Onimusha: Way of the Sword has been out for two months, and Steam's global achievement stats now show which trophies the fewest players have. As of November 7, 2026, 53.1% of Steam players have beaten the final boss, 12.1% have cleared Carnage and only 7.9% hold Peerless, the Platinum-equivalent achievement. This guide lists all 52 trophies with their grade and live Steam unlock rate, then gives the two-run route that skips the extra grind. It also covers four of the rarest trophies: Glutton for Punishment, Genma-ologist, Genma Griller and Charmed Life.
Quick answer: Onimusha: Way of the Sword has 52 trophies: 1 Platinum ("Peerless"), 2 Gold, 9 Silver, 40 Bronze. You need 2 playthroughs minimum (one clear to unlock Carnage, then a Carnage New Game+ run) and about 60–70 hours (PowerPyx). Nothing is missable and no trophy is known to be glitched. The two Golds are True Onimusha (beat the game on Carnage, 12.1% on Steam) and Glutton for Punishment (every Boss Rematch on every difficulty, 11.2%). A Carnage rematch win also credits Story and Action, so you fight each boss once. The rarest non-Gold trophies are Genma-ologist (all 23 Genma Notes, 12.2%) and Genma Griller (13.3%), which in practice needs a fully upgraded Firebird Flute.
How many trophies are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
There are 52: 1 Platinum, 2 Gold, 9 Silver and 40 Bronze. PlatPursuit's PS5 list, PSNProfiles, TrueTrophies and PowerPyx all show the same split. Xbox and Steam have the same 52 as achievements, with Peerless ("Unlock all achievements") standing in for the Platinum.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Total trophies | 52 (1P / 2G / 9S / 40B) | PSNProfiles, TrueTrophies |
| Platinum | Peerless | Steam / PSN list |
| Time to Platinum | 60–70 hours | PowerPyx |
| Difficulty | ~6.5 / 10 | PowerPyx |
| Minimum playthroughs | 2 | PowerPyx |
| Missable / glitched | 0 / 0 | PowerPyx |
| Steam players with Peerless | 7.9% | Steam global stats, Nov 7, 2026 |
For comparison, HowLongToBeat currently shows about 50 hours for completionist play, while PowerPyx's 60–70 hour estimate is for the full Platinum, including Carnage. Our how long to beat breakdown has the per-playstyle times.
Which Onimusha trophies are the rarest?
The Steam percentages below come from Steam's global achievement stats for app 2638890, checked on November 7, 2026. They cover Steam players only, not PlayStation or Xbox players. They show how rare each trophy is, not why players stopped. These are the ten rarest trophies apart from Peerless:
| Rank | Trophy | Grade | What it asks | Steam % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Glutton for Punishment | Gold | Beat all Boss Rematch opponents on all difficulty levels | 11.2% |
| 2 | True Onimusha | Gold | Complete the game on Carnage | 12.1% |
| 3 | Genma-ologist | Bronze | Collect all the Genma notes | 12.2% |
| 4 | Genma Griller | Bronze | Set three enemies ablaze at once | 13.3% |
| 5 | Charmed Life | Silver | Enhance all charms to the maximum level | 13.4% |
| 6 | Medical Marvel | Silver | Enhance all Hozuki Pouches to the maximum level | 16.8% |
| 7 | Flow State | Bronze | Defeat 50 enemies with Chain Issen attacks | 17.0% |
| 8 | Citizen Savior | Bronze | Rescue 30 townspeople from marauding Genma | 19.8% |
| 9 | Oni's Oni | Bronze | Defeat 50 enemies in the Oni Awakened state | 20.3% |
| 10 | Well-Rounded | Silver | Learn and upgrade all basic and special skills | 21.0% |
Two things stand out. First, Glutton for Punishment and True Onimusha are less than one point apart. That is consistent with PowerPyx's note that a Carnage win in Boss Rematch also clears the lower difficulties, though the rates alone don't prove it. Second, two Bronzes are rarer than every Silver: Genma-ologist and Genma Griller. Both are easy to overlook, which the next sections deal with.
Do you need to beat Carnage for the Platinum?
