Quick Answer: Chemistry in FC 27 still works the same way at squad level — every starter can earn 0 to 3 chemistry by playing in position and linking up through Club, Nation and League, for a maximum of 33 across the XI. What changed in the 14 September Launch Update is the special-item side: ICONs now contribute +1 Nation instead of +2, Heroes now contribute +1 League instead of +2, and Hall of FUT items follow the Hero rules. The ICON's +1 League link to every League survives untouched. Net effect: your legends still sit on full chemistry themselves, but each one now needs roughly one extra real body in the squad to hit the same Nation or League threshold.
EA dropped the EA SPORTS FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes on 14 September 2026, and buried under the ICON ratings and Hall of FUT reveal was the change that quietly rewrites every squad template you were planning to copy: chemistry contributions from boosted items have been cut.
This matters right now, not in October. The Web App opens 16 September 2026 at 17:00 UTC, and the first thing most players do with a fresh club is drag their starter squad into shape. Build it on FC 26 chemistry maths and you will be staring at orange links wondering what you did wrong.
Here is exactly how chemistry works in FC 27, what EA changed, and what the change costs you in squad slots.

What is chemistry in FC 27, and what does it actually do?
Chemistry is Ultimate Team's squad-cohesion system. Each of your eleven starters can hold 0, 1, 2 or 3 chemistry points, giving a theoretical squad maximum of 33.
Chemistry points are a stat multiplier, not a stat source. A player on 3 chemistry receives the full boost from their applied Chemistry Style; a player on 0 chemistry plays at their base card stats. This is the part people still get wrong from the FIFA era: 0 chemistry is not a penalty. Negative attribute reductions were removed from Ultimate Team back in FUT 23, so an off-chem card is merely un-boosted, never sabotaged.
Chemistry Styles matter more than the raw number, which is why the boost model is worth repeating. In the FC 26 Launch Update, EA wrote:
"New Boost Model: Styles now use a 3/6/9-point boost system instead of 4/8/12, narrowing stat gaps and keeping balance tighter."
EA has not restated a different model for FC 27, so expect the 3/6/9 ladder to carry over: a Style delivers a third of its value at 1 chemistry, two thirds at 2, and the full amount at 3. Combined with PlayStyles+ being trimmed to a maximum of 3 per squad this year, the gap between a perfectly chemmed squad and a scrappy one is smaller than it was two titles ago — but it is still the cheapest upgrade in the game, because it costs zero coins.
Two more rules that never change:
- Substitutes and reserves do not receive chemistry boosts. Only the starting XI earns points.
- Chemistry is locked at kickoff. Subbing a player on mid-match does not recalculate anything.
How does a player earn 0, 1, 2 or 3 chemistry?
Two conditions stack.
Condition one: position. A player must be played in one of their listed positions to be eligible for chemistry at all. Out of position, they sit at 0 regardless of how many teammates share their league.
Condition two: links. Chemistry comes from counting how many players in your XI share the same Club, Nation or League. Each category has its own thresholds, and a player draws from all three.
| Shared attribute | +1 chemistry | +2 chemistry | +3 chemistry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club | 2 players | 4 players | 7 players |
| Nation | 2 players | 5 players | 8 players |
| League | 3 players | 5 players | 8 players |
Those thresholds are the FC 26 values documented by the community reference sites (FIFAUTeam's chemistry breakdown at `fifauteam.com/fc-26-chemistry/` is the most complete public write-up), and nothing in EA's FC 27 notes suggests they are moving. The player counts toward their own totals, and a single card caps at 3 no matter how many categories overshoot.
Three edge rules worth banking before day one:
- Women's and men's items link via Club and Nation only, never League.
- Your Manager contributes a flat +1 to starters who share their Nation or League, capped at one point per player. Easily forgotten, and worth roughly one extra link across a mixed squad.
- Dual-nationality and dual-position items count for every listed value, which is why versatile cards are disproportionately valuable as glue.
What exactly is changing for ICONs, Heroes and Hall of FUT in FC 27?
