Capcom's first new mainline Onimusha in 20 years has a new official sales number. On October 27, 2026, Capcom published its first-half earnings and confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword has passed 1.7 million units worldwide. Its results chart puts the exact figure at 1.78 million. Below you'll find each number, where it comes from, how it compares with the older Onimusha games, and how it stacks up against the "almost 2 million" estimate that went around earlier this month.
Quick answer (as of October 29, 2026): Capcom says Onimusha: Way of the Sword has sold over 1.7 million units worldwide (press release, October 27, 2026, covering the six months to September 30). The unit-sales chart in Capcom's first-half results lists it at 1.78 million, the 5th best-selling Capcom game of April–September 2026, even though it only went on sale on September 4. The same results put the Onimusha series at 11 million units. Capcom's earlier figures were 1 million units on launch day and a series total above 10 million (September 7, 2026). Analyst GameDiscoverCo had estimated "almost 2 million" by the end of September, so that estimate came in slightly high.
How many copies has Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold?
The latest official answer is more than 1.7 million units, and the precise chart figure is 1.78 million. Both come from Capcom's earnings for the fiscal first half ending September 30, 2026, released on October 27.
Here is how Capcom's press release puts it, word for word:
"This included sales of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new installment in the series in 20 years, which won two awards at a game show and surpassed 1.7 million units sold worldwide, driven by acclaim for its exceptional gameplay experience."
— Capcom press release, October 27, 2026
The 1.78 million figure comes from the Unit Sales Ranking chart on page 7 of Capcom's first-half results presentation, which lists the game at 178 (in units of 10,000) for both the period and lifetime. Capcom notes the chart figures "include ports, etc. to additional platforms," which for Way of the Sword means PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
Keep the time window in mind. The numbers run to September 30, so they cover only 27 days of sales (September 4–30). Sales in October will appear in Capcom's next quarterly report.
What are the official Onimusha: Way of the Sword sales milestones?
These are the only sales figures that come from Capcom itself, in date order:
| Date announced | Figure | What it covers | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sept 7, 2026 | 1,000,000+ units | Worldwide sales on launch day (Sept 4) | Capcom IR press release |
| Sept 7, 2026 | 10,000,000+ units | Onimusha series total since 2001 | Capcom IR press release |
| Oct 27, 2026 | 1,700,000+ units | Worldwide sales through Sept 30 | Capcom H1 earnings press release |
| Oct 27, 2026 | 1.78 million | Unit Sales Ranking chart, Apr–Sep 2026 | Capcom H1 results presentation, p. 7 |
| Oct 27, 2026 | 11 million | Onimusha series total | Capcom H1 results presentation, p. 15 |
Some rough math, treating "over 1 million" as a floor: going from about 1 million on day one to 1.78 million by September 30 means up to roughly 780,000 more copies in the next 26 days, or on the order of 30,000 a day. For a premium game that had already sold a million copies on its first day, that's a healthy run of sales in the weeks after launch.
Did Onimusha: Way of the Sword sell well?
Yes, by any reasonable measure. Three facts from Capcom's own data show it:
1. It already outsold Onimusha 3. Capcom's official Platinum Titles list puts the original trilogy at 2.02 million (Onimusha: Warlords, 2001), 2.10 million (Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny, 2002) and 1.52 million (Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, 2004). At 1.78 million after less than a month, Way of the Sword has passed Onimusha 3 and is about 240,000 units short of Warlords.
2. It made Capcom's top five for the half-year. In Capcom's April–September 2026 Unit Sales Ranking, it sits 5th, behind Resident Evil 4 (remake, 3.54 million in the period), Pragmata (2.73 million), Resident Evil 2 (remake, 2.06 million) and Devil May Cry 5 (1.83 million). It is ahead of Resident Evil Requiem, which added 1.59 million in the same period. Pragmata launched in April and had about six months on sale. Way of the Sword had 27 days.
3. Capcom highlighted it in the earnings release. Capcom's Digital Contents business sold 36.86 million units in the half, up from 23.85 million a year earlier. Group net sales rose 49.0% to ¥120,887 million, and operating profit rose 54.5% to ¥60,769 million. In the press release, Way of the Sword is the first title Capcom mentions by name when explaining that growth.
