FC 27 Squad Foundations: Which League to Pick (You Can't Change It Later)

The EA FC 27 Ultimate Team Choose Your League screen showing all four league pairings — Premier League with Barclays Women's Super League, LALIGA EA SPORTS with Liga F Moeve, Bundesliga with Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 McDonald's with Arkema Première Ligue

The very first screen of FC 27 Ultimate Team asks you to pick a league, and most people are going to click straight through it. That is a mistake this year. In EA SPORTS FC 27 the league you choose on that screen is locked for the rest of the football season, and it decides four free untradeable players plus the contents of every Foundations pack and player pick you open in your first week.

This guide covers what Squad Foundations actually are, exactly what each of the four league choices gives you, which one is the best pick, and the two traps that are catching people on day one.

TL;DR — the quick answers

  • Current FC 27 phase: Web App window. The Web App opened 16 September at 17:00 UTC, the Companion App refresh lands 17 September at 17:00 UTC, early access begins 17 September at 23:00 UTC on PC and 18 September at 00:00 regional time on every other platform. Worldwide launch is 25 September (PC unlocks 24 September at 23:00 UTC).
  • There are four choices, not eight. The tiles are paired by country — England, Spain, Germany, France. The paired women's league never supplies one of your four objective players, but it does appear in the starter-pack pool.
  • It is permanent, and the game says so on the screen: "Once a league is selected, you'll be locked into a unique onboarding path that cannot be changed."
  • Best pick: LaLiga, with the Premier League a close second. LaLiga's four reward players are the strongest set and its packs are the most likely to contain someone you actually use.
  • There is no Serie A option. That is the single biggest complaint on the FC subreddits today, and there is no workaround.
  • The Premier League tile is pre-selected. Skip the screen without choosing and England is what you get by default.

What are Squad Foundations in FC 27?

Squad Foundations are FC 27's onboarding reward track: a set of untradeable Player Items handed out for completing the game's first objective groups and starter SBCs. They are not pack pulls. You cannot buy them on the Transfer Market and you cannot lose them by selling — they are the scaffolding EA gives every new club so you have a usable spine before you ever open a real pack.

EA confirmed the system by name in its FUT Launch Update Pitch Notes, published 14 September 2026, both as launch content and as a permanent collection category. On Gallery, EA writes: "More than 100 Sets will be available at launch, spanning major men's and women's leagues and clubs, alongside Rarity Sets such as Squad Foundations and Team of the Week." And in the Early Access section, EA lists exactly what is live before worldwide launch:

  • Team of the Week 1 & 2
  • Ones to Watch Themed Player SBCs
  • Challenge and Upgrade SBCs
  • Evolutions
  • Squad Foundations
  • Opportunities to Earn Season Points

So Foundations are not a Web App curiosity you can put off. They are one of six things EA has actually switched on for the early access week, and they feed straight into Season 1: Ones to Watch, which EA confirmed runs Thursday 17 September 2026 to Thursday 22 October 2026.

Why is the FC 27 league choice permanent?

Because EA built the whole onboarding path around it. Previous FC titles let you pick a starter nation pack and that was the end of it. This year the choice branches the objective rewards themselves.

EA is not hiding it either. The warning sits in the right-hand panel of the Choose Your League screen itself, in yellow: "Once a league is selected, you'll be locked into a unique onboarding path that cannot be changed." Two things change based on which tile you press:

  • Your four Foundations objective players. The objective groups are identical for everyone. The CB, LB, CM and ST you receive for finishing them are not — each league has its own, all untradeable.
  • Your Foundations packs and picks. The 3x Gold Players Pack, the 77+ Gold Player Pick and the 2x 80-83 Gold Players Pack that drop out of the Foundations groups are all filtered to your chosen league.

That second point matters more than the first, and it is the one people underweight. Four free cards are four free cards. A week of packs that can only roll players from a shallow league is a week of quick-sell fodder.