This is the new part. From the official FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes on ea.com:
"In FC 27, we're making a few targeted changes to Chemistry focused on ICONs, Heroes, and other boosted Chemistry Items. ICONs will continue to receive full Chemistry when played in position and provide a +1 League link to every League. Their Nation contribution is being reduced from +2 to +1. Heroes will also continue to receive full Chemistry when played in position, while their League contribution is being reduced from +2 to +1. Their +1 Nation contribution remains unchanged. Hall of FUT Items will follow the same Chemistry rules as Heroes. Throughout the year, we'll also be more selective about when Campaign Items and other Special Items receive boosted Chemistry."
Translated into a before-and-after:
| Item type | Own chemistry in position | Nation contribution | League contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| ICON (FC 26) | 3 | +2 | +1 to every League |
| ICON (FC 27) | 3 | +1 | +1 to every League |
| Hero (FC 26) | 3 | +1 | +2 to their League |
| Hero (FC 27) | 3 | +1 | +1 to their League |
| Hall of FUT (FC 27) | 3 | +1 | +1 to their League |
Read the table twice, because the headline everyone is repeating — "ICONs got nerfed" — is imprecise. The ICON's signature ability, the +1 League link to every single League in the game, is completely intact. That is still the most powerful single property any item has, and it is still what makes an ICON the anchor of a hybrid squad. What got cut is the Nation side.
Heroes took the harsher hit. A Hero's whole identity was being the double-strength League connector for the one league they belong to, with a Nation link as a bonus. Halving that League contribution removes the exact thing you paid a premium for. And because Hall of FUT items inherit the Hero ruleset, the entire new legend category launches on the nerfed value from day one.
How much does the ICON and Hero nerf really cost you?
Here is where the abstract "+2 to +1" becomes something you can count in squad slots. Because the thresholds count increments rather than cards, dropping a contribution by one means you need one more body to reach the same tier.
With an ICON, chasing a Nation link:
| Target | FC 26 | FC 27 |
|---|---|---|
| +2 Nation (5 needed) | ICON counts 2, so 3 other players | ICON counts 1, so 4 other players |
| +3 Nation (8 needed) | ICON counts 2, so 6 other players | ICON counts 1, so 7 other players |
With a Hero, chasing a League link:
| Target | FC 26 | FC 27 |
|---|---|---|
| +2 League (5 needed) | Hero counts 2, so 3 other players | Hero counts 1, so 4 other players |
| +3 League (8 needed) | Hero counts 2, so 6 other players | Hero counts 1, so 7 other players |
One extra slot per legend, per category. In an eleven-man squad that is a real constraint — stack two Heroes from different leagues and you have burned two slots' worth of flexibility compared to last year.
The practical consequence for launch week: build around the ICON's universal League link, not around Nation stacking. One ICON plus a spine of players from three or four different leagues still produces a near-full-chemistry hybrid, because every one of those leagues gets its +1. Forcing a Brazil or Argentina nation core off the back of an ICON is where you will now come up short.
For who is actually available on day one, our FC 27 ICONs guide covers the Debut pool, and the Hall of FUT breakdown explains how that category works.
Do ICONs and Heroes still get full chemistry themselves?
Yes — and this is the reassurance most players miss on a first read. EA's wording is explicit: both item types "continue to receive full Chemistry when played in position."
An ICON striker slotted at ST is on 3 chemistry the moment you place them, with zero links required. A Hero at CM is on 3 the same way. The nerf does not touch the legend card at all. It touches everyone standing next to them.
That distinction changes how you value these items on the market. An ICON is still a guaranteed full-chem, full-Style-boost card in any squad regardless of context, which is why they hold price. What you should re-price downward is the convenience premium you used to pay for a Hero as a league-bridging utility card.
What about Campaign and special-item chemistry boosts?
The last line of EA's paragraph is the one to watch all year: they will be "more selective about when Campaign Items and other Special Items receive boosted Chemistry."
There is a clear precedent. In FC 26, the Cornerstones campaign shipped items carrying enhanced +2 Club chemistry links, which made them useful as squad glue well beyond their rating. "More selective" signals an occasional, promo-specific perk rather than a default expectation.
The honest read for launch: assume a special item gives standard contributions unless EA says otherwise in that promo's notes. The Destined for Glory campaign runs 25 September to 9 October 2026 and EA has not stated whether those items carry boosted chemistry — so do not build a squad plan that depends on it. The same applies to Ones to Watch, which runs from 17 September through 22 October 2026.

