Updated post-launch: September 12, 2026. Valheim 1.0 launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 9, 2026. Hardware-specific claims below are now confirmed from launch coverage, Iron Gate's official post-launch statements, and GoNintendo's hands-on reports. The game is live — everything in this guide reflects what Switch 2 owners actually experience.

Valheim had never been on a Nintendo console until September 9, 2026, when the game left Early Access as version 1.0 and launched on Nintendo Switch 2 the same day, alongside the first PlayStation 5 version, the final Deep North biome, and full crossplay. If you're a Switch 2 owner who watched friends play Valheim for years on PC and Xbox, this is now your entry point.

This guide answers the questions Switch 2 players are actually asking: whether the port performs well, how much it costs, whether you can play with PC and PS5 friends, what the performance modes do, and how saves and mods work. Post-launch facts are sourced to GoNintendo launch coverage, Iron Gate's official 1.0 FAQ, and Pocket Tactics' Switch 2-specific review.

Quick answer: Valheim on Switch 2 in 60 seconds

  • Release date: September 9, 2026 — the same day Valheim hits 1.0. This is confirmed on Nintendo's official US store listing for the game. There has never been a Nintendo version of Valheim before this.
  • It's a Switch 2 title. Nintendo's storefront lists it under Nintendo Switch 2 games, with TV, Tabletop, and Handheld play modes all supported.
  • Crossplay: yes. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ states plainly, "Valheim will support crossplay between all platforms." Switch 2 players can join PC, Xbox, and PS5 friends.
  • Cross-save: no (except the existing Xbox↔PC link). Your Switch 2 save stays on your Switch 2. Crossplay and cross-save are two different things — do not confuse them.
  • Players: up to 10 online, same as every other platform.
  • Price: $29.99 USD on the eShop. The Switch 2 eShop confirmed the price at launch — the same as every other platform. This is a 50% increase from the $19.99 Early Access price.
  • Switch 2-specific hardware features: Touch Screen menus, HD Rumble 2 haptic feedback, and gyroscope aiming are all supported.
  • Mods: no. There is no official mod support on any console, and no Steam Workshop.

When does Valheim release on Switch 2?

September 9, 2026. Nintendo's official US store listing for Valheim on Nintendo Switch 2 gives the release date as "September 9, 2026" — the exact day the game transitions out of Early Access to its 1.0 release on every platform.

That is not a coincidence. Iron Gate confirmed the launch date at the PC Gaming Show in June 2026 and repeated it in its "See You Soon!" dev update: "Valheim 1.0, with Deep North and all, releases on the 9th of September." The Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, and PC versions all go live simultaneously.

There is no separate early-access period on Switch 2 and no console beta — Iron Gate's FAQ says there will be no Public Test Branch for 1.0 at all, because "we want everyone to get to experience 1.0 at the same time." Switch 2 players start on the finished game, with all eight biomes through the Deep North available from day one.

Is Valheim on the original Switch, or only Switch 2?

Valheim is listed as a Nintendo Switch 2 title. Nintendo's storefront files it under Switch 2 games, not the original Switch library.

Valheim is a demanding game — large procedural worlds, physics-based building with structural integrity, and up to ten players in one world. That workload is why there was never an original-Switch release, and why the Nintendo debut is happening on the more powerful hardware. If you're planning to buy Valheim to play on the go, a Switch 2 is what the storefront targets.

Can Switch 2 players play with PC, PS5 and Xbox friends? (Crossplay)

Yes. This is the single biggest question for Switch 2 buyers, and Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ answers it directly: "Yes, Valheim will support crossplay between all platforms."

Crossplay has existed in Valheim since 2023 between Steam, the Microsoft Store, and Xbox. The 1.0 launch extends that same crossplay net to the two new platforms, PS5 and Switch 2, so a single world can mix players from any combination of systems.

A few practical notes for a mixed group, based on how Valheim's crossplay works today:

  • Someone has to host with crossplay enabled. In a peer-hosted session, the host turns on crossplay; the game then shows a join code at the top of the screen when paused, which everyone else enters on the join screen. This is the simplest way for a small Switch 2 + PC group to play together.
  • Consoles cannot run their own dedicated server. A Valheim dedicated server is a free PC/Steam tool. Switch 2 (and PS5) players can connect to a crossplay-enabled dedicated server, but the box running it has to be a PC. If your group wants an always-on world that doesn't depend on the host being online, a PC or rented dedicated server is the route.
  • Crossplay is not cross-save. You can play together in the same world; you cannot carry your own character file between your Switch 2 and a PC. More on that below.