The four league pairings

ChoiceMen's leaguePaired women's league
EnglandPremier LeagueBarclays Women's Super League
SpainLALIGA EA SPORTSLiga F Moeve
GermanyBundesligaGoogle Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga
FranceLigue 1 McDonald'sArkema Première Ligue

Here is a nuance almost every guide is getting wrong. Your four Foundations objective players all come from the men's league — that part is settled. But the starter pack is not men's-only: select England and the in-game blurb reads "Start your Squad with more players from Premier League and Barclays Women's Super League." The paired women's league feeds the pack pool even though it never supplies an objective reward. So the women's league should not swing your decision, but do not assume it is pure decoration either.

And no, there is no Italian option — which stings because there used to be one. Dexerto's capture of the FC 26 version of this screen shows six pairings, including Serie A Enilive with Calcio A Femminile and Major League Soccer with the NWSL. FC 27 cut it to four. One player on r/EASportsFC made the obvious point that Serie A is still an EA-sponsored competition, so a licensing explanation does not hold up, and guessed further Foundations batches may land later in Season 1. That is community speculation, not an EA statement. As of the live build, the four tiles above are the entire menu.

Which league should you pick in FC 27?

LaLiga. It is the only one of the four where every reward player finishes in the top three at its position, it owns the best centre-back and the best left-back of the sixteen, and its pack pool is deep enough that Foundations packs keep producing usable cards well past week one.

The Premier League is the close second and the right call if you are committed to building an English squad — it has the strongest single card of the sixteen. Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are only correct if you already know that is the squad you want to build.

Here is the full comparison. The ratings below are FUT.GG's community meta ratings, not EA's OVR — EA does not publish a meta score, so read these as one site's model rather than official data.

Premier League. Lewis Miley is the standout of all sixteen at 82.3, more than a point clear of the next midfielder, with 81 passing, 80 dribbling and 80 defending — the only Foundations player most people will genuinely start. The league-select screen previews the English striker as an 82 OVR Kostoulas (85 pace, 79 shooting) with the line "Complete Foundations to earn Kostoulas on this path." The catch is that the Premier League also has the weakest card in the pool (Lindelöf, 60 pace) and the lowest average.

LaLiga. Suazo is the best full-back available — 81 pace, 82 physical, 77 defending is a real starter profile. Starfelt is the best defender by a full point on 82 defending and 83 physical. Moi Gómez has 83 passing and 82 dribbling but 65 pace holds him behind Miley. Nothing here is a throwaway.

Bundesliga. Never wins a position, never finishes last. Kofane is the pick — 85 pace, 81 shooting, 80 physical — and Koch has the best raw defending and physical numbers of the sixteen at 83 and 85. A solid, unexciting set, and several community posters have called it the best first-week option for exactly that reason.

Ligue 1. Sinayoko is the most complete forward on offer (81 pace, 83 shooting, 81 dribbling, 82 physical) and Ganiou is a strong second-best CB. It falls down at left-back, where Tagliafico's 71 pace puts him last.

How do you unlock each Squad Foundations player?

The objective groups are the same whichever tile you pressed. Only the player at the end changes.

Objective groupWhat it takesReported SPReward player
The Journey BeginsPlay any Live Events, Rivals or Squad Battles match — 4 objectives100 SPYour league's CB
First Team DreamsComplete the Getting Started group, the Bronze Upgrade group, and three SBC groups total400 SPYour league's LB
Rising Through the RanksFive club-maintenance objectives — Chalk Talk, For Club and Crest, Form Fitting, Style and Substance, Consumable Craze250 SPYour league's CM (expected)
Total FootballFinish the three groups above — 3 objectives300 SPYour league's ST

The Season Points figures above are FUT.GG's reading of the live build, not an EA-published table — treat them as indicative and confirm the exact values on your own objective screen.

