When Is the Next Dota 2 Patch? 7.42, Silent Builds and the Latest Update

Dota 2 updated overnight on 3 November: the client took build 6970, its first new build in more than six days. It changed compiled client code plus a few support files, with no gameplay text, no change to the game archive and no patch notes. As of 07:00 UTC on 3 November the live gameplay patch is still 7.41f, from 15 September 2026, and 7.42 has not been released and has no announced date.

Steam's public-branch record settled on Steam build 26395008 at 01:50 UTC on 3 November; the public game-file mirrors GameTracking-Dota2 and d2vpkr logged client 6970 at 01:51 and 02:00 UTC.

What build 6970 actually changed

No gameplay file changed. The game archive's file list did not change, so no hero script, item script, model, particle, sound or translation moved, and the d2vpkr mirror, which extracts the text, recorded one changed file: the version file.

GameTracking-Dota2's diff puts the rest in the client binaries and support files:

  • Windows client.dll grew by 1,024 bytes.
  • Linux libclient.so grew by 2,304 bytes.
  • macOS libclient.dylib changed at an unchanged byte size.
  • Two dota.signatures files and the tools asset index changed at unchanged sizes.

No server library changed. Builds 6965 to 6969 all rebuilt server.dll or libserver.so; 6970 leaves both alone. The mirrors cannot show what the rebuilt client code does, so treat it as a client-only build of unknown purpose, not on its own a sign of 7.42.

The longest build gap since 7.41 shipped

On d2vpkr's log, 6970 landed 148.7 hours after 6969, which arrived at 21:20 UTC on 27 October. That is the longest gap between consecutive client builds since 7.41, dated 24 March. The previous longest in that stretch was 144.3 hours, in May.

Three gaps since late December were longer: 175.0 hours from 29 December 2025 to 6 January, 166.7 hours from 27 February to 5 March, and 173.3 hours from 16 to 24 March, which closed on the date 7.41 carries. One long silence before a big patch is not a pattern, and this one ended with a client-only build rather than a patch.

224 days without a numbered patch, as of 3 November

7.41 is dated 24 March 2026 in Valve's patch-notes list. That list carries 118 entries, 34 numbered, beginning with 7.08 in February 2018. Measuring each numbered patch's date against the next one's, and 7.41's against 3 November, this wait ranks second:

  • 240.00 days: 7.32 to 7.33 (Aug 2022 to Apr 2023)
  • 224.00 days: 7.41, as of 3 November 2026
  • 207.04 days: 7.39 to 7.40 (May to Dec 2025)
  • 202.04 days: 7.37 to 7.38 (Jul 2024 to Feb 2025)

Only 7.32's 240.00-day gap is longer. Counting from the list's dates, if no numbered patch arrives first this wait draws level with 7.32's on 19 November and becomes the longest we measure after that. The ladder is ours, derived from Valve's list, which starts at 7.08: a measurement, not a record.

By Valve's dates, 7.41f is 49 days old on 3 November

7.41f arrived on 15 September 2026, with the item-cost and hero changes our breakdown of 7.41f covers. The six lettered revisions, 7.41a to 7.41f, each came 3, 11, 29, 29, 56 and 47 days after the release before it. At 49 days the current wait is longer than five of those gaps; only the 56-day gap between 7.41d and 7.41e is longer, and this wait reaches 56 days on 10 November.

As of 07:00 UTC on 3 November, Valve's newest Steam news post for Dota 2 remains "Inside the Trove of Terror", from 7 October. Our Trove of Terror explainer has the odds and the reported price. Valve's Steam news feed also has nothing on the player-count fall that began overnight on 27 to 28 October, covered in our Dota 2 player count report.

The 7.42 window in circulation does not trace to Valve

A CyberScore piece from 2 October expected a second Dark Carnival event act, possibly near Halloween, and put 7.42 in the window of DreamLeague Season 30, citing Valve's habit of timing major patches around ESL events; it called a combined Act 2 and 7.42 release unlikely. Halloween passed with no Dota 2 post on Valve's Steam news feed. As of 07:00 UTC on 3 November the DreamLeague window is an expectation, not a report. The event itself is scheduled: Liquipedia's infobox gives ESL Gaming, 24 teams, 2 to 13 December, $750,000. Nothing from Valve ties a patch to it.

Our post-TI15 calendar has the full event schedule.