How do you build a 33-chemistry squad in the FC 27 Web App?
The Web App opens 16 September 2026 at 17:00 UTC, with the Companion App refreshing 17 September at 17:00 UTC. Squad building is one of the few things you can genuinely do before the game unlocks, so a working method matters.
- Pick your league spine first. Fill five to eight slots from one league. That is the densest source of chemistry in the game and it survives every item-type change.
- Add the ICON second, not first. Place them in a listed position, then let their universal +1 League link cover whichever leagues you had to break into.
- Use Nation as the tiebreaker, not the plan. With ICON Nation support cut to +1, nation cores now need eight same-nation bodies for a +3 — treat nation links as a bonus you collect, not a structure you build on.
- Set the Manager deliberately. Match their Nation or League to your weakest-linked bloc for a free +1.
- Check positions before you check links. An out-of-position card is a guaranteed 0, and it is the most common cause of a squad reading lower than you expected.
- Apply Chemistry Styles last, once the XI is locked.
Our Web App launch checklist walks through the rest of the day-one sequence, and the starter team guide has a concrete first-squad template.
Why do my players have 0 chemistry?
Four causes, in order of how often they are the answer:
- The player is out of position. Nothing else matters until this is fixed.
- They are a substitute or reserve. Only the XI earns points.
- They have no qualifying links. A lone player from an isolated league and nation sits at 0 by design.
- A women's item is sharing only a league with men's items. That link does not exist; you need Club or Nation instead.
And if the squad screen and the match feel disagree, remember the kickoff lock.
What are players saying about the chemistry changes?
Community reaction on the main Ultimate Team subreddits has been sharply negative, and not in a generic way. Three themes dominate.
The loudest is a design complaint: a large share of posters argue chemistry has become so low-impact since the 3/6/9 boost cut that the system barely justifies its own existence, and that trimming it further solves nothing.
The most substantive objection is about Heroes. Heroes have no club link at all, which was precisely why the double League contribution existed as compensation. Removing it leaves them with less connective value than an ordinary card from a stacked league — the strongest argument in the thread.
The third is cynicism about monetisation: several posters read "more selective about when Campaign Items receive boosted Chemistry" as a plan to sell chemistry back through promos. That is speculation, not something EA has stated, but worth watching as the season calendar unfolds.
Building a full-chemistry squad is a coin problem before it is a knowledge problem. The spine players, the depth from one league, the ICON anchor — all of it is market cost, and the launch window is exactly when prices are worst.

- EA FC 27 Evolutions Boost — pathways cleared for you while you play
- All EA FC 27 services — the full launch-window lineup
A note on the obvious question: no coin service can promise zero risk, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something. What Comfort Trade does is avoid the transfer-market patterns EA flags hardest, deliver in paced tranches rather than one spike, and keep automation out of your account entirely. The residual risk is real but small, and it is yours to weigh.

FAQ
Does chemistry still matter in FC 27? Yes, but less than in the FIFA era. With the 3/6/9 Chemistry Style boost model and a maximum of 3 PlayStyles+ per squad, the gap between a 33-chemistry team and a 20-chemistry team is narrower than it once was. It is still free performance, so there is no reason to leave it on the table.
Do ICONs still give chemistry to every league in FC 27? Yes. The ICON's +1 League link to every League is explicitly unchanged in EA's Launch Update. Only their Nation contribution dropped, from +2 to +1.
Are Heroes worth buying in FC 27? They are still full-chemistry cards in position with strong PlayStyles, but their value as a league-bridging utility item has dropped meaningfully now that their League contribution is +1. Price them as players, not as chemistry tools.
Do Hall of FUT cards have special chemistry? They follow the same rules as Heroes: full chemistry in position, +1 to their Nation, +1 to their League. No enhanced links.
What is the maximum chemistry in FC 27? 33 — eleven starters at 3 points each. Substitutes and reserves do not contribute.
Does 0 chemistry make a player worse? No. A 0-chemistry player performs at their base card stats with no Chemistry Style boost applied. Negative attribute penalties have not existed in Ultimate Team since FUT 23.
Can I change chemistry after kickoff? No. Chemistry is calculated when the match starts, and substitutions during the game do not recalculate it.