All four groups live under the Foundations tab of the FUT Objectives menu, alongside Milestones, Mastery, Seasonal and FC Pro. The in-game description on Rising Through the Ranks is explicit about what you are earning: "All good clubs need polishing on and off the pitch. Complete these maintenance objectives to earn rewards. All rewards are untradeable." Its group reward card shows a 2x 80-83 Gold Players Pack (Untradeable) in your chosen league — for England, a 2x 80-83 Premier League pack.

Two caveats worth knowing before you start. The centre-back is the cheapest of the four — one match clears The Journey Begins. The striker is the most expensive, because Total Football requires every other group finished first.

And the midfielder is not confirmed. The CM is not printed on the Rising Through the Ranks group reward card in the live build — only the 2x pack is — so he is most likely attached to one of the five individual objectives inside the group, the same way the centre-back sits inside The Journey Begins rather than on its group card. That is an inference, not something EA has published. Verify it in-game before you plan a squad around it.

One related correction worth making, because it trips people up: unlocking the Transfer Market is not a Foundations reward. The Transfer Market Milestone — 25 Buy Now, 50 Buy Now, List 25, List 50, paying 2,500 FUT Coins — sits in the Milestones tab, a separate track from Foundations.

The Getting Started SBC trap

This is catching people right now. First Team Dreams asks you to complete the Getting Started Squad Building Challenge group — and several players on the Web App have reported they simply cannot find it.

The explanation circulating on r/EASportsFC is that Getting Started is one of the new Streamlined SBCs, and that Streamlined SBCs are not on the Web App. EA's Launch Update backs the platform split without naming the Web App specifically: "Streamlined SBCs will be available on console and PC at launch and are intended to release in the Companion App later in Season 1." So the console-and-PC-first part is EA's; the Web App part is a player report, and it matches what EA said about the Companion App.

Practical consequence: if you are on the Web App before early access, you can clear The Journey Begins objectives but you will likely stall on the left-back until you get into the game itself on 17–18 September. Plan around it rather than hunting for a menu that is not there. Our Streamlined SBCs explainer covers how the new submit-by-score format works.

Which Foundations players are worth an Evolution?

This is where the ranking flips, and it is the most useful thing to know before you spend an Evolution slot.

A card's current rating tells you how good it is. For an Evo, what matters is headroom — pace, and whether it is carrying PlayStyles it cannot use in its position. FUT.GG's analysis flags that six of the sixteen Foundations players have at least one PlayStyle that does nothing for their position: Miley, Moi Gómez, Kofane, Hugo Duro, Sinayoko and Kostoulas. Every striker is on that list. No defender is.

That matters more in FC 27 than it did last year, because EA cut the maximum number of PlayStyles+ per item from five to three as part of its steadier upgrade pacing. With only three slots, a wasted one is a much bigger tax.

So the best Evo targets are the slow, defensively solid centre-backs nobody wants to start:

PlayerPositionLeaguePaceDEF / PHYWhy
LindelöfCBPremier League6082 / 76Best candidate — only pace is missing
KochCBBundesliga6883 / 85Best defending and physical of all sixteen
TagliaficoLBLigue 17181 / 80Well-rounded, just slow
StarfeltCBLaLiga7482 / 83Already the best CB; pace makes him a keeper
GaniouCBLigue 17682 / 83Good now, better with pace

If you picked England and you are disappointed with Lindelöf, this is your consolation: pace is the stat Evolutions move most, and one pace Evo turns him into an 82-defending centre-back with clean PlayStyle slots, earned from a single match of effort.

How much is this actually worth in coins?

Foundations cards are untradeable, so their value is what they save you, not what they sell for. The realistic framing for launch week: four free starters plus three league packs means you do not have to buy a back four and a midfield pivot on a market that is at its most expensive of the entire year.

Everything else, though, you pay for — and FC 27 has rewritten the income side. EA's Launch Update confirms a significant increase to post-match payouts: "Compared to the roughly 500 to 600 FUT Coins typically earned from a match in EA SPORTS FC™ 26, Champions and Rivals will have the potential to reward several times more Coins, while Squad Battles will also see an increase." You also earn between 15 and 100 Season Points per eligible match, up to 850 Season Points per day — which is how the Ones to Watch Season Pass gets cleared.