Where did the "almost 2 million" number come from?
Before Capcom's update, the largest figure going around was an estimate from GameDiscoverCo, the analytics newsletter run by Simon Carless. Its September 2026 market report put the game at "730k copies on Steam and almost 2 million across all platforms" by the end of the month. It also estimated about $30.4 million in September Steam revenue, roughly $33.7 million in total Steam revenue since launch, and about 576,000 Steam copies sold in September alone.
Now that Capcom's numbers are out, the two can be compared directly:
| Figure | GameDiscoverCo estimate | Capcom official |
|---|---|---|
| All platforms, end of September | "almost 2 million" | 1.7M+ (press release) / 1.78M (chart) |
| Steam only | ~730,000 | Not disclosed |
| Platform split | Steam only | Not disclosed |
The estimate was close, and if anything a little high. "Almost 2 million" against 1.78 million suggests a gap of up to about 200,000 units, though "almost" makes the exact difference impossible to pin down. That's normal for modeled data, which is built from review counts, player concurrency and sales-rank signals rather than Capcom's own books. The ~730,000 Steam figure is still only an estimate, because Capcom does not publish per-platform sales. If you see a headline saying "Onimusha sold 2 million," the official number is 1.78 million through September 30.
How many copies has the Onimusha series sold in total?
On September 7, 2026, Capcom confirmed that the series passed 10 million cumulative units, with Way of the Sword pushing it over the line. In its October 27 results, Capcom updated that to 11 million units. It's listed on page 15 of the first-half presentation under "Series Development of Leading Brands". (Capcom's separate Game Series Sales web page still showed its June 30, 2026 snapshot when we checked on October 29.)
For context, that puts Onimusha in Capcom's mid-tier. It's far behind Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, but respectable for a series that had no new mainline game between Dawn of Dreams (2006) and this one.
Why is it selling so well?
A few things explain the strong start.
Reviews. Capcom's own results list the game's Metascore at 85 (PS5 version, as of October 27, 2026). On OpenCritic it also averages 85, with a "Mighty" rating and 93% of critics recommending it (checked October 29, 2026). IGN gave it 10/10. For the full breakdown, see our review round-up.
Awards. Capcom confirmed it won Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game at the Gamescom Awards 2026 (August 26–30), the "two awards at a game show" mentioned in the October release.
The demo. Capcom credited "multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions" for the launch-day million. A free demo has been on Steam since June 2, 2026, and was expanded on August 25 with more areas and a new boss, Daidara. Letting players try the Issen parry-counter before buying worked well for a game built around timing.
It's also a single-player, buy-once action game: no live service, no battle pass and no premium currency. The Red Souls you spend on upgrades are earned in play. Director Satoru Nihei has said it is not a Soulslike, describing it as a character-action game built around sword fights, even though its parry-focused combat draws the comparison. Hitting 1.78 million copies at a $69.99 standard price, with no free-to-play funnel, is a strong result.
What do the sales mean for DLC and a sequel?
Strong sales make more Onimusha content more likely, but Capcom has not announced story DLC, an expansion or a sequel as of October 29, 2026. The October earnings release doesn't mention any plans. Capcom kept its full-year forecast unchanged (¥210 billion net sales, ¥83 billion operating profit) and said it is "on track" to hit it.
The most Capcom has said publicly is producer Akihito Kadowaki's comment to SavePoint at Gamescom 2026: "There's a desire to make more Onimusha games in the future. Obviously not committing to anything at the moment, but yeah, hopefully." For the current DLC (including the free Monster Hunter Rise outfits) and the sequel situation, see our DLC and sequel guide.

FAQ
How many copies has Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold? Capcom says it surpassed 1.7 million units worldwide by September 30, 2026 (press release dated October 27, 2026), and Capcom's first-half unit-sales chart lists it at 1.78 million. Before that, Capcom confirmed 1 million units on launch day (September 4).
Is the 1.78 million figure official? Yes. It comes from the Unit Sales Ranking chart in Capcom's first-half results presentation for April–September 2026. The press release itself rounds it to "surpassed 1.7 million units." Neither figure includes sales after September 30.
