Valheim Food Tier List 2026: Best Food and Combos for Every Biome (1.0.20)

Updated October 22, 2026 for Valheim 1.0, patch 1.0.20 (released October 15, 2026). Iron Gate's 1.0 launch notes list "20+ New food items" for the Deep North, and they push the Ashlands dishes off the top of the tier list. Every value on this page was re-checked against the Valheim Wiki food table and the 1.0.20 patch notes today. This refresh adds all 21 Deep North food items with exact stats, the recipes worth cooking, and fixes one thing our earlier version had wrong: the Mead Ketill does make one food, Oat Milk.

Food decides more of your Valheim run than any weapon. A naked Viking has 25 health. Everything above that, plus the stamina you dodge with and the eitr you cast with, comes from the three dishes you ate in the last half hour. This guide ranks the best food in Valheim for every biome, covers every Deep North food, and gives you the exact three-food combos for combat, exploring and magic. Unless we say otherwise, combo numbers are the food bonus: add your base 25 health and 50 stamina for your character's total.

Quick answer: The best food in Valheim 1.0 comes from the Deep North. Meat In Bread and Seal Meat Soup give the most health (110 each). Oatmeal and Pancakes give the most stamina (115 each), and Oatmeal adds 85 eitr on top, for the highest total of any single food (239). Fish Soup, Oven Pancake and Meatballs and Poteitr give the most eitr (105). The strongest combat combo is Meat In Bread + Seal Meat Soup + Piquant Pie: +325 health from food, 350 health in total with your base 25. Before the Deep North, Piquant Pie (105 health) and Roasted Crust Pie (100 stamina) are still the best you can cook.

What are the best foods in Valheim right now?

  • Best health food: Meat In Bread or Seal Meat Soup, 110 health. Both cook in a level 7 Cauldron and heal 7 health per tick.
  • Best stamina food: Oatmeal or Pancakes, 115 stamina. The wiki notes that Oat Milk "provides the second highest stamina gain of any food item in the game at 110."
  • Best eitr food: Fish Soup, Oven Pancake or Meatballs and Poteitr, 105 eitr.
  • Best single dish overall: Oatmeal, 39 health, 115 stamina and 85 eitr. No other food comes close to its 239 total.
  • Best feast: Northern Morning Fare, 85 health, 85 stamina and 43 eitr for 50 minutes. You can only make it after you kill Kall Fimbulbringer.
  • Best food before the Deep North: Piquant Pie (105 health), Roasted Crust Pie (100 stamina) and Marinated Greens (95 eitr), all Ashlands dishes.

How does food work in Valheim?

Get these five rules right before you read the tier list. They decide which foods are worth cooking.

  • Three slots, three different foods. You can have three foods active at once, and they must be different. You can't eat a second serving of the same food until the first has partly digested (its icon flashes). Eating it again refreshes its strength and timer.
  • There is no hunger bar. In the Valheim Wiki's words: "Although starvation is not possible, food provides valuable buffs to both the maximum and regeneration rates for health and stamina." If you eat nothing you drop back to 25 health and slow regeneration. That is dangerous, but you never take damage from hunger.
  • Buffs fade slowly, then fast. The wiki gives the decay formula as base bonus × (time left ÷ full duration)^0.3. With half the duration left, a food still gives 81% of its value. With 10% left, it gives 50%. Re-eat when the icon starts flashing, not when it runs out.
  • Health, stamina and eitr stack. Your maximum is your base plus the three foods added together. Eitr, the magic resource, stays at zero until you eat a food that has it, and the first ones come from the Mistlands.
  • Read the fork colour. The fork on each food icon shows its bias: red for health, yellow for stamina, blue for eitr, white for balanced.

Health also feeds your Stagger bar, so shield players want health. Dodge-roll players want stamina. Mages need eitr. There is no single best food, only the best food for how you fight.

What is the best food for each biome in Valheim?

This is the strongest dish each biome newly unlocks. An older dish can still beat it (Serpent Stew's 80 health tops every Mountain and Plains health food), so keep eating the higher number. Each row assumes you've beaten the boss before that biome and built the Cauldron level its recipes need.

Deep NorthMeat In Bread / Seal Meat Soup, 110 HPOatmeal / Pancakes, 115 stamFish Soup / Oven Pancake / Meatballs and Poteitr, 105 eitr

What the table tells you:

  • Serpent Stew is the biggest early jump. At 80 health it almost doubles Deer Stew (45) and beats every Mountain dish. That is why players hunt Serpents at sea as soon as they have a Karve. Serpent Stew needs a level 2 Cauldron, and the meat needs an Iron Cooking Station.
  • The Deep North is a small health jump and a big stamina jump. Meat In Bread (110) is only 5 health above Piquant Pie, but Oatmeal and Pancakes add 15 stamina over Roasted Crust Pie, and Oatmeal brings 85 eitr with it.
  • Melee players can ignore the eitr column. Those slots are better spent on health and stamina.

What is the best Deep North food, and how do you make it?

The Deep North adds 21 new food items on the wiki's list. Most of them need three things you don't have when you first arrive: a level 7 Cauldron, Deep North crops and Ice. Here are the recipes worth cooking, all from the Valheim Wiki on patch 1.0.20.