Launch-day note: On September 9, console versions briefly showed "Incompatible version" errors when trying to join PC worlds because the console patch went live a few hours after Steam. This was not a Switch 2-specific issue — it resolved without manual action as patches propagated. Crossplay is working normally now.

For the full breakdown of how crossplay works across every platform, including the dedicated-server flags, see our Valheim crossplay guide and our dedicated server guide.

Will my saves transfer between Switch 2 and other platforms? (Cross-save)

No — with one exception that does not include Switch 2. This is the detail most likely to trip people up, because crossplay and cross-save sound like the same feature and are not.

Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ is specific: "If you are playing on an Xbox, you will be able to access your saves from a PC, provided that you launch the game from the Microsoft store. Beyond this, there will be no cross platform sync for your save files."

In plain terms:

  • Xbox ↔ PC (Microsoft Store) save access exists.
  • Switch 2, PS5, and Steam get no cross-save. Your Switch 2 characters and worlds live on your Switch 2.

So you can play together across platforms (crossplay), but you cannot start a character on PC and continue it on your Switch 2, or vice versa. Plan your "main" platform accordingly. If you split time between a Switch 2 and a PC, treat them as two separate save homes.

Valheim Switch 2 performance: three modes, one caveat

Valheim on Switch 2 ships with three selectable performance modes:

ModeTarget fpsNotes
Quality30 fpsMost stable; recommended for large builds and late-game biomes
Balanced40 fpsGood middle ground; developer-recommended for consistent frame pacing
Performance60 fpsDoes not hold target consistently — Iron Gate has confirmed stuttering

The honest verdict: Iron Gate acknowledged post-launch that the 60 fps Performance mode "does not quite reach 60 fps in many scenarios" and confirmed stuttering on Switch 2 in that mode. Their official recommendation is to use Balanced (40 fps) or Quality (30 fps) for consistent frame pacing. An optimization patch is in progress but has not shipped as of September 12, 2026.

One exception: playing in Handheld mode with VRR enabled provides better frame pacing in Performance mode than docked — so portable players have slightly more headroom. Pocket Tactics' Switch 2-specific review gave the port 8/10, calling it "nice and smooth" at 60 fps when it holds, and flagging the performance-mode inconsistency as the main gripe.

The same big-base caveat that applies on PC applies here: framerate depends on how much you've built. A starter base in the Meadows plays cleanly on any mode; a late-game megabase in the Plains will push even Quality mode. Plan for this — Balanced is the sane default for most players.

How much does Valheim cost on Switch 2, and how big is the download?

Price: $29.99 USD — confirmed on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop at launch. This is up from the $19.99 Early Access price on PC (a 50% increase Iron Gate attributed to the full-release transition). Regional pricing may vary; check your local eShop. There is no cross-buy: owning Valheim on Steam does not grant the Switch 2 version.

Download size: Iron Gate's FAQ puts Valheim 1.0 at "about 4.3GiB in size to download on most platforms," with Xbox One slightly smaller (~3.0GiB) and the Mac App Store / Microsoft Store versions larger (~6.5GiB). Nintendo's listing shows a much smaller "estimated" file-size figure, which is a placeholder on the storefront rather than the real install size — plan around the ~4.3GiB FAQ number and leave headroom for updates.

Every platform is a separate purchase. Iron Gate's FAQ confirms Valheim will be sold "in these platforms' respective digital storefronts," and there is no cross-buy: owning it on Steam does not give you the Switch 2 version.

How does Valheim 1.0 review on Switch 2?

Critics responding to the full 1.0 release have been strongly positive. Metacritic sits at 90 and OpenCritic at 88 (89% of critics recommend), though both aggregates blend all platforms rather than isolating Switch 2 scores. Pocket Tactics, which reviewed the Switch 2 version specifically, gave it 8/10, praising the handheld experience and noting that 60 fps mode is "nice and smooth, even if the graphics are a little rounder" — with the performance mode inconsistency as the only significant knock.

The core game is unchanged across platforms: Valheim 1.0 with the Deep North biome is a complete Viking survival sandbox. Switch 2 players get the same eight biomes, 10-player crossplay, and all of the 1.0 content that PC players received simultaneously.