At the top end, EA published the Division 1 Upgraded Rewards for Rivals: 95,000 coins, 4x 84+ Gold Players Pack, 5x 83+ Gold Players Pack, a 1 of 5 83+ Gold Players pick, a Giant Gold Pack and a TOTW Player Pack. All Rivals pack rewards are tradeable at launch.

That is the gap Foundations does not close. A free CB and a free LB are a starting point; a competitive launch-week squad is still a five- or six-figure coin problem, and the Transfer Market is at peak prices while everyone is buying at once. If you want to skip the grind, that is what we do:

Want the squad without the launch-week grind? timesaver.gg runs FC 27 services on real accounts with paced delivery — no cheats, no bots, no injectors. Note that EA's User Agreement prohibits buying, selling or transferring coins for real money, so there is always residual risk; we manage it, we do not pretend it is zero.

What should you do in the first hour?

If the Web App is your first contact with FC 27, the order that wastes the least time:

  • Read the league screen before you touch it. The Premier League is pre-selected. Do not confirm by reflex.
  • Pick LaLiga unless you have a specific reason to build English, German or French.
  • Clear The Journey Begins — one match of Live Events, Rivals or Squad Battles gets you the centre-back and 100 SP.
  • Expect to stall on First Team Dreams until you are in-game, because of the Streamlined SBC platform gap above.
  • Do not quick-sell your Foundations players to make room. They are untradeable and they are your Evo stock.
  • Start the Transfer Market Milestone separately — it lives in the Milestones tab, not Foundations, and our Transfer Market unlock guide explains the gates that apply on top.

For the wider first-session plan, the FC 27 Web App first-hour guide and the launch-week starter team guide cover what to do with the coins once Foundations has given you a spine.

FAQ

Can you change your league in FC 27? No. Once you confirm the tile on your first load into Ultimate Team, the onboarding path is locked for the rest of the year. There is no in-game reset and no support option to swap it.

Does the league you pick affect packs? Yes, and this is the most important part. The 3x Gold Players Pack, the 77+ Gold Player Pick and the 2x 80-83 Gold Players Pack from the Foundations groups all pull only from your chosen league.

Which league is selected by default in FC 27? The Premier League. If you click past the screen without making an active choice, England is what you get — so slow down on that menu.

Why is there no Serie A in the FC 27 league selection? EA has not explained it. Community speculation ranges from a rights issue to further Foundations batches arriving later in Season 1, but neither is confirmed. As of the Web App build there are four options: England, Spain, Germany and France.

Are Squad Foundations players tradeable? No. The in-game objective text is blunt about it — "All rewards are untradeable" — and that covers the packs too. Their value is in Evolutions and squad-building, not resale. EA has confirmed a broadly higher proportion of tradeable rewards elsewhere in FC 27, but the onboarding track is not part of that.

Does the paired women's league give you anything? Not an objective player — all four of those come from the men's league. It does appear in the starter-pack description, though: pick England and the screen promises "more players from Premier League and Barclays Women's Super League."

Do I need early access to get Squad Foundations? No, but it helps. EA lists Squad Foundations among the content live during early access from 18 September, and the Streamlined SBC requirement inside First Team Dreams is console and PC only at launch — so Web App-only players will finish the track more slowly.

The bottom line

The FC 27 league selection is the first genuinely irreversible decision of the year, and it is hiding behind a screen most players will treat as a splash page. Take LaLiga if you have no strong preference: the best centre-back, the best left-back, no weak link, and the deepest pack pool for the week that follows. Take the Premier League if you want Miley and an English squad. Then clear The Journey Begins immediately, save your slow centre-backs for Evolutions, and do not expect Foundations to build you a launch-week team on its own — it builds you a spine.

Dates, objective structures and Early Access content in this article are from EA's FC 27 Launch Update Pitch Notes (14 September 2026) at ea.com.
