- 36 Lion Dogs and 23 Genma Notes
- 7 Oni Armaments and 15 Charms to find and upgrade
- 9 Hozuki Pouch pickups (4 Oni Cloths and 5 Skeleton Hozuki) to find and max your pouches
How many missions and chapters are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
24 on Maxroll's count, the numbering we use here. Capcom doesn't publish a count, and the major guides split the campaign differently. Maxroll numbers 24 missions. IGN lists 25: a prologue plus 24 stages. Vandal and GameTrek each count 23. The 22 from launch-week guides is too low. One entry below looks optional but isn't: The Light of Vengeance is a Kyoto Mystery that the story requires.
Spoiler warning: this list names every story boss. Here is the full order, using Maxroll's numbering, with area and main-boss details from GameTrek, Maxroll and our full boss list. Some recurring enemies are left out.

| 23 | The Clash at Rendaino | Rendaino | Benkei (Fully Armed) |
| 24 | The Way of the Sword | Shanaoh Castle | Minamoto no Yoshitsune |
Mission 23 is the point of no return, so finish your exploration before you speak with Takamura to start it.
The game isn't open world. It is built from missions with an explorable Eastern Kyoto area and optional side content, which is why Main + Sides runs range from 23 to 41 hours.
What percentage of players have finished Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
52.6% of Steam players have beaten the final boss, as of November 2, 2026, about two months after the September 4 launch. Only 12.0% have finished Carnage. These figures come from Steam's global achievement data, so they cover PC only. They show what has been unlocked, not why anyone stopped, and some players are still mid-run.
| Milestone | Steam achievement | Players |
|---|---|---|
| Drive off Sasaki Ganryu (Mission 2) | Onimusha Showdown | 90.7% |
| Defeat Rasho-gan (Mission 5) | Twisted Fates | 83.1% |
| Defeat the Greater Nue (Mission 11) | Dokyo's Fixation | 73.7% |
| Defeat Benkei (Mission 14) | Benkei: Out, but Not Down | 69.7% |
| Defeat Shuten Doji (Mission 19) | Wide Awake | 62.1% |
| Defeat Dokyo (Mission 22) | End This Madness | 57.0% |
| Defeat Benkei at Rendaino (Mission 23) | Baited by Benkei | 55.0% |
| Beat Yoshitsune (story complete) | Truly, Thank You | 52.6% |
| All Mysteries of Kyoto | Demystified | 47.4% |
| All Chance Encounters | No Job Too Small | 38.5% |
| All Lion Dogs | For the Love of Dog | 37.8% |
| Complete the game on Carnage | True Onimusha | 12.0% |
| All Boss Rematches, all difficulties | Glutton for Punishment | 11.0% |
| Every achievement | Peerless | 7.8% |
Two things stand out. First, the final boss isn't the biggest gap in the numbers. The unlock rate for Yoshitsune is about 96% of the rate for Benkei at Rendaino (52.6 against 55.0), despite his reputation. The decline is spread across the whole campaign instead, at up to about six points per boss once you count the bosses left out of the table.
Second, Carnage has the steepest gap. Its unlock rate is about 23% of the story-clear rate (12.0 against 52.6). The rate for every achievement is about 65% of the Carnage rate (7.8 against 12.0).
How do you finish Onimusha: Way of the Sword faster?
Do your cleanup before Carnage and you avoid redoing it. These are the changes that save hours:
- Lower the difficulty for one fight. Story and Action can be swapped at any Spirit Mirror. Our difficulty settings guide covers what changes.
- Finish side content on your first save. PowerPyx notes that Continue puts you back before The Clash at Rendaino after the credits, so you can still clean up. Genma Notes and Lion Dogs you've found carry into Carnage. PowerPyx lists Mysteries and Chance Encounters as not carrying over, so clear those on this save.
- Spend Red Souls before the final boss. Unspent Red Souls are lost on New Game+, and gear upgrades reset. Charm and Hozuki Pouch enhancements carry over, so put leftovers there. Our souls and upgrades guide has the priorities.
- Run Boss Rematches on the highest difficulty you have. PowerPyx says that beating a boss on the hardest difficulty also completes every difficulty below it. That turns a three-pass grind into one pass. See our Boss Rematch guide.
- Don't skip side content entirely. One r/Onimusha player warned on November 1 that people reach the final boss with access to less than half their skills, because they didn't know some unlock through a side quest. Two of the three Oni Portals that open higher skill tiers are optional. Skipping everything can cost you more retries than it saves.
Which is right for you: story run or full clear?
Choose by how much you enjoy the combat. A story run gives you every major duel in about 23 hours. Main + Sides, at about 30 hours, is the best value: you get the skills that make late bosses fairer. Commit to 50 or more hours only if the Carnage rewards appeal. The Bishamon Sword, for one, is locked behind a full Carnage clear.