Yes. True Onimusha (Gold) reads "Complete the game on difficulty level 'Carnage'", and Carnage only unlocks after one full clear, as New Game+. Once you choose Carnage on a save, it is locked in and you cannot drop back to Story or Action on that save. Enemies hit hard enough that grabs and heavy attacks can kill you outright, and some bosses get new moves; Sasaki Ganryu, for example, gains his own Issen counter.
Your skills, charms and charm upgrades, Hozuki Pouches and Oni Armaments carry over into NG+. Sword and gauntlet upgrades, materials and unspent Red Souls do not. Before you start Carnage, spend leftover Red Souls on charm and pouch upgrades, because those carry over and your sword levels will not. The full list of what carries over is in our Carnage and New Game+ guide, and boss-by-boss survival tips are in our Carnage mode tips.
Clearing Carnage also unlocks the Bishamon Sword. It is one of only two reward cosmetics that changes gameplay: it raises Issen damage and widens the Issen window on any difficulty. Equip it before the Boss Rematch sweep. Details are in our Bishamon Sword guide.
Talking about the game's difficulty overall, not Carnage specifically, director Satoru Nihei told PC Gamer the team did not intend it "to be a particularly difficult game" like Sekiro or Nioh, and added: "We think it's hit the right spot in terms of the difficulty."
Does Carnage count for the lower difficulties in Boss Rematch?
For the trophy, yes. PowerPyx states: "Completing a Boss on the hardest difficulty available will complete all difficulties below it as well." So one Carnage win per opponent covers Story, Action and Carnage for Glutton for Punishment. Some fan trackers still tell you to clear each boss on all three difficulties. Following that advice costs time without adding anything if PowerPyx is right, and we have found no report of a Carnage-only sweep failing to unlock the trophy.
Practical rules for the sweep:
- Unlock it early: the Practice Ground opens during The Oni's Apprentice. Ring the bell in Emma's Hall, talk to Takamura, then choose Boss Rematch.
- 18 fights are on the menu, including the Enhanced and Altered variants. A boss only appears after you beat it in the story.
- Only Hozuki Pouches work in Boss Rematch, so other consumables from the item wheel are off. Max your pouches first (that also earns Medical Marvel).
- PowerPyx rates Minamoto no Yoshitsune (8.5/10) and Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) (7/10) as the hardest Carnage rematches.
- Clearing every rematch on Carnage also unlocks Warlord's Armor 2, whose gauntlet absorbs nearby souls automatically.
Strategies for every opponent are in our all bosses guide and the Boss Rematch guide.
How do you get Genma Griller?
Genma Griller ("Set three enemies ablaze at once") is unlocked by only 13.3% of Steam players, and the methods that look obvious don't work. AltChar found that coating enemies in oil, or using the Wind-Whipper near an open flame, sets Genma on fire without counting toward the trophy. The method that works:
- Pick up the Firebird Flute Oni Armament. AltChar places it in an Oni chest on the main path of Shadow Falls South.
- Upgrade it to its maximum level at a Spirit Mirror (Upgrade Equipment), which unlocks its charged shot.
- Find three Genma close together. If none are grouped, reset the world at a Spirit Mirror near a known spawn point.
- Fill the Oni Armament gauge with blue souls, hold R1 to charge, then release once fully charged. The trophy unlocks as soon as all three are burning.
Why is Genma-ologist so rare?
Genma Notes are the only collectible the game never marks on your map. Each one sits in a hidden chest that only shows up with Oni Vision. There are 23, and you need all 23 on one save. 22 can be found before the point of no return at the start of The Clash at Rendaino. The last note unlocks only after you beat Minamoto no Yoshitsune. So the full set can't be finished until after the credits, and the last note is easy to forget. Our Genma Notes locations guide lists all 23 in pickup order.

For Flow State, Chain Issen is an early sword skill. The 50 kills add up over the whole game, and there is no requirement to get them in one chain. Our Chain Issen guide covers the timing window. For Citizen Savior, IGN notes that townspeople under Genma attack appear around Kyoto as you explore, and each rescue gives a small reward, so keep doing them on both runs.
What counts as 100% for the collectible and upgrade trophies?