Northern Morning Fare (10 servings)3 Cooked Moose Meat, 5 Poteitr, 2 Oat Flour, 1 Seasoning of the GourdFood Preparation Table

How to get the ingredients:

  • Level 6 and 7 Cauldron. The Cauldron gains a level for each of its six upgrades you build nearby. The last two are usually Rolling Pins and Cutting Boards (8 Ashwood, 6 Finewood, 4 Flametal) and the Smoker (5 Bloodgold, 6 Timberwood), which must sit within 5 meters of the Cauldron. That means your first Bloodgold should go into the Smoker, not just your gear. Our Bloodgold farming guide covers the Gammeltroll route.
  • Oats, Kale and Poteitr are farmed, but not in the Deep North. All three only grow on cultivated ground in the Meadows, Black Forest, Plains and Ashlands. Find Oat Seeds and Seed Poteitr in the granary barrels of Deep North Abandoned Villages. Kale Seeds also lie on the ground in the biome. Bring them home and plant them. Oat plants yield more Oat Seeds (3 per plant). A Windmill turns the seeds into Oats and Oats into Oat Flour. Our farming guide covers the Cultivator and plot layout.
  • Lingonberries grow on bushes in Deep North forests. Captive Fulings and Hexahedric Pulp in Mörkhalla also drop them.
  • Ice drops from the Ice Sheets and frozen ponds along Deep North shores, and from Deep North Greydwarfs and Skeletons.
  • Moose Meat and Seal Blubber come from the biome's two new animals. A Moose drops 4–5 meat. A Seal drops 2 blubber (8 at two stars). Cook Moose Meat on an Iron Cooking Station (80 health) and Seal Blubber in a Stone Oven (60 health), but the soups and breads above use them raw. If you'd rather keep a Moose than eat one, see our Moose taming guide.
  • Seasoning of the Gourd is sold by the Bog Witch, 220 coins for 5, and only after Kall Fimbulbringer is dead. That is why Northern Morning Fare is an endgame feast.

The two biggest traps: Oat Milk is made in the Mead Ketill, which most older food guides (including ours) said never makes food, and the Deep North crops refuse to grow in the Deep North itself.

What is the best food combo in Valheim?

The three food bonuses add together, then stack on your base 25 health and 50 stamina. Below, the bold figure is the food bonus and the bracket is your total with a fresh meal. These are the best Deep North combos, worked out from the wiki values above.

Combat and bosses: Meat In Bread + Seal Meat Soup + Piquant Pie. +325 health, +109 stamina (350 health, 159 stamina in total). The most health you can eat in Valheim. Swap Piquant Pie for Smoked Moose Meat (105 health) if you want 7 health per tick on all three, at the cost of 5 minutes of duration.

Exploring, mining and building: Oatmeal + Pancakes + Oat Milk. +115 health, +340 stamina, +85 eitr (140 health, 390 stamina). Every slot is a stamina food, so it is fragile in a fight but you'll almost never run out of stamina.

Mage: Fish Soup + Oven Pancake + Meatballs and Poteitr. +109 health, +54 stamina, +315 eitr (134 health, 104 stamina). The maximum eitr in the game. See our Valheim magic guide for which staves can use it.

Everything at once: Oatmeal + Northern Morning Fare + Ashlands Gourmet Bowl. +199 health, +275 stamina, +166 eitr (224 health, 325 stamina). That's a 640-point food bonus, the highest combined bonus the wiki lists. It's the lazy endgame option when you don't want to swap foods between tasks.

Before the Deep North (Ashlands): Piquant Pie + Mashed Meat + Fiery Svinstew gives +300 health (325 in total) for boss fights. Piquant Pie + Mashed Meat + Roasted Crust Pie (+239 health, +169 stamina) is the balanced version most players run into the Deep North.

Earlier biomes: Two of your best health foods plus one stamina food for fights. Flip it to two stamina and one health for exploring. In the Plains, Lox Meat Pie + Fish Wraps + Blood Pudding gives +170 health and +122 stamina (195 and 172 in total).

Which crafting station cooks what?

Most "why can't I make this?" questions are really station questions.

  • Cooking Station grills the early meats (Boar, Deer, Neck Tail, Bear and Wolf) and fish. It needs a fire under it.
  • Iron Cooking Station cooks the later meats: Serpent, Lox, Seeker, Asksvin, Volture, Bonemaw and Moose. Chicken and Hare work on either cooking station.
  • Cauldron makes stews, soups and most Deep North meals. It has seven levels, each unlocked by building an upgrade next to it: Spice Rack, Butcher's Table, Pots and Pans, Mortar and Pestle, Rolling Pins and Cutting Boards, then the Smoker. If you have the ingredients but the recipe is missing, the Cauldron level is almost always why.
  • Food Preparation Table makes feasts, which you place and eat from directly, and it prepares uncooked pies and breads.
  • Stone Oven bakes those prepared pies and breads, plus Oven Pancake batter and Seal Blubber.
  • Mead Ketill prepares mead bases (you ferment them in the Fermenter), plus Oat Milk, which you can eat straight away.

What food mistakes should you avoid in Valheim?

  • Eating only health food. Three red-fork dishes leave you with no stamina to dodge or block. Keep at least one stamina food unless you're tanking a boss.
  • Waiting for buffs to run out. The last 10% of a food's duration only gives half its value. Re-eat as soon as the icon flashes.
  • Wasting Bloodgold before the Smoker. Five Bloodgold for a level 7 Cauldron unlocks Meat In Bread, Seal Meat Soup and Fish Soup. That's the best defensive upgrade in the biome for the price.
  • Planting Deep North seeds in the Deep North. They won't grow there. Farm them back home.
  • Stuck with the wrong food? The wiki notes that Pukeberries, Rotten Meat and Toadstool make you "Feeling sick", which clears your current food so you can eat a different set.

For the gear that goes with these meals, see our Valheim weapon tier list and armor tier list.