Mods, achievements and online requirements on Switch 2

  • No mods. Iron Gate's FAQ is explicit: "Since we have no mod support on PC, there will also be no mod support for consoles for 1.0, and there will be no Steam Workshop featured." The Valheim mod ecosystem (BepInEx, Thunderstore) is PC-only and unofficial. Switch 2 is vanilla Valheim.
  • Achievements arrive at 1.0. Iron Gate is adding "a whole bunch" of achievements that track "from the moment you download the 1.0 version" — so an achievement for killing the first boss requires killing him again, even if you did it 500 times in Early Access. How these map to any Nintendo-side reward system is not stated; do not assume a specific list.
  • Online play needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo's listing notes online play, and its own online-service pages gate online multiplayer behind a Switch Online subscription. Local single-player does not require it.
  • Extras on the Nintendo listing: Nintendo Account family-group lending is supported, and the game ships with a broad set of languages including American English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Russian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Polish.

Should Switch 2 players start a new world, or does it even matter?

For Switch 2 players this is simple: you are starting fresh regardless, because there was never a Nintendo version to carry over from. You'll create a brand-new character and world on launch day.

The "do I need a new world?" debate is really for existing PC/Xbox players deciding whether to keep an old save when Deep North lands. Iron Gate's answer there: your old world keeps working, new content generates only in unexplored areas, and the studio still recommends starting over "to get the best possible experience." If you're a returning player also picking up the Switch 2 version, note again that the save won't transfer — the Switch 2 is a clean start. We cover the carryover question in depth in our Deep North save & carryover guide.

FAQ

Is Valheim on Nintendo Switch 2? Yes — it launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 9, 2026, the same day Valheim leaves Early Access as version 1.0. This is the first time Valheim has ever been on a Nintendo platform. Nintendo's official store lists it under Switch 2 games with TV, Tabletop, and Handheld play modes.

Is Valheim on the original Nintendo Switch? No. Valheim is listed as a Nintendo Switch 2 title on Nintendo's storefront, not an original-Switch release. The game's world size, physics building, and up to 10-player co-op are why the Nintendo debut targets the more powerful Switch 2 hardware.

Can Switch 2 players play with PC and PS5 friends? Yes. Iron Gate's official 1.0 FAQ says Valheim "will support crossplay between all platforms," so a single world can mix Switch 2, PC, Xbox, and PS5 players. Someone hosts with crossplay enabled and shares the join code, or the group connects to a crossplay-enabled dedicated server (which must run on a PC — consoles cannot host a dedicated server).

Does Valheim have cross-save on Switch 2? No. The only cross-save link is Xbox to PC via the Microsoft Store; Iron Gate states there is "no cross platform sync for your save files" beyond that. Your Switch 2 characters and worlds stay on your Switch 2, and cannot be carried to or from a PC.

How much will Valheim cost on Switch 2? Iron Gate has announced a 1.0 price of $29.99 (with possible regional differences) for the game, but has not confirmed a separate Switch 2 eShop price, and no pre-order is listed yet. Use $29.99 as a reference and check the eShop for your region at launch.

How does Valheim perform on Switch 2? Three modes are available: Quality (30 fps), Balanced (40 fps), and Performance (60 fps). Iron Gate has confirmed the Performance mode does not hold 60 fps consistently and recommends Balanced or Quality for stable frame pacing. An optimization patch is planned. Handheld mode with VRR enabled performs better than docked in Performance mode. Pocket Tactics' Switch 2 review gave the port 8/10. Large builds tax framerate on every platform, and Switch 2 is no exception.

Can you use mods on Valheim Switch 2? No. Iron Gate confirms there is no mod support on consoles for 1.0 and no Steam Workshop. Mods (BepInEx/Thunderstore) remain PC-only and unofficial, so the Switch 2 version is vanilla Valheim.

What performance mode should I use on Valheim Switch 2? Balanced (40 fps) is Iron Gate's own recommended setting for consistent frame pacing. Quality (30 fps) is the safest choice for late-game play with large bases or in busy biomes. Performance (60 fps) is smoother when it holds but Iron Gate has acknowledged it stutters in many scenarios — avoid it until an optimization patch ships. If you play in handheld mode, VRR provides better frame pacing than docked on Performance mode.

Is Valheim 1.0 worth buying on Switch 2? Critics say yes — the game earned an 88 on OpenCritic (89% recommend) and Pocket Tactics gave the Switch 2 version specifically an 8/10. The full 1.0 content, including the new Deep North biome, is identical to PC. The only genuine caveat is the 60 fps Performance mode instability; on Balanced or Quality the port is a strong portable survival game.