PowerPyx counts 275 collectibles in total. These are the counts that matter for trophies:
- Charmed Life: max all 15 charms you can earn in-game. The 6 bonus charms from the demo, pre-orders and the Deluxe editions are not required. Charm upgrades need about 135,000 Red Souls on top of Favor, so they are usually the last upgrade trophy to finish. Our best charms guide covers the upgrade order.
- Medical Marvel: there are 5 Hozuki Pouches. You'll find 9 pouch-related pickups (4 Oni Cloths and 5 Skeleton Hozuki), and each pouch's level 3 needs one Skeleton Hozuki. See our Hozuki Pouch guide.
- Oni Armory: this means every Oni Armament. There are 6 gauge-powered armaments; some trackers list 7 because they count the Oni Bow.
- Well-Rounded (Silver) / The Winding Way of the Sword (Bronze): 54 Power Stones and 55 Oni Stones fund the skill tree. Maxing one tree earns the Bronze, and maxing both earns the Silver.
- Dressed to Kill: every piece of equipment at level 5, using 25 Fine Silk and 25 Tamahagane alongside common materials.
According to PowerPyx, Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters do not carry into NG+. Finish all 8 Mysteries and all 18 Chance Encounters on your first save so you don't have to redo them on Carnage.
What is the fastest Platinum roadmap?
- Run 1 on Story or Action. Learn Issen and play normally, but save before the point of no return (the "Speak with Takamura" prompt at the start of The Clash at Rendaino). Clear all 18 Chance Encounters and all 8 Mysteries, and collect the Lion Dogs and 22 Genma Notes. Buy the Oni Vision: Treasures / Treasures 2 / Search Range skills early, because they make the collectible sweep much faster. Max the Firebird Flute and get Genma Griller.
- Upgrade everything. PowerPyx's method: save once you reach about 150,000 Favor, trade at Yorimasa's Monument, then reload to fund the next upgrade group. That gets you Dressed to Kill, Medical Marvel, Charmed Life and both skill trophies. Trophies stay unlocked after you reload, but your save keeps only the upgrades from the last load, so end on the save that has your charm and pouch upgrades, since those are the ones that carry into Carnage.
- Beat Yoshitsune, then choose Continue to return to the cleared save before The Clash at Rendaino. Pick up Genma Note #23 and anything else you missed. (Our point of no return checklist lists last-chance items.)
- Start Carnage NG+ from the cleared save. Keep a manual save of the cleared game in a separate slot. The game has 20 manual slots plus one autosave, and the autosave will be overwritten.
- Clear Carnage for True Onimusha and the Bishamon Sword, then win every Boss Rematch on Carnage for Glutton for Punishment. Finish any combat counters on weak enemies. Peerless unlocks.
FAQ
How many trophies are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? There are 52: 1 Platinum (Peerless), 2 Gold, 9 Silver and 40 Bronze. Xbox and Steam have the same 52 as achievements.
How long does the Onimusha: Way of the Sword Platinum take? About 60–70 hours across at least two playthroughs, according to PowerPyx: a first clear with every collectible and upgrade, then a Carnage NG+ run and the Boss Rematch sweep.
Is the Onimusha Platinum hard? It's moderate. PowerPyx rates it about 6.5/10 and nothing is missable, but only 7.9% of Steam players had Peerless as of November 7, 2026. The two Carnage Golds are the rarest trophies on the list, and PowerPyx rates the Carnage Yoshitsune rematch the hardest fight.
Do I have to beat every Boss Rematch three times? No. A Carnage win also credits the lower difficulties for Glutton for Punishment (PowerPyx). Beat each of the 18 opponents once on Carnage.
Can I lose my NG+ save? Yes, if you load the wrong slot. One r/Onimusha player picked an early manual save after the credits, and the autosave of their finished game was overwritten at the next save point, leaving them no cleared file to start Carnage from. Before the final mission, make a manual save in its own slot and don't overwrite it.
Are any trophies missable in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? No. After the credits, Continue takes you back to just before The Clash at Rendaino with free roam, so every collectible and side quest can still be finished.
Trophy list and Steam unlock rates pulled from Steam's global achievement stats for Onimusha: Way of the Sword (app 2638890) on November 7, 2026; grades per the PS5 trophy list (PlatPursuit; 1/2/9/40 split confirmed by PSNProfiles and TrueTrophies).
